  1. Ya you're absolutely right. Lets Travis develop too, in case he isn't ready this year. No need to rush him in this scenario. I still feel McCarthy is the exact type pitcher AA should be after, too. Pushes everyone down a spot on the depth chart (other than Stroman). Makes up for the hit they took with the Donaldson trade. Great peripherals, shouldn't cost a fortune. I don't ever feel confident predicting FA values, but a 3 year deal bridges the gap to guys like Norris, Hoffman, Osuna, Castro etc, while helping the staff this year.
  2. I would have to think Markakis + draft pick is way more valuable than Melky. Markakis himself is probably more valuable than Melky. Question isn't really which one IMO, it's can the Jays afford either?
  3. You're probably right. But if he spends the whole year in the pen (which I wouldn't put past AA), what happens to him next year? You essentially would have to use him as a long man/6th starter next year to limit his innings to ~120. I'd rather find out that Sanchez can't cut it as a starter, than having him bounce back and forth between the pen and rotation/AAA for the next few seasons. Give the kid some rope in AAA to start the year, give the team some SP depth. As JFaS pointed out earlier, a BP only really needs 2 above average BP arms. AA should be able to get a couple more guys through FA/waiver wire/trades. No need to have Sanchez start this year in the pen.
  4. Ya exactly. There are better options that can be had for less. Allows for more money to be spent on the pen/2b/SP too. Honestly, adding Saunders, McCarthy and a couple bullpen arms make me think this team has a legit post season shot. 2B is going to be Travis' come May anyhow. The only real question would be who backs up Reyes in the event of an injury (right now its probably Goins). Realistically, AA probably makes a couple more moves. I just think those moves are better spent on LF/SP/BP than on 2B, when we have someone (hopefully) ready to step in who profiles to be at LEAST league average.
  5. Ya you're right I didn't say that properly. I was just referring to Sanchez being in the bullpen to start this year, and my concerns with how that may hinder his development.
  6. Really don't mind giving Smoak a chance in the RC. Getting him out of SEA could do wonders for him.
  7. It doesn't really make sense for either team. Happ is probably a 5th starter for them. Why would they want to pay Navarro 5 mil to be the back up? Why would the Jays want to pay Reyes 15 million to be SEA's SS, and replace him with Chris Taylor? Edit: exactly what GD and everyone else said many of times. If a trade doesn't create dialogue, it's likely not fair.
  8. Not even remotely.
  9. I really hope AA is targeting McCarthy. He won't cost a ton, threw 200 innings last year, and can probably be counted on for ~180 quality innings this year. Stroman McCarthy Hutch Dickey Buehrle Happ Estrada Sanchez Norris Seems like a rotation with some upside in Stro, Hutch and McCarthy, and a couple inning eaters with Dickey and Buerhle.
  10. I don't see why everyone is so quick to dismiss Happ. He's a serviceable #5. Depth took a little hit with the Donaldson trade. What happens if Sanchez blows up?
  11. Yup seems like the same type scenario we might see with Sanchez.
  12. Not necessarily. Throwing simulated games or extra bull pens isn't the same as the real game innings they could be getting. Just seems like valuable development time they're missing.
  13. What kind of damage would it do long term to have a guy out of the pen for the whole year instead of maturing as a SP in aaa? I understand bringing guys like that up in August or September to watch innings. Maybe it's very minimal, but it seems long term they would be better off getting the innings.
  14. And if you can acquire Peter Forsberg at a discount, you do it.
  15. Hahaha that might be a more appropriate name Nah, no ill hate towards Goins. Just he isn't served as anything more than a 25th man on this team. I could live with that.
  16. Haha yup, my bad fellas. Although, I still think it could fit Goins too! Takes me back to the Damon Stoudamire days in TO
  17. Haha pretty much the perfect name for Goins
  18. Am I the only one who's really not comfortable with trading anymore prospects? The most valuable prospects are on the cusp of being big league contributors, and the rest of what makes up the Jays farm system seem to be years away and not hold as much value across the league (although Barretto seems to make an exception). Maybe I'm tired and not thinking straight, but a couple more deals (I'm looking at you, Brandon McCarthy and Jed Lowrie) along with putting together a bullpen and this team looks pretty good. I just don't see a scenario where the Jays line up with the Mariners for Saunders that makes sense for both teams. I'd love him (then McCarthy, then Lowrie, in that order), but without a 3rd team not sure how it would get done.
  19. Absolutely. Basically turned Marcum, a 6th rd pick, a punted pick to save $$ and an IFA into the game's best three bagger. Well done Alex, well done. I don't hate this trade for the A's. It has potential to work out. What I would hate as an A's fan would be the timing. Just seems irrational and with no clear plan.
  20. Couldn't agree more. Pitchers are some of the oddest people in the world too it seems. They all have their own routines unique to themselves to help them prepare for their start. Just because he's not tossing our former 3B Brett Lawrie alley oops in the clubhouse doesn't mean he's a cancer. If anything, some of those guys (and current guys) could learn a thing or two from the way Dickey approaches his job.
  21. AA also did a good job selling high on the three prospects, especially Graveman.
  22. I'm perfectly fine with RA Dickey staying put in Toronto. Especially if AA can kick his side kick Thole, to the curb. Why is it so hard to DFA Josh Thole? His only real value is that Dickey likes him as a catcher, so why would anyone else really want him? Stash him in AAA, only needing him if it turns out Martin can't catch Dickey.
  23. That's not to say they aren't valuable. That's why building depth and trading from it is a beautiful thing
  24. This is the exact type of trade where giving up prospects doesn't hurt nearly as much. An efficient use of them, not like the Dickey trade. AA putting together another good farm system has paid off.
