  1. Yup. He's always come off as thoughtful and intelligent to me. Legitimately surprised that he put himself into this position. As you say, even under the most charitable reading of this situation he's a short-sighted idiot.
  2. Soto has been disappointing this year, and I've shown a lot of restraint in not complaining about him TBH.
  3. Dodgers score 6 times. Bellinger 1-5 with a single. Classic Bellinger.
  4. What I was getting at and didn't word well is that I think we're going to be left with an unsatisfying outcome. I'm no lawyer, but it seems like an odd situation in that we know that he did what she's accusing him of, and now its about trying to determine things like intent and consent in the aftermath. I think the most likely outcome here is that the allegations (that he hit her and choked her unconscious) are true, but that he's not found legally guilty of a crime. Different people will have different opinions on what this says about him.
  5. Can MLB suspend him indefinitely? Because there's no way he's playing before a decision is made on whether or not he's facing criminal action. MLB might not have enough information yet to determine length of the suspension.
  6. I keep seeing people say things like "if he's guilty" or "if allegations are proven" and I'm not really sure what kind of binary revelation people are expecting. This is never not going to be a shade of grey, unless there's a lot of evidence that we haven't yet seen.

The "18M over the cap" people are throwing around is just silly. Gaborik and Nilsson were like 9M of that and didn't play all season or playoffs.
  8. Has a star player who didn't see prison time ever lost an MLB career because of something like this? If Bauer ends up going to jail I don't think he'll play again, but based on what's been made public, it's hard to see him going to jail.
  9. I'm trying to think of hitters who put up MVP-caliber seasons at a young age and then saw dramatic declines in performance before 30 without having career-altering injury issues. Nobody is really coming to mind, but I might just be missing obvious examples. I still think Bellinger is going to end up as a well above-average hitter with good counting stats because of the lineup, but he is a complete mess right now.
  10. Feels like every time I check the boxscores the Dodgers have scored 7 runs and Bellinger is 0-3 with a walk.

Are there actually people who want a "playoff cap" who don't also believe Kucherov was deliberately held out? Because this is a fundamental disagreement with the cap being calculated as a pro-rated sum of daily cap hits for the entirety of the regular season. The cap has been around for 15-20 years, and I don't recall ever seeing people advocate for preventing teams from ever rostering a team whose summed cap hits exceed the cap, even for a short period. This would kill the trade deadline, and disincentivize teams from adding meaningful replacements for long term injuries. My impression is that the entire debate about the cap started this year, from a conspiracy theory about TB's handling of Kucherov. Is anyone complaining that Boston was "over the cap" because of the Taylor Hall addition?

It isn’t an argument that the cap shouldn’t exist. It’s existed in this format for 18 years or whatever. You’re really just arguing for a more restrictive cap.

Connor McDavid goes down with an injury 10 games into the season. Doctors say he might be back for the second round of the playoffs, if Edmonton gets there. The Oilers use the cap space gained by McDavid’s LTIR stint to acquire a good C with an 8M cap hit, at the cost of a 1st and a couple of good prospects. They trade for a D upgrade with a 3M hit at the deadline. Do people actually believe the Oilers should have to pull 11M or whatever in salary out of their lineup for cap reasons in the playoffs if McDavid is able to come back?

Because a team's cap number is just the pro-rated cap hit of all players on their roster for every day of the regular season. That's why teams with 2M in cap space at the start of the year can add a 7M player at the deadline. Closing this "loophole" also kills the trade deadline, and for what? Does the NHL expect there to be teams that will start asking players to sit out entire seasons with fake injuries and come back for the playoffs? If so, there are probably ways to tackle the expected widespread fraudulent injuries that don't consist of completely changing the way the salary cap is calculated.

How would they even do that? Teams have been “exceeding the cap” in this way with mid-season acquisitions since the cap was introduced.
  16. I think Hurl's team is the first I've ever faced in a 20-team league with 0 active starters. And he's still in playoff contention despite that.

  18. Trevor Richards is a legit arm. This is a good trade.

There isn't even a loophole. TB is maybe the only team in the league good enough to easily make the playoffs despite losing a top-3 player in world for the entire regular season. If Auston Matthews needs surgery this offseason and is going to be out the entire season, nobody is going to call the Leafs lucky because they get to allocate his salary cap hit to their own version of Tyler Johnson and Ryan McDonagh.
  20. lol The records resulted in her story being edited to correct at least one inaccuracy regarding the skull fracture.

Every year many teams have playoff rosters that would exceed the regular season cap. This is such a stupid narrative.
  22. From what I’ve seen, the concussion was suggested using a lot of the same weasel words used to give people the impression that her skull was fractured, when in fact it wasn’t. If she had been diagnosed with a concussion, that would have likely been stated unequivocally.
  23. Don't forget Wrigley, Great American Ballpark, Truist Park, Target Field, and Kauffman.
  24. He's pretty much single-handedly tanking my season in BORED.
  25. Aroldis Chapman also sucks now.
