    Very calculated offseason by him: leave AA's team intact, add a few arms on short contracts. If they win, great. If they lose, it was the same group as 2015 and the new regime hasn't added a single long term deal.

    The more I think about it, the more I hope they walk away from Bautista and Edwin. We might be seeing first hand the downside of guys signed to 20M contracts into their late 30s. Adding one or two more to Tulo and Martin would be scary. Extend Donaldson though!

    But really, the team's 10-13 start isn't a mystery, and the problem isn't lack of effort. - Above average starting 2B hasn't played a single game, and the replacements have been replacement level. - Star high priced catcher has been ridiculously awful and might be hurt. - Star high priced shortstop has been just about average. - Star DH who is a top-10 hitter in the league has been a league average hitter. - bullpen has gone through a bad stretch to start the season There's nothing fundamentally wrong here - it comes down to disappointing play from four top players, and a slow start from the bullpen. That's a lot to overcome. None of these guys are playing poorly because they're not trying.

    Barney has to be hurt. It was bad enough to start Goins, but to let him face Duke late in the game with Barney on the bench is egregious.

    Career wRC+ vs. LHP: Goins = 40 Barney = 92 It sucks that your everyday 2B is out, but at least do everything you can to replace the production. I don't think anyone can really complain about Goins getting most/all starts vs. RHP, but there's no reason for him to start over Barney with a lefty on the mound. Unless Barney is hurt.

    When stars test positive for steroids and claim innocence they're treated like human scum. When scrappy old guys who shouldn't even be in the league test positive for steroids and claim innocence, it's a national tragedy. Both extremes are silly.

    We're supposed to take players who test positive for illegal substances at their word and assume a false positive test? The overwhelming likelihood is that Colabello either intentionally ingested synthetic testosterone, or was negligent about what he ingested. Neither makes him a bad person, but they make him unworthy of pity to a lot of people, and I think that's fair.
