  1. The platoon splits that right handed hitters demonstrate tend to be much smaller than lefties. I think the average wOBA split for LHB is about 9% but for RHB it's more like 6%. Meaning the typical LHB will be 9% worse against same-side pitching, while the typical RHB is only 6% worse against same-side pitching. Because of this, I would also assume that the hitters who exhibit NO platoon splits are more likely to be RHB. Righties don't get dusted by ROOOGYs the same way lefties get dusted by LOOOGYs. Even to the point that it is a concern (say the true talent platoon splits of Bo, Vlad, and Teo all end up being more like 9%) it's a problem that is solvable by just plugging one LHB in between them, or even one RHB with no true talent platoon split. So it's not really an intractable long term problem.
  2. Doesn't matter as much when it happens in this direction. A lot of these right handed hitters won't exhibit huge platoon splits. Now having a lineup of mostly lefties is probably a bad idea.
  3. Yeah but they're all freaks. If I look at a population and notice that a subset of the population is more likely to be/do something (say I notice short+bald people are more likely to order a wife from Russia), if I then look WITHIN that subset of the population that specific dependent variable will likely just look normally distributed within the subset. Plenty of short+bald people don't order their wives from Russia.
  4. Big difference between being a normal height + strong like Trout and being someone with a glandular disorder that makes them a freakish giant like Judge and Stanton. You'd never expect abnormally tall/big people to hold up. Terrible point here, Connor.
  5. Fragile is the opposite of robust. You just said the same thing as me. I dunno, I'm not a doctor. Mike Trout's bigger muscles could provide structural support to his body, though. Of course it is all very complicated but when you watch Byron Buxton with his gazelle frame and gracile bone structure "glide" around the field you don't really think of someone who will be able to avoid breaking bones all the time while playing sports.
  6. Watch the Tom Segura attempted dunk injury. Hilarious. Not sure there are more or less injuries in either sport though. You'd have to run an analysis. The thing with basketball is that so much of the sport is rhythm - the players don't know what is going to happen exactly but their internal clocks can kind of time the flow of the game/plays. On the contrary a lot of baseball is purely reactionary.
  7. If he is truly more injury prone then there is a reason for it. It's not a physical trait that just exists in the abstract.
  8. Too big for shortstop, just like everyone said when he was a prospect. I guess.
  9. Yeah he plays incredibly hard and has explosive athleticism, but his frame is not exactly robust. 6'2" 190 compared to, say, a tank like Mike Trout at 6'2" 235
  10. He's 15th and 12th on the two lists posted. If anything we are overrating him
  11. There is a service time threshold too, for rookie status, and IIRC they even tweaked it for 2020 because of the shortened season. I think it's only 45 days of active service time. In normal seasons September does not count as far as the active service time goes.
  12. Never. I can't speak to the 80s or early 90s, but as long as I've been a fan the team has absolutely never been in a position this good, as far as projecting long term total talent.
  13. Griffin Conine, maybe. I'm sure if he was still in the org many would have him inside the top 20
  14. If he chokes again when he is promoted then I'll be ready to drop him down
  15. Some of those guys don't have prospect eligibility anymore. Hatch for sure. I'd probably go something like: Martin _____ Pearson Moreno Kirk _____ Groshans SWR Manoah _____ Orelvis Murray Smith _____ Van Eyk Hiraldo Beltre Adams _____ Lopez Kloff Pardinho De Castro Frasso Robberse Brown Palmer Logue? Taylor Young Melean Robertson Machado Jimenez Barger Britton Danner Paulino The rest Chose not to rank the arms with MLB experience aside from Pearson/Manoah, even if some of them still happen to hang onto prospect status. Order doesn't mean much towards the bottom there.
  16. This has to be one of the most impressive weeks in baseball history.
  17. I feel like his name recognition is going to lead to an undeserved promotion, and there will be a very minor opportunity cost to that. Not a big deal.
  18. I would rather call up almost anyone from AAA. The beard and veteran presents are just a trap for the team to give him way too much rope. And once he gets into a a routine of pitching, that fastball is probably more like 94, scraping 98 once a week. f***, 98 doesn't even matter anymore. Half of our scrub relievers are touching 97/98.
  19. John Axford is 38 years old. He last pitched in 2018, to a 5.27 ERA. The year before he had an ERA over 6.00. He's not helping the MLB team. I'm hoping this is 95% a favour to Axford and he will go to Buffalo. Maybe he really wanted one more shot so they said fine.
  20. There is basically only ONE thing to legitimately complain about on the position player side and it's that the defense is not great. Bo - has played a competent but below average SS Biggio - has played a competent but below average 3B Grichuk - is maybe playing a bit over his head in CF, expect regression Teoscar - is playing fine but probably regresses to a below average RF Gurriel - boneheaded fielder with a cannon Catcher - losing Jansen hurts on defense, all things considered Panik - providing mediocre bench D No nightmares but lots of room for improvements. Springer coming back should be a decent boost. They could upgrade CF and LF or RF on most nights, if Grichuk moves to a corner. I wonder if bringing up some young/athleticism at some point (thinking Smith, Moreno, Lopez) could be a good cascade. Less reliance on the aging Panik in the field, competition for Biggio at the corner.
  21. Kirk and Moreno were basically free prospects. I think they signed for $50k combined. f***ing mental.
  22. Huuuuge development. Imagine Springer CF, Kirk DH, Moreno 3B, Biggio and Gurriel platooning in LF
  23. Yeah I'm taking Adley, didn't mean to imply that Gabe is a better prospect. I just wanted to express that Gabe has a non zero chance of being the better player to show how steep his ascent has been
