I don’t really care how the Mets or Padres operate. The real question is does spending aggressively in free agency end up in World Series championships? History tells us no which makes it an inefficient way of building a team. Most of the World Series winners over the last decade had a home grown nucleus that was supplemented with free agents or trades Astros- yes Braves- yes Dodgers- sort of Nationals- yes Red Sox - yes Astros- yes Cubs- yes Royals- yes Giants- yes Red Sox- don’t remember

Agreed. The team is not considerably worse than the end of the year. In fact the team is better than it was to start the season last year and they have the entire season to make additions/call up players like they did this year. Remember they had guys like Katoh and Collins on the bench to start the year last year. That won’t be the case this year.

Kepler has always been an interesting guy, I wouldn’t hate that. Would prefer a couple of the other guys first but would lump him with Pollock and Profar for sure.

That would be exciting and make them immediate World Series contenders but would handicap a lot of other moves. Idk I’ve always been a little risk averse. Leave some wiggle room in case of emergency.

Exactly. They’re just really really good at development. Same as the Rays, Cards, Braves, Astros That’s the model to replicate, not spend spend spend

Rogers is always going to operate with constraints. This isn’t Mike Illitch’s Tigers or Steve Cohen’s Mets Like lots of others have said the only FA contract I even would’ve wanted is Verlander’s Like the Boston Red Sox have twice dumped superstar players in order to get out from bad contracts

I don’t think willingness to sit on dead money at the end of a deal is a sign of supporting a team I think it’s more likely that Preller and Dombroski know they won’t be there forever and those contracts will be someone else’s problem.

Ya good point, two and three years of control vs FA next year. Lose a draft pick Teo would’ve brought back. Raising the floor of the team. I get how people get frustrated watching them make small moves like this, but it’s better than tying yourself to some of these albatross contracts.

It’s just hard to wrap your head around a 24M extension for Kevin Pillar I was hoping there would be a corner outfielder to pair with him if this move was made. Conforto or Brantley would be nice. Not sure that happens now but we’ll see Salaries are nuts right now. Not a fan but it is what it is
