    I think you're misunderstanding my point. I wasn't saying that the team will be full of albatross contracts in 2017. I was saying that maintaining this roster into 2017 is going to be impossible unless payroll is going up 20-30 M, and that's without a Shields contract on the books. The only players expected to contribute in 2015 that won't be on FA contracts (or making 10+ M in arb) in 2017 are Pompey, Norris, Hutchsion, and Stroman.

    That's the way I see it. The team looks legitimately good this year, and will probably still be good next year. But given age and projected salary of their best players, 2017 looks rough. A backloaded James Shields contract doesn't help at all.

    Sure I can. Competing in 2017 will require payroll to blow past 150. You can let Bautista/Edwin walk, but the team will suck.

    Yeah. It just isn't feasible to commit another 20+ million in 2017 right now. As things stand we're already probably going to lose Edwin or Jose if payroll is staying under 150.

    2017 is already looking brutal: Reyes (22) Martin (20) Bautista (20+ if he's re-signed) Edwin (20+ if he's re-signed) Shields (20+ if he's signed)

Christ almighty things could get ugly a year or two from now. I'd like Shields, but backloading all these free agent deals is going to make it impossible to compete after 2016.

    You're asking how much the Detroit infield has helped Porcello?

    Porcello is about the last guy I'd expect to 'fall off a cliff'. Zero history of arm/elbow problems, and thrives by hitting his spots and getting groundballs.

    If anything it should be Navarro + for Pennington. Pennington is better and cheaper than Navarro.

    I hadn't seen the thread - just Boxy's post saying House for Owings. House for a 1st rounder pre-cut is fair for both sides IMO.

    Why would North roster Owings past the cut? I like the House side of this.

    Really? It's pretty rare to see multi-year deals that don't take the player out of arb.

    Now would have been a good time to try and get a longer-term deal done. He'll be tough to keep after a big year with free agency looming after 2016.

    Hard to go wrong with a 6-8 M gamble on a guy with 4-5 win upside. He'll at least be a solid 4th OF.

    The Markakis deal was awful. I think letting all three walk was the right move. OF is fine with Pearce/Jones/De Aza and maybe a platoon partner for De Aza. They really should do something about the rotation though. I've been saying it for years, and they keep winning, but the rotation is not good.

    The rumoured Snider/Matusz deal would have been nice for both sides. Too bad it fell through.

    You know him better than I do, but forcing your GM to continue on for 4 years in a job he tried to leave seems like a very, very bad idea.
