  1. This might surprise you, but I actually wouldn't make a value judgement on someone who got in an argument with their spouse and took their car out for a spin while over the limit. It's objectively unproductive, but it's also an understandable response to a serious stress. I don't think you really understand how much your actions are dictated by your genetics and experience, and how much a stressful event can cause you make irrational choices.
  2. I didn't want to go there, but yeah. Someone who isn't even drinking age who was raised not to touch alcohol calling a guy scummy and selfish for having drinks and taking his boat on the ocean is just too much.
  3. No, but it should prevent you from getting on your soapbox and making value judgments about how someone reacted to a situation that you can't possibly relate to.
  4. Yeah, I'd probably do it. But I think the value is still a few million $ in favour of LA. I don't know if the difference is Barnes, but it should be something.
  5. There is absolutely nothing selfish or scummy about Fernandez responding to a serious argument with the mother of his child by having drinks and taking his boat out. It obviously wasn't the best way to blow off steam, but the self-righteous indignation is just too much. You have no idea what he was feeling at the time, and the outrage is completely unproductive. Especially from someone who, frankly, can't relate because they're 18 years old and were raised in a very conservative environment. It comes off the same as a 300-pound shut-in condemning Tiger Woods for cheating on his wife.
  6. Yeah, I actually like Ethier a bit. I still think you'd project him at around a win, and cross your fingers that he's healthy and gives you 2. Would you do Smoak for Ethier straight up?
  7. Ethier + Barnes for Smoak is really the only framework I can see working. Smoak is an 8.4 M sunk cost. Ethier is owed 20.5M for one year and will probably project at like 1 win in a platoon role, so he's worth like -12M. A straight swap of the two has the Dodgers picking up like 4-5 in projected surplus value, so Barnes evens that out.
  8. Ha, weren't there a bunch of people outraged about the mother in the whole Harambe incident?
  9. With all due respect, aren't you an 18-19 year old who has spent his entire life under the watchful eye of parents who are at least middle class? I ask because you often come off as really judgemental on topics like this, maybe overlooking the idea that not everyone has the same experience as you.
  10. I get a kick out of the black and white internet mentality in which people are defined by their worst mistakes. Actually I don't, it's really sad.
  11. Trading with the Dodgers makes me nervous. Their only catcher next year is Grandal, who tends to get hurt, so it seems like a great chance to break Barnes in. If they don't want to do that, why not?
  12. Please no Jeff Mathis. We're finally rid of that parasite Thole. Replacing him with Thole v1.1 would be so unsexy.
  13. Cleveland is going to pick up his option, without question.
  14. Maybin would be nice, but I think Detroit will pick up his $9M option.
  15. There isn't really an argument for him winning last year, unless your issue is with requiring a CF, LF, and RF to win.
  16. I think the problem is that KingKat is our only active mod.
  17. Can we please permaban this moron?
  18. I agree with you, but in the context of this discussion, Turner isn't likely interested in signing with a team that already has JD, and the money it would likely cost to get him to play 1B primarily will be prohibitive, because you're still paying for his high-end 3B defense.
  19. Mods, please ban BBBB. Thx.
  20. lol, the current team costs like $117M and probably finishes under 0.500. Less than 140M would basically be impossible given the current structure of the team.
  21. There was an article on FG a few weeks ago talking about player peaks. IIRC Donaldson's 5-year peak is one of the top-100 in MLB history, and that includes his 1.5 win 2012. This isn't Vernon Wells. This is a HOF caliber talent. Obviously there's still risk, but as you say, we're talking a completely different quality of player.
  22. These two were so bizarre. They really stick out, because everything else they've done was logical and well-thought out. The Smoak deal in particular just didn't make any sense.
  23. Yeah, you're right 13.5 fWAR so far on the deal. 9.33M/WAR if he adds nothing next year. If he adds a win and gets it down to ~8.7M/win over the life of the contract, it's not a disaster. I doubt they have any serious regrets, though if he were healthier it obviously would have been better.
  24. Jayson Werth (7/126 starting at 32) was fine Cano (10/240 starting at 31) looks like it might actually be OK - already 13.3 fWAR Holliday (7/120 starting at 30) was fine Beltre (5/96 starting at 32) You'd have to really believe in the player. And you really don't want to go past 37-38. Anything taking the player to 39-40 is probably a terrible idea.
