Half (if not more) of a F.O.'s job is to be profitable. The win and they draw thing has been said forever but it's no where near as safe as selling tickets in the off season and if the team is complete s*** still drawing 40K every weekend (and this will continue for the rest of the year at least the 500 level will be crowded). What has happened with the team not even coming close to expectations, is poorer than hoped TV ratings (remember when they hinted that they thought 1,000,000 viewers might be realistic if the team does as well as they thought it would). IF the F.O. can't build a winning ball club, they may as well be good at building up buzz and selling tickets. Question will be, can they get the casuals to be excited again? I'd say no, but the Dodgers did it for years, as have the Cubs (of course both of those parks are an experience whereas the Rogers Centre is well...not.
I say zero chance the Jays do a tear down and rebuild...this F.O. is now going to do a Dombrowski/Rizzo/Reagins pray and hope method. What we see is what we get, really only question will be whether the potential improved pitching depth will improve the team or not. There never was a plan B, there was no thought in this F.O. that this team would fail and if it did it would do so while burning the trade value of almost everyone they acquired. The minute the Jays do a completely bad PR move (trading a producing fan favourite to fill multiple holes and increase depth) I'll believe that maybe they are thinking about building a baseball team but until then I'll continue to think that they have idiots (including AA) running the show.
