1 year 30 would be a no brainer for the Jays. They would get the comp pick and the hype of the signing and the way the team would look next year would probably generate enough in sponsorship dollars and ad revenue to almost pay for the contract before the season started.
It isn't going to happen though.
Billy Beane put together with almost nothing to start with that made the playoffs. In 2017 the Jays will still have this year's MVP for 2 more years and a legit number 2, maybe a number 1 in Stroman at next to nothing for pay. Those two players alone should be enough for a talented, creative GM to work with, not to mention position playing players Devon Travis and Kevin Pillar also providing 3+ wins a year at next to no pay. You're not the most creative baseball mind if you can't find a way in which the Jays could succeed in 2017.
AA left this team with a season that generated 50 to 100 million more in revenues than the average of the last several years. It's no longer a theoretical model of what would happen to revenues if the team actually won. Next year revenues could be even higher. Corporate sponsorship and revenues negotiated for ads will be higher and if success is repeated the overall revenues will be higher with even higher attendance numbers. AA built a culture of a group of players who want to be here. We were able to sign Estrada for a reasonable contract because he loves it her. There are reports David Price's preferred team would be Toronto. That may be the first time in history that one of the top free agents has said, Toronto...that's really where I'd like to land. There are players like Estrada willing to give the home town discount because they love it here.
We have the reigning MVP who has 3 more years of Control. We have a legit number 2 maybe a number 1 in Stroman being paid league min. We're not in that bad of shape. We don't need sacrifice the future...all the pieces are here. We need to take all the money we made last year and invest it in a quality starter pitcher. It doesn't have to best, just one of the better arms out there. AA woke up a sleeping giant. Toronto is the 4th largest sports market in North America. The Jays are far more than just Toronto, they are Canada's team. We need to stop acting like we're cincinatti and play with the big dogs of baseball. We have a winning culture, the revenues are there and will continue to grow. Spend the money. I think that was AA's vision. People are completely missing the actual revenue generation from an actual playoff experience. Its importance in the future is completely down played by AA's detractors.
I'd prefer to sign one more guy. The trade on it's own is no big deal either way, but it would seem that the chance of Osuna getting a shot in the rotation is much less after this trade. There are legitimate concerns about his health transitioning to the rotation, but there's also a kid with fastball command who has a good change up and a good slider who could be a very good starter.
Clifff lee might be had on the cheap....how's that elbow...Who's a gambler....
it's not exactly something that's easy to check out. Pitchers with supposed amazing mechanics get injured, those with terrible mechanics sometimes never get injured. Sale has an even more pronounced inverted W than Osuna and he's done okay..lol. I'll take the 20 year old with great command and life to his pitches....we're not talking about signing a late 20s pitcher to a 100+ million dollar contract who has poor mechanics...we're talking the first 6 cheap years. I like Osuna's chances to be a quality productive starter until he is a free agent in 2021.
so you don't like that inverted W.....what do you think about his fastball command and his secondary pitches...looks like 3 pretty good pitches to me for a 20 year old
I shall shall sacrifice a virgin and pray daily to the living god Andrew Friedman with the hope you will enlighten me one day. Don't fret, there are plenty of other virgins around here for sacrifice, you're in no danger.
more importantly how do these players compare to harris, reid-foley, greene, borucki, hollon, maese.....Are all three of those pitchers definitively going to have better mlb careers than those names mentioned?
Boxy routinely comes out and questions peoples intelligence by utilizing a barrage of unflattering terms to question their intelligence. I'm not sure what drives a person to initiate such attacks. Maybe he feels are warm and fuzzy when he calls someone an idiot, but whatever compels him to make such statements, it is not an endearing quality.
His statement was that the Grandal deal was "far" better than the Donaldson deal. You can interpret those words how you wish. Far implies one can not be compared to the other. One may have been good, but then the other was drastically better. Any way you put it, the comment is asinine and shows Boxy's pre-disposition towards both gms. He is lacking objectivity which is main point. He discredits AA for his successes while highlighting all his mistakes. The opposite is true of his hero. i was purposely trying to do the same looking at things in hindsight with Friedman. My opinion is that the Donaldson trade was better than the Kemp deal and I'm not the only one on the board that would say this. I'm sure there are others who would agree with boxy that the kemp deal was a better one. It's a subjective matter.
You're saving for those special occasions, like the times you spend 18 dollars on a bottle of wine. Got it. The kemp trade was far superior to the donaldson trade. You have deemed it so, therefore it is. Thanks again yoda.
I'm typing and playing with my baby at the same time. Grandal won't produce as much WAR in 4 years as Donaldson did in 1 year. There happy. Call me when you're responsible for more than just going to high school.
I never said the trade was unimpressive. Grandal is a decent player. I think having one single player as valuable as donaldson provides insane value. To suggest that the kemp trade was far superior to the donaldson trade is outright hatred for one GM and infatuation for another. Donaldson got paid less than 5 million dollars this year and put up almost a 9 WAR...5 mil per WAR that's a shitload of money saved and Donaldson is going to look pretty f***ing good at 12 mil next year. Rollins was 36 this year and had injury issues with his legs last September.
you get testy when someone talks bad about your idol. You jerk off yet to your friedman poster today. Somehow you think I'm posting to prove Friedman is not a good baseball executive. I never said he was a bad executive. I simply pointed out the Rollins trade was terrible. The Dodgers paid 32 million dollars to get Grandal who is injury prone and won't as much WAR in 4 years as Donaldson did in 1 year. How is that deal far better than the Donaldson trade. LA has unlimited funds so clearling 15 mil a year salary isn't that impressive.
Shapiro was very well spoken today, I think he's going to do well here. I think AA will get an opportunity somewhere else and do well there. I think all the questions from the toronto media should be taken away and just given to Jamie Campbell. He conducts the best interviews by a mile.
