  1. Over 10 WAR in 3 seasons was pretty solid for Burnett. I'd be happy if we signed Wheeler and got a similar result.
  2. I don't think I can stomach another Eric Thames level defender in LF.
  3. I'm in on Wheeler for 5 years and 100 million, maybe a bit more on the dollars. I think that 6 years is too much for us, however.
  4. I said a month ago that they would tender Drury and got crucified for it. I love his defense and versatility, but they see more potential in the bat than I do.
  5. I'm not advocating for an overpayment so you can quit bringing that up in every post. If you're struggling for content then try actually responding to my points. It can't be overstated how bad our starting rotation is right now. The need to address the situation does not stem from impatience. It's simply the reality of the situation. We have, at best, two competent starters (Anderson+Thornton) and a huge need for 3 more. Pineda can fill one of those spots but you also need to add a better pitcher or two. That can be done via trade, but given our payroll situation, the better option is almost certainly free agency. If the prices are too high then so be it, but if you can get a Keuchel for 3/39 (like MLBTR suggests) then I think that does a lot of good for the development of our young players. Even at 5/100 for Wheeler, I don't think that really precludes the team from resigning their stars. None of them will have even reached free agency at that point.
  6. There's little doubt that they would have tendered him a contract had the injury not occured., but they probably made the right decision now.
  7. Every post you bring up the playoffs 2020 angle to make your points seem less foolish. Nobody expects a playoff berth, but progress has to be made towards that goal. Getting a solid rotation and having even a .500 season would do a whole lot of good for this team. We'd see more progression as a whole from our young players. In turn, they would also be more amenable to extensions. It would also make Toronto a more attractive place for free agents in coming seasons. Every prime FA want to sign with a team on the cusp of the playoffs with a bunch of prime young talent.
  8. Consistently trotting out guys who aren't major league calibre pitchers with ERA's north of five is going to be hard on any player. Players like Bichette are motivated by winning and will not want to remain here if we don't invest in being a winner. The clock is ticking on their service time and it's essential that we get the ball rolling towards being successful. That must begin now.
  9. I didn't make any predictions about our record, but we need to show our young players that we are serious about getting better if we want them to be motivated to play well and stay with the Blue Jays. Continuing to wallow in a losing culture will only harm their development. Wheeler is one of many players we could target. Make the best offer possible and see what happens. There's no reason to believe that he doesn't consider the Blue Jays an attractive destination.
  10. Wheeler has put up back to back 4 WAR seasons and his velocity is trending up. If 20 million is the price then you pay it. Continuing to have losing seasons with our young core will do nothing to help us. It will both hurt their development and sour them on the idea of resigning here.
  11. I like the names you mentioned, but would certainly try to get one of the top guys like Ryu or Wheeler. We have the salary space and I strongly believe that we need to spend it on pitching to get something like this: Wheeler Pineda Anderson Thornton Shoemaker (or any of the guys you brought up) That probably costs you 30 million per season and leaves space to address some position player holes without going too crazy. That rotation sets up a probable winning season and sets a good foundation for our young players. I don't think we have to go after Cole or anything, but another year of journeymen and reclamation projects will be counterproductive to our goals. We need to add free agents with upside that can be part of a Championship team.
  12. Can we wait until some of the elite pitchers are actually off the board before criticizing the FO? There's plenty of reason to believe they didn't even think Gibson was an upgrade. I'm sure they know the price tag for all of these guys and have a plan.
  13. I would as well. I'd be very excited to add Pineda.
  14. If you are confident that Kansas City and Detroit will not claim him then it's probably a good plan. There's a good chance that we never wanted him to begin with, however.
  15. It's plausible that we've waited on Villar with the intention of claiming him for nothing. They're going to play somewhere and I don't see why the delay would make us a less likely landing spot.
  16. Dylan Bundy and his projected 5.7 mil salary is up for trade. I think he offers as much as a guy like Gibson in the rotation, but I'm also intrigued by the idea of his excellent slider in the bullpen with a velocity bump for the fastball.
  17. A's put Jurickson Profar on the block and may non-tender him at 5.8 million. I'd take him off their hands in a second. The bat was actually pretty good last year considering his .218 BABIP. He's also versatile and at age 26 could still factor into our future.
  18. McGuire has shown an impressive ability to avoid strikeouts and he walks at a passable rate. That's been pretty consistent throughout his career. This power surge really came out of nowhere. If he figured something out then he's a good starting catcher. If it was just a fluke, he's probably more of a good backup.
  19. Good for him. Vernon Wells is a fantastic guy, it's nice to see him still involved in the game.
  20. Kenta Maeda not happy in Los Angeles I'm not sure what to make of his trade value. He's got a ridiculously cheap and long term deal, but is also up there in age.
  21. I just noticed that Kevin Pillar got an MVP vote. That's hilarious.
  22. With the Cubs probably looking to stay under the luxury tax, I'd be looking at players like Quintana and perhaps Schwarber as solid trade targets that could be had for good value.
  23. Being the left handed side of a potential platoon may explain why they have McGuire playing more.
  24. I think that the good pitching depth makes it smart to take gambles on riskier pitchers like Ryu and Pineda that can make a short term impact without harming our long term flexibility.
  25. The Jays recent playoff runs were bigger news than the Raptors in the majority of Canada from what I saw. I'm certain that a Jays title would be a much bigger deal as far as the nation is concerned. Parades are a local thing however, so I really can't say.
