I enjoy that Smoak can't even get into the lineup a couple months after signing a multi-year extension.
I'd be pretty excited about his departure right now if he weren't signed
It's pretty rare that big market teams get more than 1-2 years into a big FA deal and don't regret their decision.
I wouldn't be upset if the team flexed some financial muscle on a 7-8 year Donaldson extension though.
I was pretty sure a month or two ago that I was in this camp, but now I'm not really sure. He's going to finish at about 2 fWAR and is still riding a BABIP 35 points above his career BABIP. Not sure that's the best way to spend $17M.
So what's everyone's predictions for the team's free agents?
Bautista - offered QO and signs somewhere else for 3/75 with an opt-out after year 1
Encarnacion - offered QO and signs somewhere else for 4/100
Saunders - accepts QO
Dickey - signs somewhere else for 1/7
Feldman - signs somewhere else for 2/15
Benoit - re-signs for 1/4
Cecil - signs somewhere else for 2/12
Navarro - re-signs for 1/3
Thole - continues to leech off Dickey for league min
Roman Quinn is healthy and looking pretty good. Starting to think I should have traded Zagunis instead. He could be like an Odubel Herrera with 30+ steals.
The team had one of the best offenses of the last couple decades last season, and they did it with patient power hitters looking to put the ball in the air to their pull side. It's amazing that people who watched this think that the key to unlocking the offense is to slap more balls the other way.
I held until yesterday when reports came out that he wasn't responding well to treatment and Pittsburgh has no idea when he'll be back. It sucks because he's been great all year and is an easy keeper, but a playoff team can't really stash an injured reliever during their run. Yahoo lets you IR players with day-to-day injured status for hockey, and this capability should have been added for baseball years ago.
Yeah, it benefits playoff teams, but I don't think spittin actually intended to set it up this way, and I've never played in a dynasty that locked the rosters of eliminated teams. I don't see the harm in changing it now.
Very good point.
