    On first glance ... eww. After looking Hatch up ... eww. I'd rather we just kept Phelps and exercised our option on him. Someone has to pitch innings next year.

    I disagree with this. We accepted a return that's likely below market value well ahead of the deadline. If we had done this deal at the deadline, I'd be comfortable in saying it was the best deal available and be happy about it. If you're going to jump the market, do it having been blown away with an offer. That most certainly didn't happen here. The only valid reason to take that deal now, is if the Mets would otherwise trade Thor and no longer be interested in Stroman if we had waited (it sounds like they may be going for it this year now). Trading guys early who might otherwise get lost in last minute panic (like Sogard) is smart, but don't do so with your valuable chips before the hand is played.

    Getting back to the general topic, I wouldn't mind if we could pry Yadier Alvarez away from the Dodgers for Hudson. It seems like he's almost considered an afterthought now, and has had a big falling out with the organization. Seems like the kind of wildcard that could really pay off.

    Logically it should, I'm just wondering if it actually DOES? Good point on the Mexican League, although it could still lump the IL and PCL together.

    For the minors, does anyone know if Fangraphs calculated wRC+ on a league basis or level basis? In other words, do the numbers for AAA include all of the International League, PCL, and Mexican League, or does it calculate them for each one separately?

    Makes no difference if he's 5 for 44 or 30 for 44. That's a very small sample. He's been ready for a while now, just needed the room on the roster to be able to play him every day.

    Every league is different. Some of ours allow you to add an unowned player once they reach AA. Some require the player to be put on waivers, etc. For most leagues, it's a manual process, not an automatic one so each league makes different rules.

    You suggested he was sent to a (potential) non-contender out of spite. That would imply a personal motive on Atkin's part. It would be ... odd to say the least for Atkins to do so on one level, while sending him to a region he wants to be at in another. It just doesn't fit. I think the reason he was traded rather than re-signed was due to bad blood. I see no evidence that his destination had anything to do with that.

    No, I realize he wanted to go to a contender, but sending you to where your family is and where you grew up (at least in this case) is hardly a screw job. His dad seems really happy about it. I know there's a photo of him as a toddler wearing a Mets jacket as well.

    I don't think that's the case. Hell, Stroman grew up a Mets fan (I think) and has a lot of family in New York. If Atkins sent him there out of spite, he's doing it wrong. He should have sent him to Colorado or something.

    Yeah, he clearly realized immediately that he made a mistake. I will say that I thought he handled things well afterwards. He didn't try to make excuses. He made it clear that he realized he f***ed up, and apologized.

    It's actually really interesting. In theory, if you can get a team close at the deadline and have payroll flexibility, you can buy the rest at low cost and low risk without FA term. I think that's partly why the deadlines were moved and consolidated, so teams couldn't just overhaul their team for the last month of the season at no cost.

    I really didn't make many assumptions. I speculated on what the process may have looked like (the first two), but those were not used as a basis of any argument. I guess you could call it an assumption that the return we got was light, but that seems to be the consensus from pretty much everyone, both here and from those in the industry who have weighed in (along with puzzlement). Someone posted something here last night, if I remember right, from a credible source that suggested teams were already using the Stroman trade to try to justify their similar lowball offers on other available players, including those from the Mets. That may or may not be true in reality, but it wasn't an assumption. I guess it would technically be an assumption that if they're doing that with other teams, they'd likely try to do it to us with Giles as well, but it's a pretty reasonable one. I know in fantasy, when I make a trade that others consider bad, I'm flooded with bad offers after. I tend to do the same when others make suspect trades. I highly doubt it's any different for real GMs.

    It's a very small sample size (23.2 innings vs lefties). He held them to a .181/.277/.265 slash line and 2.66 ERA, but a 4.20 xFIP due to the higher walks and lack of K's. It is worth noting that he held them to an 11.4% hard hit percentage and ~62% ground ball rate.

    If guys fitting this kind of mold aren't, then they're the new market inefficiency we need to be targeting. I'd take a rotation full of Stromans and Sonny Grays all day long.

    Sanchez as a reliever has a 3.15 xFIP, 2.93 FIP, and 1.67 ERA covering 59.1 innings.

    I think what happened is the Jays identified SWR very early on as a guy they had to have at all costs, and the Mets picked up on that. They probably offered something like SWR and Smith/Kilome/Szapuki, then swapped it out to the Kay and cash version we got. A fair deal probably would have been SWR+Kay+ Smith/Kilome/Szapuki with no cash. I think we got taken. It might work out well for us in the end, but we definitely didn't get fair market value for Stroman at the time of the trade. An even bigger issue is, since this happened a few days before the deadline, other GMs in on Giles will probably feel they can also lowball us and we'll eventually accept. It sounds like this has also happened to the Mets, as rival GMs may be using the Stroman return to justify not including top prospects for Thor/Wheeler. If we were going to make this trade, at least wait until we get a stronger return on our other players.
