San Diego Padres 43-58 vs. Toronto Blue Jays 57-44 Pitching Matchup: SD: Perdomo (4-4, 6.93 ERA) vs. TOR: Dickey (7-11, 4.44 ERA) Melvin Upton Jr. began a three-game series with the Padres, and he'll finish it with the Blue Jays. Toronto acquired the veteran outfielder from San Diego on Tuesday morning for Class A pitching prospect Hansel Rodriguez. Upton made his Blue Jays debut as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night, but he's expected to be in the starting lineup for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. Upton was in Toronto with his Padres teammates when the deal was announced, but the transition was more complicated than just walking to the other side of the field. Upton had to make the hour-plus drive to Queenston, Ontario, which borders Lewiston, N.Y., to regain entry into Canada under a different work visa. "It's a little different," Upton admitted Tuesday evening. "It's really not something you'd expect to happen, but I think changing clubhouses, being on the other side, playing the team you were just on, it's, I don't know. I don't really know how I feel about it, but I'm definitely excited to be here. Good group of guys in a pennant race, and we have a chance to win." Upton is expected to get the start in the outfield when Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey takes the mound against San Diego's Luis Perdomo. Toronto's start originally belonged to right-hander Marco Estrada, but he'll now pitch Friday against the Orioles instead. That will give Estrada an extra couple of days' rest and have him match up against division-rival Baltimore. The 31-year-old Upton was an everyday player for the Padres, but his role is expected to be a little different in Toronto. He'll predominantly start against lefties but will also receive some occasional playing time in the outfield when Jose Bautista, Michael Saunders or Kevin Pillar needs a day off. "I've thought about it, but man, it's part of the game," Upton said when asked about facing his former team. "You rarely see it happen in the same series, but I think, as professionals, we know that anything is a possibility. Luckily, it's only for two games and we don't have to play them again." Padres Lineup: CF T. Jankowski RF W. Myers DH M. Kemp LF A. Dickerson 2B R. Schimpf C C. Bethancourt SS A. Ramírez 1B B. Wallace 3B A. Rosales Blue Jays Lineup: DH Jose Bautista ® 3B Josh Donaldson ® 1B E. Encarnacion ® LF M. Upton Jr. ® CF Kevin Pillar ® 2B Devon Travis ® RF E. Carrera (L) SS Darwin Barney ® C Josh Thole (L) Game Notes: • The Padres have homered in 24 consecutive games, a franchise record and the most in the Major Leagues this season. The Rangers hold the all-time record with 27 straight in August and September of 2002. • Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, who opened the scoring with a two-run homer on Tuesday, has reached base in 50 of his past 52 games. • Perdomo has baffled hitters with his sinker of late, and his 62 percent ground-ball rate is the highest in the Majors over the past 30 days.

