I suspect the Jays are waiting to find out what happens with the QO. The fact no one seems to know if he's going to decline it or not makes me think there's at least a decent chance he accepts.

If he goes for that low a cost, we had better be the ones that get him regardless of whether Bautista accepts the QO. I wouldn't be surprised to see Reddick get up to 17M per on a 4 year deal. I don't think I saw anyone suggest 100M.

I think Gibby is pragmatic. He'll do whatever the front office wants. He's not a brilliant strategist, he's a good manager of people.

They may want to legitimately give Smoak a full time role next year. He's never been able to really put it together, but he does have some nice tools. I don't think it's impossible to see him put up 2 WAR in a full season where he's not being jerked all over the place with playing time. It may not be ideal, but if rolling Smoak out there gives us the money to put a stud in another position, so be it. Worst case, if he really bombs, bring up Tellez. If we really wanted to roll the dice, we could probably talk to one of the Texas teams about some of their guys. A guy like Profar as a super utility would be rather interesting, or one of the 1st basemen in Gallo or Singleton could be worth a shot.

Man am I having a terrible week. I've had a lot of good luck matchup wise so far this year though (certainly didn't deserve to be anywhere near 1st place), so I guess it was inevitable.

It's nearly impossible to get that player as a 4th outfielder, because they'd be a regular. Upton and Reddick combined probably give you a roughly 130 wRC+ player and somewhere in the 3.5 WAR range.

What the hell are you talking about? Reddick's last 3 years vs righties he's put up a .297 average, .355 obp, .492 slg, .847 OPS and a 136 wRC+.

Having one or two platoon bats is actually kind of ideal, if you have the right guy as the platoon partner. It means (for example) that you extract extra value out of your 4th outfielder. The Dodgers did this really effectively with Ethier and Van Slyke.

I seem to recall that every offseason the projections change quite a lot as it progresses. It's probably too early to read much into them.

McCutchen had problems with a swollen thumb last year (apparently he was gripping the bat a different way or something). I don't know why his defense was worse, whether it was aging or a nagging injury. Moving him to a corner outfield slot would probably be in the cards anyway with Pillar in center.

I wouldn't be opposed to it if the cost is low, but I think I'd rather trade for Ethier (which would likely require basically no return and some money eaten). The extra protection at 2B would be nice however.

I'd be willing to put on a cheerleader's outfit and dance around the dugout for that kind of money. The bonus is, after the first appearance they'd pay me double NOT to.

I don't think he would this time. This is probably his last contract, so moving to 1B probably wouldn't bother him once he's signed. Playing OF last year helps increase his potential fits. ... And on an unrelated note, I should know better than to click on an Ang link.

I have too, and I was 21 or 22 when it happened. Took 2 years before I stopped having pain shoot through my arm from simple things like pushing open a door, let alone throwing. I was only able to throw up to about 75% for years after.

I think I'd rather sign Saunders at similar money to Morales, if we want to go that route. Keep him (mostly) at DH rather than LF obviously.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get closer to 4/80, although I could see it being from a team that moves him to 1B.

It's an interesting question. I'm not convinced Fowler will age well. I'm a little concerned by Cespedes drop in defense and base running this year. I'm not sure if it's age or minor injury related. I'd also love to know if his spike in walk rate is the new norm or not. If it is, and if his defense returns, and if we keep him out of CF, he'd probably provide the most value of any of the people available by a good margin. Eddie's K rate has been creeping up the last few years, and over the last two he's showing less contact and a higher swinging strike rate. That's a little worrying to me when we're talking 25M / year for someone who is almost 34.

Seeing a reliever THAT many times in a series would also have given the batters multiple looks at him. I'm sure that made a difference too.

Outside of Chapman, Hill, and Jansen, those figures are WAY too low imo.

Edwin might be worth 25M / year, but I'm not sure I'd want to pay that much.
