  1. Comparing players over 1 season is a fools errand. Career - wButler's platoon splits are nothing to worry about, Lind is a pure platoon bat, but admittedly better against RHP. Butler strikes out less, and walks more, has similar but slightly less power, they're a wash defensively since both are pretty bad, but since both would be DH the vast majority of the time, that's really not a concern. Overall Butler is far more consistant, and the contracts are similar. Plus since you could DH Butler every day and stick at 1b to give Edwin a day off or two, you wouldn't have to worry about finding a lefty killer platoon bat which would allow for additional flexibility on the bench. If you can find Lind a legit lefty masher with real defensive usefullness, then yeah that's fine. But if you just compare 1 player to the other Butler is the better option all day, every day
  2. I don't think so at all. They simply aren't getting these kids to the point where they can be quality everyday big leaguers on a consistant basis. I don't expect multiple guys every year, but if you're not graduating at least 1 average major league player very year in addition to 1 or 2 part time position players or relievers that can fill in adequately for injuries without being a sinkhole, you aren't succeeding as an organization in player development.
  3. He'd be a much better option than Lind. If AA could trade for butler and ditch Lind, the Jays would be much better off.
  4. True, but I'd rather they develop one or two that didn't flop
  5. Well of course that's where I got the reference. My iPod is full of country.
  6. I would be in favour of re-signing Rasmus, provided A) he puts together a strong first half and shows improvement in his K rate, it's only for 4-5 years max on a team friendly rate, and C) there's nobody showing they could be a better CF option and Rasmus shifs to LF if they do.
  7. Nobody south of the Mason-Dixon Line does the Dougie. So sayeth Blake Shelton
  8. Prospect development still leaves a lot to be desired
  9. They already have, Ellsbury and McCann were both qualified FAs. GRanderson was too but the mets first round pick was protected so the mets would lose this second round pick, and the Yankees would gain a 1st round comp pick. So far though, since the Yankees have signed 2 qualifying FAs, the would lose their first rounder and their first round comp pick, while keeping their second rounder, unless of course they sign another qualified FA, in which case they'd lose that too.
  10. AAV is fine, length is silly for the Mariners. I don't blame Cano at all, all it takes is one GM to feel like they need to overpay and ... This is the result
  11. Yup, or if they get awarded a comp pick for one of their qualified FAs signing elsewhere they'd lose it instead of second round. At least that's my understanding.
  12. Oh snap! Yonge/bloor challenge coming up!
  13. Good read from Rosenthal on this whole Cano thing.
  14. Oh good, now we've turned this thread into a tribute to spanky
  15. I don't either, but a lot more teams should be using them as tools. It might help them not get bent over by Friedman on a regular basis
  16. I don't disagree with the valuations, and the fact that this type of thinking is actually starting to slowly slip into the MLB psyche is great. I just know there's now ay in hell that Tampa would trade Price for Polanco and be satisfied with the return because his projected surplus value is higher. They'll probably get an even better return than they did for Shields, even though that was an overpay
  17. I was at the game in San Fran when Freddy Sanchez broke his arm. Love that stadium
  18. I get this argument, but what isn't mentioned here is that there's still a lot more uncertainty as to whether a Polanco-type prospect will actually live up to the projections, whereas there far less uncertainty about Price living up to his. That's why teams will usually get far more return than these types of valuations.
  19. Oh don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the guy leave New York. One ellsbury injury, Jeter pulled groin and texeira DL stint and they be running a very interesting lineup.
  20. No chance he gets recognition as a Yankee legend if he plays half his career for another team. You gotta remember this is a franchise where even just being above average, like pettitte's, gets you hall of fame talk, when pettitte's numbers are comparable to mark Buerhle for his career. The help, prestige and legacy of career Yankees is massive. i don't think anyone actually remembers that Pettitte pitched for the Astros for 3 years, and admitted to using PEDs
  21. I don't think he cares about loyalty, I think he cares about being a Yankee legend, like Jeter. He can't be that if he signs in Seattle
  22. I wonder maybe Cano is telling them he'll sign if they show they're serious about winnng, in essence telling them that if they land Price via trade... I also for got to take into consideration that Seattle's new 2 billion dollar tv deal that starts in 2014. I still think 10 years is too long, but... I guess they'll have the money to spend
  23. 5:15pm: Cano asked the Mariners for a ten-year, $240MM deal, but the Mariners' offer did not exceed $200MM, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweets. Maybe Jack Z not as fully retarded as previously reported. Still... pretty retarded, but not full retard.