Jays acquire Joaquin Benoit from Mariners for Drew Storen + Cash

Always liked Benoit. Despite his struggles, he has a proven track record of being an elite late inning reliever. Hopefully he can turn it around here like Grilli has. -
Blue Jays are heavily in on Andrew Cashner
jaysblue replied to King's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
Why? Deadline is still a couple of days away, so why not showcase him one last time? Especially if he can put together a strong start vs. one of the best lineups in baseball, even better. Unless a team was close to acquiring him and they told the Padres to not start Cashner because they knew a deal was imminent, I don't see the harm in the Padres starting him. -
San Diego Padres 43-57 vs. Toronto Blue Jays 56-44 Pitching Matchup: SD: Cashner (4-7 , 4.79 ERA) vs. TOR: Stroman (8-4 , 4.90 ERA) Andrew Cashner's name has been recently mentioned in trade rumors regarding the Blue Jays, but he'll look to go out and beat them on Tuesday evening at Rogers Centre. Cashner will match up against fellow right-hander Marcus Stroman in the second game of San Diego's three-game series in Toronto. The 29-year-old Cashner is a free agent at the end of the season, and he is reportedly on the Blue Jays' radar as either a depth piece at the back of the rotation or as a hard-throwing bullpen arm. Despite an inconsistent season to date, Cashner is coming off back-to-back strong starts over which he's allowed two earned runs in 11 2/3 innings while striking out 17. "What good is worrying about it going to do?" Cashner said after tossing 5 2/3 innings against the Cardinals his last time out. "I know I'm going to be traded. It's just part of the game, part of where the season's at." Stroman will look to replicate his recent performance. The 25-year-old Duke product held the D-backs to one run on eight hits over eight innings his last time out. While Stroman has had his fair share of struggles this season, a couple of slight mechanical changes have helped his performance of late. Stroman has allowed two runs or fewer in three of his past four starts. "I feel great, I feel great," Stroman said after his last outing. "I would never lie to you. I feel great, and it's just a matter of locking in, commanding and competing out there every five [days]." Padres Lineup: CF T. Jankowski 1B W. Myers RF M. Kemp 3B Y. Solarte LF A. Dickerson 2B R. Schimpf SS A. Ramírez DH B. Wallace C D. Norris Blue Jays Lineup: RF Jose Bautista ® 3B Josh Donaldson ® DH E. Encarnacion ® LF M. Saunders (L) SS Troy Tulowitzki ® C Russell Martin ® CF Kevin Pillar ® 1B Justin Smoak (S) 2B Devon Travis ® Game Notes: • San Diego and Toronto have reportedly already made one deal, as MLB Network contributor Ken Rosenthal broke early Tuesday morning that outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. will be joining the Blue Jays. Despite being healthy, Upton Jr. received consecutive days off on Sunday and Monday. Upton Jr. does have prior experience in the American League East, having spent the first eight years of his Major League career with the Rays. • After missing 30 games due to turf toe on his left big toe, Jose Bautista returned to the Blue Jays' lineup on Monday and finished 1-for-3 with a walk. The 35-year-old was placed in his regular spot atop the batting order and played right field, but he is expected to see time at DH as well. • The Padres extended their franchise-best streak of hitting a home run to 23 games on Monday thanks to a two-run home run by Alex Dickerson in the ninth inning. San Diego became the first National League team since the 2006 Braves to hit a home run in 23 straight games. http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/You-Stay-Classy-San-Diego-Anchorman.gif

The FA market for hitters this offseason is pretty weak. -

$16.4M in 2017 If Padres eat some of his salary for next year, then having Upton here on a one year contract at a reasonable rate isn't that bad considering the FA market for outfielders is weak. -

San Diego 43-56 4th NL West vs. Toronto 55-44 3rd AL East Pitching Matchup: Colin Rea (5-4, 5.01 ERA) vs. Aaron Sanchez (10-1, 2.87 ERA) It took 20 seasons of Interleague play, but with the Padres making their first trip to Toronto to begin a three-game series on Monday at Rogers Centre, every existing franchise will have visited every Major League city at least once. The Padres send Colin Rea (5-4, 5.01 ERA) to the mound for the series opener, with the right-hander looking to rebound after allowing eight hits and four runs in six innings in a 4-2 loss in St. Louis July 20. The Blue Jays counter with Aaron Sanchez (10-1, 2.87 ERA), who leads the American League with 15 quality starts in 19 outings. Sanchez has thrown 125 1/3 innings this season and is nearing his professional high of 133 1/3 thrown across three levels in 2014. An innings limit on Sanchez, 24, may be the only way to slow down the right-hander, who hasn't lost since April 22 and enters his start Monday having won his last nine decisions. In his only start since the All-Star break, Sanchez threw seven innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts and no walks in a 5-1 win in Arizona July 19. Padres Lineup: CF T. Jankowski 1B W. Myers RF M. Kemp 3B Y. Solarte LF A. Dickerson 2B R. Schimpf SS A. Ramírez DH B. Wallace C D. Norris Blue Jays Lineup: RF Jose Bautista ® 3B Josh Donaldson ® DH E. Encarnacion ® LF M. Saunders (L) SS Troy Tulowitzki ® C Russell Martin ® CF Kevin Pillar ® 1B Justin Smoak (S) 2B Devon Travis ® Game Notes: • Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista is expected to return to the lineup after missing 30 games with a hyper-extended toe sustained June 16 in Philadelphia. Bautista, who appeared in three games with Triple-A Buffalo over the weekend, is hitting .283/.342/.501 with 12 home runs in 65 games this season. • Padres second baseman and former Blue Jays prospect Ryan Schimpf set a San Diego rookie record with his ninth home run in a month on Sunday. The 28-year-old leads all qualified players with nine homers, .852 SLG and 1.249 OPS in July. Schimpf was Toronto's fifth-round Draft pick in 2009, and spent seven seasons in the Blue Jays' organization. • The Padres have homered in a franchise-best 22 straight games, tied with the Boston Red Sox for the longest streak this season. San Diego's streak is the longest in the National League since the Atlanta Braves homered in 23 straight in 2006. http://img.thesun.co.uk/aidemitlum/archive/01863/You-Stay-Classy-Sa_1863195a.gif

