    This is a key game, going into the most winnable series we've had in decades. Play our best, empty the bullpen, and get this one.

    If you believe Atkins, they didn't really want a bat. He said that we were able to complete in every level of the market and that we were able to accomplish our goals. We paid more for Varland than the Yankees paid for Bednar or Doval and I kind of get it, given the control, but I would have preferred a more elite reliever on a shorter term. Bieber and Dominguez are the type of moves that people wanted and expected. We'll have to reserve judgment until Bieber actually starts. I think people rendering a verdict on that deal already are a little foolish.

    We now know that Max still has it. If he's healthy then he's an easy choice for a playoff start.

    Unless I missed some news, it doesn't sound like Garcia will be back anytime soon. They sounded pretty pessimistic.

    Off the top of my head, I wouldn't take issue with any ranking between 2 and 5 for them.

    I would expect Gausman to be the starter today on regular rest.

    I have heard that as well. Advanced stats had him as average for a while, absolutely horrendous last year, and then the best he's ever been this season. I don't know what to expect.

    Sure, but Nola has been out most of the year as well. He's expected back soon. Even with the injuries: Wheeler > Gilbert Sanchez > Woo Suarez > Kirby Luzardo = Castillo Walker and Miller both suck. None of those comps are particularly arguable in my view. I think it's the Phillies as the clear best rotation and then we can discuss teams like the Reds, Rangers, Mariners, etc.

    He doesn't walk, he doesn't hit for power, he doesn't hit lefties or righties well, he doesn't play good defense, he's slow, he's not versatile. I have difficulty seeing what role he fills or how he can help us. If he knocks Davis Schneider off of the roster then I think we're a worse team.

    With all due respect, it's gotta be the Phillies. I get that their top 5 is better than this, but the Mariners are 14th in starter WAR.

    I'll just include Kirk, Varsho, and Gimenez because it seems like they will be back soon. Lineup: Kirk, Guerrero, Gimenez, Barger, Bichette, Clement, Varso, Lukes, Springer Bench: Heineman, France, Loperfido/Schneider, Straw. A decision needs to be made in a backup outfielder. I'd expect Schneider goes down in this scenario since they added France. Rotation: Gausman, Scherzer, Bassitt, Berrios, Lauer Bullpen: Hoffman, Varland, Little, Rodriguez, Dominguez, Fisher, Fluharty, (long man).

    Given the low prices, if we don't add a reliever, one has to assume that we didn't even want one. Solid guys are going for #10-20 ranked guys in bad systems.
