    No question it's a mistake by DeRosa, but I think it's a mistake by Hale too.

    Hale didn't give him any sign until he was basically past the bag. DeRosa looked up as he was about to round the bag and had no sign so he slowed down. (imo)

    His BABIP retreating doesn't mean he'll crash and burn. In 2008/2009 when he was last "right", his BABIP was around .320. That's probably a reasonable number for him when he's using the whole field. Just because he's higher than that right now doesn't mean he has to be lower later. He is just as likely to put in a BABIP around .320 for the remaining games this year, which would be fantastic for us (and probably drop him into the .340 range on the season).

    Normally I wouldn't be as concerned about the defense (especially in LF), but Melky is moving so poorly atm that putting Gose out there might literally save a hit a game.

    It seems like EE has always had a pretty good glove at 3rd, it's just the throws that mess him up. I don't think it's a solution for the entire year, but if we could do something like this for a month or so it might help get Melky's legs back on track. That would take us to the point when trades are a more realistic possibility.

    It'll help more guys clear now that compensation isn't allowed on guys who switch teams mid year, but there's no way JJ makes it through. He doesn't have a long term contract, doesn't have an overly high priced contract, and is a potential difference maker late in the season regardless of the way he's pitching right now. Someone in contention would claim him just to block other teams even if they didn't really need him themselves.

    There's pretty much zero chance he would clear waivers.

    For prospects (who may or may not be available), Wong and Profar come to mind. Perhaps Beckham from the Rays (not convinced he'd be better than Boni). Rendon or Franklin might have been nice, but neither is likely available (possibly Rendon if the Nats get really desperate for something I suppose). Castellanos would be a possibility at 3rd with Lawrie moving to 2nd. For non-prospects, it seems pretty thin other than Ackley and possibly Murphy.

    No, unless you are giving up on the season you make in season trades to make your team better, not take net downgrades. That is the kind of thing that can mean the difference between making the postseason and missing by a game or two. If we're trading Rasmus or JJ (for example), we need something like a 2nd/3rd baseman coming back who is either established or a legit ready prospect. From Detroit guys like Castellanos, Smyly, Avila would make sense for example (probably involving Janssen there).

    Doesn't matter what position he plays, he's likely at least 2 years away. It would be idiotic to take any step backward when we're trying to contend. I should have qualified that if we are definitely out of it at the deadline, THEN it might be worth some consideration. Otherwise we need to get something back that is mlb ready and at a position of need.

    With Boras as the advisor no less... It has to have been a pre draft deal. Maybe Houston offered both him and Gray the same money, and said whoever accepts is the number 1 pick. Whoever doesn't likely falls to third (3rd slot is less than that value). They might also have a handshake agreement that he's called up no later than a certain date to start his clock too.

    The only way doing something like that makes sense for us is if we blow the entire team up. Otherwise, if we trade Colby it has to be for someone who is mlb ready.

    Granderson will probably get in the 15M range, and honestly if Melky's legs are back to normal both probably provide similar overall value. I would be in favor of moving Rasmus if it will net us a good young second baseman (or 3rd baseman with Lawrie moving over). Of the other free agents, Choo would be great but will cost a boatload (especially if he maintains the season he's having so far). Boris doesn't help either. I don't think I'd be overly in favor of Morse, Cruz, or Pence.

    Detroit would seem to be a good fit for a number of different scenarios. Porcello/Smyly, possibly Castellanos. Heck, maybe even Avila is available if he's still struggling this much by the deadline. In a perfect buy low world, maybe we could nab Avila and Ackley.