Seattle Mariners 50-47 vs. Toronto Blue Jays 54-44 SEA: Miley (6-7 , 5.36 ERA) vs. TOR: Happ (12-3 , 3.43 ERA) 1:07 PM ET Line: TOR -174 Lineups: Blue Jays: 1) 3B Darwin Barney 2) DH Josh Donaldson 3) 1B Edwin Encarnacion 4) LF Michael Saunders 5) SS Troy Tulowitzki 6) CF Kevin Pillar 7) RF Ezequiel Carrera 8) 2B Devon Travis 9) C Josh Thole Mariners: 1) LF Nori Aoki 2) DH Chris Iannetta 3) 2B Robinson Cano 4) RF Nelson Cruz 5) 1B Dae-Ho-Lee 6) 3B Kyle Seager 7) C Mike Zunino 8) CF Leonys Martin 9) SS Luis Sardiñas Notes (courtesy ESPN): J.A. Happ will be going for his career-best 13th win of the season on Sunday. Happ had a six-start winning streak stopped last Sunday when he did not factor in the decision in Toronto's 5-3 victory at Oakland. He allowed five hits, one walk and five runs in 5? innings. In his last seven starts, he is 6-0 with a 3.19 ERA. Happ was 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA in 21 games, including 20 starts, with Seattle last season. After being traded to the Pirates, he was 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 11 starts. In three career starts against Seattle, he is 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA. Miley (6-7, 5.38 ERA) will make his 18th start of the season and his fifth start since being reinstated from the disabled list (left shoulder impingement). He is 0-5 with a 5.60 ERA in his last five starts dating to June 12. On Tuesday he allowed six hits and three runs in 6? innings in a loss to the Chicago White Sox. That was good enough to earn him another chance on Sunday. In four career starts against Toronto, he is 1-2 with a 6.98 ERA. In his last two starts against the Blue Jays he is 1-0 with a 4.63 ERA. Drew Storen gone, Ryan Tepera called up.

Osuna a starter?
-
Just designate Storen for assignment already
jaysblue replied to TheGrandslamMan's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
Yeah like BTS said, the arm you likely replace him with from Buffalo isn't going to much of an upgrade, if any at all. It's unfortunate that Storen hasn't panned out here because the Jays could really use him right now. Not sure what the exact stats are, though it seems like when Storen hasn't pitched in the closers role (even when with the Nats), he was pretty awful. Even when they went out and got Papelbon last season and pushed Storen down to the 8th inning, he just imploded. -
You can probably just purchase them on StubHub close to game time the day of and print them off at the UPS Store on Front St. Cheapest pair in the 500 level is $20.96 USD each on StubHub right now in Sec 529, Row 10, if you're inclined to purchase them in advance.
