  1. He needs to adopt the approach of that closer from years ago who squinted all the time because he couldn't see the catcher's glove. Squint on the mound, tell the catcher he can't see the sign from time to time, ask the ump if the pitch was up and away on something down and in, etc. He could REALLY mess with batters!
  2. Theoretically it doesn't change much with it. The amount in deferred money should already be scaled to an inflation number like Ohtani's contract is (the reason it's 700M instead of the 460M). It has more to do with the team's budget and actual accounting than the CBT I think.
  3. Holy smokes, that was a hell of a catch!
  4. Didn't the interpreter also say that Ohtani had no knowledge of it, and the interpreter claimed he didn't know he'd done anything wrong? Nothing about the stories makes any sense at all right now. MLB not being interested in it suggests to me that they knew about this well ahead of time and the betting didn't break any MLB rules (so Ohtani's probably safe on that front). It feels like Ohtani probably made the bets, didn't realize they were potentially illegal, and he got caught in the investigation. The interpreter (who probably did the legwork) takes the fall, scuttles off to Japan where it's unlikely he's extradited for an offense like that, and probably keeps getting paid by Ohtani for looking after the house or something.
  5. Is he? Why the hell would an interpreter have access to significant sums of Ohtani's money? If he did and was misusing it, how would an accountant not have noticed until now? Did Ohtani's camp really not find out about a federal investigation until it showed up in the press? If they found out earlier, why was the interpreter still working for him yesterday? If Ohtani is innocent, there's some unbelievable incompetence in the people surrounding him. Things definitely don't add up right now. I think it's fair to question it.
  6. McElvain looks like a future reliever to me, but that probably ticks his stuff up to slightly above average on all 3 pitches. Can't complain about that.
  7. At this point I'd probably settle for an "I can't believe it isn't butter" sandwich. Seriously though, Espinal is probably better than we're giving him credit for. It's more about our other options than it is about him.
  8. Someone may wish to correct me on this, but I think it's simply for accounting purposes. The cap hit should be 31M next year in both scenarios, however by using a signing bonus instead of deferred money the payroll salary will be 23.5M this year and 8.5M next year (assuming he opts out). It probably matters either for his budget or for something related to investors.
  9. Good matchup. My boys picked a bad time to clank some 3's. Can't really complain. Had my best week of the season in two categories when it mattered most. I just got beat!
  10. Looked out to me. I think it clanked off a fan's hands in the 2nd or 3rd row.
  11. I'd say the pranks have gotten kind of boring. When's the last time you saw a hot foot in the dugout? Or someone like Pedro teasing the fans above the dugout with a string tied to a ball? Even the "fake" pranks like the commercial with Sanchez and Stroman turning on the sprinklers in the ballpark (you can bet that was based on an actual prank at some point). Let them have fun and don't be a an angry old man yelling at clouds.
  12. Just replace everything with "*******"
  13. And half the board would probably do a better job.
  14. I wonder if they meant "opener" or "bulk reliever"?
  15. Wasn't that about the time Sanchez starting getting blisters from just thinking about throwing a ball?
  16. Maybe, or maybe the pitchers would stop grooving the ball while trying to eek out an extra 2 or 3 mph.
  17. Yeah, we have an off day on the 4th, so we'd only have to fill one spot start if necessary before the 8th or 9th (and that's assuming no rainouts at Yankee Stadium). Not a big deal at this point.
  18. There has to be something else to it. Maybe he's a clubhouse problem or something. His salary for the expected production should have gotten him claimed even this late into the preseason.
  19. The problem is the money. I don't think the Astros will be able to take on a lot of extra money in a trade, and I don't think they have a salary dump to send back.
  20. Apparently he struck out 4 of 12 batters, gave up 1 hit, had the bench (literally) call out his pitches from the dugout for the final batter, and hit 99mph multiple times.
  21. No, I don't know what options are available now. I like the suggestion of not being able to start a thread for a certain number of posts though. Maybe admin could turn off website links in the threads for a little while.
  22. Manoah will win the Cy Young. This is the new bold predictions thread, right?
  23. Yeah, I agree. It's kind of like a Johnsonalanotto except with offense and defense rather than handedness.
  24. The money on IKF might be a slight overpay, but it's fine. So is the term. He needs to be used primarily as a late game replacement though who gets into maybe 130 games a year and gets 250ish PA. Unless he has a massive breakout at the plate, which seems unlikely, he shouldn't be the starting 3B. The bat just isn't there, and our team deficiency is on offense. That's the issue. I'd rather have a big bat at 3rd who is below average defensively. Our pitching staff is elite. If the 3rd baseman coughs up a few hits here and there, they have the talent to get out of it.
  25. Admin is footing the bill (or using his servers) to host this site for us. I'm just really thankful that he's willing to do so.
