Players voted for the player they “most respect based on his leadership on the field and in the community.” Apparently people are defined by one incident, and the players are wrong to hold high respect for Reyes.

As you say, the hit was fine. Matheson used his size and strength advantage to separate Pettersson from the puck and remove him from the play. What happened after was not fine: grabbing the shoulders of a player off balance from the hit and shoving him to the ice back first when he's not in a position to protect himself is a dangerous play, and the outcome (concussion) isn't really surprising. There's room for physical contact, but hockey is not a combat sport. Hopefully the NHL chooses to protect its stars. We'll see how the hearing goes today.

I made the mistake of going to HFBoards to read the hot takes on this play. So many posts abut how it was a hockey play that maybe warranted a 2-minute minor. Apparently Pettersson isn't strong enough for NHL. What the NHL needs is one of the most talented players in the world staying in Sweden because 176 lbs is too light to prevent him from being checked, then body-slammed WWE-style to the ice back first while he's still off balance from a hit.

I like the ring of Danny Jansen: franchise catcher. We've probably taken consistency at the C position for granted with Martin here the last 4 years, but that's so huge for a pitching staff.

Literally nobody is convinced Merryweather will ever be a #3 starter. He’s just the kind of guy we should be adding on the cheap hoping a couple pan out.

Paying assets for pitching prospects is almost always a bad idea. Pick up interesting arms on the cheap when you can, or a trade for/sign actual healthy MLB arms. The odds of a highly touted MiLB arm actually contributing as a good MLB starter are so small.

I don’t think they necessarily need another 5+ win guy to compete. It’s amazing what can be accomplished by not giving playing to terrible players.

I think we're looking at a Jeff Mathis kind of player in McGuire, so it doesn't really bother me to option him to AAA until he's needed.

Well, most of Martin's 2019 salary is a sunk cost, so you're not really paying $16M for two prospects if you don't think he'll provide much value on the field. That said, I'd rather just keep him around for a final year than eat 80% of his contract for a couple of fringe guys. Hope he retires after 2019 and moves into another role in the org. Does anyone really have a burning desire to see Reese McGuire on the team full time immediately?
