  1. I just want to see some baseball. Every single person in this negotiation has more money than they know what to do with. Find a middle ground and settle it like grown men instead of babies. Everything will be back to normal next season and everyone will get their money.
  2. The Jays went 541-575 under Gord Ash. I'm not saying he did a good job, but you don't have to look far to find a Toronto GM that did worse than a ~.500 record.
  3. The craziest thing I remember about the Tatis slams is that they were both off of the same pitcher. He's lucky he didn't get drop kicked.
  4. I wasn't really intending to spark a debate on the subject. In a nutshell, all I meant to say was that the behaviour you mentioned evolved before society existed and was probably a positive thing when it did evolve.
  5. The live ball records of 363 innings and 33 complete games by Pete Alexander seems equally unattainable.
  6. Keep in mind that anything we could call society has only existed for something like 5000 years. I was referring to the time before that for the most part. A lot of human behaviours that seem strange now are rooted in our hunter gatherer origins and probably helped us then. I think that's even the case for some things we call mental illness, which is why they have no pathology.
  7. I see the hitting streak being broken before someone throws 680 innings or 75 complete games in a season, but it's still very impressive nonetheless.
  8. What would your picks be?
  9. That attitude has served us well through ~200,000 years of existence. It's only in modern integrated society that it has become an issue. I find that it's something even people in the sciences have to be aware of in their own work. Nobody is naturally free of bias.
  10. Depending on the circumstances, a hypothetical expansion GM would love to get a recent top 100 prospect with options. He was the last cut on my list.
  11. I agree that young pitching would be the target. I think a selecting team would love a shot at a guy like Borucki or Zeuch. MLBTR has done a couple so far and some teams like the Yankees have way too much to protect, while others like the red sox don't even have enough useful players to fill their slots. We're somewhere in the middle. What is your rationale for protecting a free agent signing like Shaw? I like him as a player, but he has as much value as a waiver pickup right now.
  12. My first 6: Trent Thornton Teoscar Hernandez Sean Reid-Foley TJ Zeuch Ryan Borucki Rowdy Tellez Next 3: Elvis Luciano Jacob Waguespack Travis Shaw
  13. My bad, I fixed it. Thanks.
  14. A fun little exercise from MLBTR here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/05/blue-jays-expansion-draft.html I've edited the list a bit because they were a little too picky with their guaranteed spots. Protected: Hyun-Jin Ryu Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Nate Pearson Bo Bichette Cavan Biggio Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Danny Jansen Reese McGuire Anthony Kay Unprotected: Anthony Alford Ryan Borucki Jonathan Davis Yennsy Diaz Brandon Drury Derek Fisher Wilmer Font Sam Gaviglio Randal Grichuk Teoscar Hernandez Elvis Luciano Billy McKinney Thomas Pannone Sean Reid-Foley Tanner Roark Jordan Romano Travis Shaw Rowdy Tellez Trent Thornton Jacob Waguespack T.J. Zeuch Your job is to pick six players for your first tier and then three more players to protect after the first round. Who do you think a hypothetical expansion team would select?
  15. I agree. All of the staff, including Shapiro and Atkins, have surely spent more time than usual reviewing the amateur draft prospects this season.
  16. I highly recommend reading this article if you don't already know the story. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/mantle-piece/
  17. Definitely a combination of injuries and off field distractions. It's fair to wonder if New York and Los Angeles were the best places for him to deal with those issues. In his somewhat healthy age 36 season, he was still raking so he never lost the ability. He could have been the 4th member of the 500 HR and 300 SB club with Mays, Bonds, and Rodriguez with better health.
  18. I wasn't exactly staying on script, but I meant to show how their poor performance has had such a huge impact on the composition of their all-time team. Who's to say there isn't a Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, or Barry Bonds on our all-time team in an alternate universe where the Jays are bad. One that stands out to me is 1979 where the Mets got the first overall pick, despite winning 10 more games than us. Darryl Strawberry could have (maybe should have) been a Hall of Famer in different circumstances. It's interesting to think about.
  19. The Mariners have had 4 first overall picks and a total of 9 bottom 3 picks. Outside of Griffey and Rodriguez, the most well known is probably Jose Cruz Jr, who had almost all of his success with the Jays. They have lost over 90 games in more than one third (15) of their seasons. The Jays have done so 6 times and only twice after their inaugural seasons. In fact, last season was our worst since 1979. The Mariners don't get the credit they deserve for their futility, especially with all of the star players mentioned in this thread.
  20. I agree that they don't, but it doesn't mean that I have to like it. We'll never again see anything like the 22 inning game against the Dodgers where Youppi got ejected. I'll still watch, but I'm probably too used to the old way to ever truly enjoy the runner on 2nd thing. Hopefully the new fans will adjust to it better than things like the shootout. Hockey fans young and old universally dislike it even after all this time.
  21. Those 58 games of 15 innings or more make up a substantial portion of the best games to watch during that time period. I get the economics, but it would truly be a shame to lose out on a good portion of the best baseball games that we will see from each season. Think back to your own favourite regular season memories and a large chunk of them will be extra inning games.
  22. Roster difficulties don't support your statement that viewership drops off dramatically in extra innings. Are more people watching the 9th inning of a 13-1 trouncing than the 10th inning of a 3-3 nail biter? I don't know either way, but it isn't as clear as you suggest.
  23. Interesting take. Why do they order the teams from worst to best, with additional compensation for teams that lose players and have small markets? Call me crazy, but that seems better for bad and poor teams.
  24. That could be true, but do you have numbers to support that?
