  1. Matt Stairs slander is a punishable offense on this message board Stairsy played basically his entire career after his physical prime. In the alternate universe where he is a Hall of Famer he comes up in 1992 or 1993 and sticks as a full time player, benefits from MLB coaching, figures a bunch of stuff out early, and has some legendary Expos seasons with 40+ bombs. So he's at like 30 WAR before even beginning the Matt Stairs career from 29 onward that we all know and love. And then maybe he benefits from voters digging his 600 career HR or something like that even though he only has 48 career WAR and he sneaks into the Hall.
  2. Hagen "Late Dump" Danner
  3. Mattingly and Olerud's gap in HoF recognition has very little to do with how often they played or their actual merit and basically everything to do with batting average and PRODUKSHUN Mattingly hit .300+ in 7 seasons, 6 of them being consecutive and in his prime. He also hit 30+ HR a few times and had some godly RBI seasons. Olerud only hit .300 four times and ended up under .300 for his career. He was not capable of hitting 30+ HR. He limped over 100 RBI a few times. Even if he played 162 games every year of his prime he probably would never have eclipsed 30 dingers. Basically, people just did not care about OBP during Olerud's career and not enough during his HoF candidacy period. It's unfortunate but that's the whole story. OBP ignorance. Leave Cito alone.

omfggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg how could anyone wear his jersey
  5. tooooooooooooo manyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy assuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumptionssssssssssssssssssssssssss
  6. It did matter to Houston earlier in the playoffs when Garcia like single handedly won the Seattle game It could be a big deal tonight when / if Philly throws their SP4 slot. The gap between Syndergaard and Verlander is massive. The series might as well be 3-2 right now.
  7. Even if it is 600 extra PA he just goes from a fringe HOF to a fringe HOF. Nothing fundamentally changes. And many/most of his extra PA would have come against LHP too so they would be below average PA for him. wRC+ in his career was only 101 against leftties. So we are talking about John Olerud with 57 career WAR and 255 career homers vs. John Olerud with 60 career WAR and 270 career homers. Something like that. Cito probably did not ruin his legacy.
  8. I dunno. At most he probably gets like 400 extra career PA if never platooned.
  9. replacement talent theory you give positions bigger positional adjustments when the pool of talent who can play the position competently is scarce it turns out that the pool of players who can handle 1B is not much smaller than the pool who can DH there is a reason that people describe players who are useless defensively as "1B/DH" types so it turns out that a -5 1B is as bad as someone who literally does not play defense and a -4 1B who gets more playing time will accrue as much negative D value as a DH (as is the case with Vlad and JDM). But Vlad isn't really a -4 1B in my opinion. I think that's just a 2022 blip or a measurement error. He looks good.
  10. okay, well every qualified first baseman not named C. Walker sucks by that measure and is in the bottom 25th percentile of qualified position players. so sorry but not sorry because your initial comment just made it seem like you didn't know what you were looking at
  11. Based on OAA? Defensive metrics for 1B are pretty weird / dumb. Almost everybody other than Walker (big +) and Lowe (big -) fall into a tight band, within 4 runs of zero. It's not like other positions where range matters ALL THE TIME and you get TONS OF MEASUREMENTS of range in a season. Eye test says Vlad is very good there and he did lead qualified 1B in "scoops." Great hands, strong arm, above average athleticism. Could improve in a few ways of course. He led the AL in DRS, the defensive stat that predated UZR and OAA So when he has a -4 OAA but the best qualified 1B in the AL only have +1 and +2 OAA should that stat really be the difference maker? Probably not given the nature of it.

Not all stars are created equal. It's like Trout vs Judge Judge can have a 10 WAR season too but Trout is still just way better at baseball
  13. nah it's a 540 McTwist

McDavid is a tier above Matthews and Draisaitl is a tier above Marner.
  15. Great bench coach for that team. He might be the best bench coach in baseball now. Underemployed. Sort of. I would not be shocked to see him managing the White Sox in a couple years.
  16. I enjoyed watching the Phillies hit a bunch of tanks f*** Houston! but I did turn the game off in the 6th inning
  17. Yeah I can’t believe they didn’t yank him as soon as it was 4-0
  18. Yeah there is almost nothing they NEED to do. It would let a certain chunk of the fanbase down but if they did literally nothing other than tinker on the edges of the roster that would be justifiable. Almost nobody from their good 2022 team is a free agent
  19. I do think the team could trade Teoscar but it's just another one of those small possibilities they will put on their very Ross Atkins-y whiteboard of non-aggressive brainstormed general possibilities for offseason discourse. Offseason Explorations - trade a catcher - trade Teoscar to get a longer term asset and/or open up payroll space - trade Gurriel if another team likes him a lot - move Springer to a corner and bring in a solid defensive CF. This upgrades the entire OF defense and will help Springer stay healthy. - trade Espinal or Biggio or Merrifield depending on the immediate roster fit of the return - extend any of Bo, Kirk, Vlad, Manoah - acquire a switch hitter or LHB who can hit 5th or better - non-tender Tapia in a really mean and vindictive way - diagnose Berrios' problem and develop action plan to make him better - acquire a backend SP of the reliable variety - acquire better depth SP (MiLB) - acquire higher upside RP - explore Moreno as a 3B/2B - stat-scout replacements on the depth chart for all of Hatch, Kay, Thornton, Griffin... basically anyone on the 40 who started in AAA this year. Because WOOF. so a Teoscar swap is possible... perhaps not likely

Really just one too many *******s on the team. Not much any coach can do to get the best out of Kyrie and Durant at this point in their careers where they are both obtuse and grumpy old men.
  21. Even at his 2022 performance Teo has a bit of surplus value over what he will get in his final arb. Methinks. Pretty cool and good that he is the team's 7th best player though.
  22. they will definitely not contend but they THINK they can contend lmao
  23. owed $7.5M, $12M, $12M, $12M, $14M team option in 2027 6.2 fWAR in 59 GS over the last 3 seasons... so he might be a 3.1 WAR pitcher by true talent. But by BR he is only at 4.8 WAR over that timeframe. So it's more holistic to think of him as a 2.4 to 3.1 WAR true talent. Always some risk when a player leaves the Rockies for various reasons, just a weird org and weird place to play. will turn 28 over the winter boring skill set; low K and GB profile does not scream upside, at all... I mean the Rockies would be MORONS to not do the trade. Senzatela should not have as much value as Jansen; his contract is pretty close to what he might get in free agency I think at most there is like a $10M or $15M gap between his contract and what he would get in FA which is essentially his market value. I think Jansen as a guy who seems to have unlocked 4+ WAR upside and maybe 5 WAR upside carried more value.
