I'm hoping for an Espinal option. I'll assume Lukes is getting DFAd. It's a bit of a shame guys like Lukes and Clement haven't had any opportunity when they're called up. Lukes has a 10.9 walk rate and 7.6 k rate with a 139 wRC+ in AAA and clement 141 wRC+ 10.2bb and 3.5k-rate.
Yet we have zero issues running Espinal and Biggio out for 350 below replacement at bats.
I don't think anyone needs to be concerned about what they're eating on game days, IIRC even the minor league players are getting prepared meals for them at the ballpark. The bigger issue for a lot of the guys is likely off-season diet. You can eat rice, broccoli and chicken and still get fat if you're not getting satiated and overeating. When I did strongman/highland games a general meal for me was 6oz of chicken or beef, 300g of broccoli and 3-4 cups of rice to feel satiated, a cup of rice is roughly 200 calories and that's if you're just loosely filling it and not packing it in tightly to try and eat more food. I made the change to potatoes after seeing Fouad Abiad mention he did it to stay full longer and it was a game changer. I'd assume most of these guys eat more calories than the general population and get hungry more frequently.
This should be potatoes. They're better for you than rice. More vitamins, more fibre, lower calories per 100g, more protein, less fat, less carbs, more minerals. Obviously this is for a baked or boiled potato and not loaded with butter and such.
In regards to Vlad there was an article in May I think from Davidi that mentioned they brought in other coaches and special assistants like Edwin, Wilton Guerrero, V-Mart to try and talk to Guerrero and he kept doing his own thing. Guillermo Martinez came across as super frustrated with Vlad.
It’s as the point where I’m hoping he’s good enough to get a qualifying offer or a trade for assets because I don’t think it’s ever going to click again. I also think his left wrist issue from 2022 is a life long issue (I think this was also in a Davidi article) that he just has to work with as they can’t fix it.
DeJong is something like 96th percentile OAA this season and he handles LHP to the tune of a 129 wRC+ (.266/.368/.453). Career wise he's generally stronger against RHP. This is a nice improvement on Espinal who's really fallen backwards defensively.
I'd like to see one more bat come in as well.
He's basically a slider to fastball guy and the fastball is like 90-92. I don't know if the velocity and pitch mix is going to play in the big leagues.
Kirk has been a below league average bat for over a year (93 wRC+ in his last 550ish PA) with zero power. He's a good framer but has a s*** arm, can't run and if he's not a 115+ wRC+ bat I hesitate to give him more playing time. If the FO can move him for decent value I'd rather sign an older catcher to back up Jano.
Varsho is under performing this season but his xwOBA is basically the same it was in 2022. He's still going to project as a below average bat with elite D and great base running in CF. I'd be fine with that everyday in 2024 but he shouldn't be starting in LF.
Espi is also at 16th percentile by Statcast defensively this year. -3 OAA at 2B and -1 at SS. Biggio falls into the same percentile at -4 OAA at 2B and +1 at 1B.
I think both players should be upgraded on and if that's internal options like Davis Schneider or Ernie Clement or Otto Lopez or by trade.
Last night shows we need another bat for the bench. Kirk has a 90 wRC since June of 2022 and Espinal 93 since the start of 2022 and I don’t think his defence is as good as it was last season. I
I was out to breakfast with a few friends today and they were mad Kirk wasn't getting more playing time because he was an all star last year (same argument they made for Espinal). I decided to check out his stats in his last 550PA and they're not pretty - actually a lot worse than I was expecting.
91 wRC+, 22 extra base hits, .297 wOBA, 0.078 ISO.

I'm genuinely amazed with how poorly he's been hitting the last seasons worth of at bats.
I couldn't find the article but did find the data on /r/baseball which is pulling from Jay Cuda on Twitter.
I was mis-remembering a little but the link below will take you to the data.

I’m trying to find the article but it was from 2015-2022 for teams that have produced the most MLB talent in the draft and I think the Jays were around 7th with 13% of their drafted players making the big leagues. Top team was around 16% and bottom 7% which I think was the Braves.
I think what we saw from Vladdy in the later half of 21 and all of 22 is what he is and that's fine.
I think BNS said something like if they needed Manoah for a slot it would line up after a few simulated or MiLB games for around Canada Day. I don't think we'll see him then though.
Davidi has tweeted out that Horwitz is meeting the team in Arlington apparently. I don't know how to embed but I'm always surprised by buddy Graham who doesn't use any social media knows this s***.
I had thought that as well but as far as I can recall even when he was having wrist issues in July-October of last year he still hit the ball really hard.
I'm wondering if Vladdy is nursing a wrist injury. I know he had wrist issues in 2022 and then missed time around May 6th-8th with another one and since then he's been horrendous, 86 wRC+ with a .101 ISO. Prior to that he had a 157 wRC+ and a .212 ISO. His BABIP is close enough, BB (IIRC) is the same but his K-Rate has spiked by 8% and his power has completely disappeared.
I thought it was confirmed generally when our buddy texts us like 30 minutes later it’s on Twitter but I heard this is at 530ish and can’t find s***. He was right on Clement this year, Moreno and Lawrence off the top of my head last season.
I wonder if Espinal is 100% or if Vladdy is it feels like he’s been at DH a lot recently and was still having that nagging wrist issue from last year.
I’ve heard rumblings from a friend who’s had a few successful call ups among Jays over the last few years that he was called up for tomorrows game. We will have to see tomorrow though. I can’t find anything to actually confirm it.
Thanks mods for trying and keeping this clean. I’ve been pretty steamed the past few days as someone who is a member of the LGBTQ community and have been too frustrated to post. I did come back today and was happy to see that generally the discussions were civil and that anything egregious was dealt with. Just wanted to say thanks.
