Brett Bateman Is Getting Called Up to the Blue Jays

Brett Bateman, 24, was one of the two prospects that the Toronto Blue Jays acquired in the trade that sent Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. Bateman is replacing Luis Urías, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained quad. Rudy Martin Jr. was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. 

In Triple A this season, Bateman slashed .311/.429/.416 with 61 runs, three home runs, 33 knocked in, and 20 stolen bases. He adds more depth in the outfield and a left-handed bat off the bench. He could platoon in center field with Myles Straw, so he may not have to wait long to make his debut.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 20 | Run: 70 | Arm: 55 | Field: 65 | Overall: 40

Another 30,000 view.  If these scouting grades were true seems kind of under-rated.

Hit and Power are correlated I guess so the power could drag down the hit.  But if you took this literally and he is say a 50 hitter with patience, a 70 runner and a 65 fielder...  that is a starting center fielder.

(not arguing slider-guys points really, 20 power might mean he'll hit like Myles Straw, even with good contact, but then not a 50 hitter, the power drags down the hit, semantics I guess). 

Saw he was measured at 30.2 sprint speed last night.  Chandler is reportedly 29.5 or something.  Those measurements can be off I guess.  Doubt he's faster than Chandler.

Because I voted for DJT 3 times, and am hoping for a fourth opportunity**, my wife got me a blue sky account, hoping it would expose me to truths and fix this problem.  It hasn't so far, but I do get some baseball analysis that is not available on X or JC.  Blue Sky's lone baseball voice is excited about Batemen!

Yeah me too. I think the defense is likely plus so I'm most curious to see how the bat translates to the major leagues.

Aside from the plate discipline I don't think they share much in common. I'd wager Bateman has a better hit tool with Biggio having more power. Defensively they are worlds apart and that's also the case in the speed game.

A .300 hitting centerfield in triple A with speed, it sounds good for him

Look up Biggio's grades from back in 2016.  I think you will be surprised at his speed rating and hit tool.

I don't think the 2016 grades are relevant as he debuted in 2019. The 2019 Fangraphs report gave him a 40 present/future hit tool grade which is fair considering how he developed over time. Surprisingly Fangraphs gives Bateman a 35 hit tool grade presently with a future 55 rating. What was the source for the grades you were looking up?

Relevant is a different thing.  I was just pointing out that scouting grades are so dynamic when a player is young. Are they toolsy is sometimes very hard to quantify in baseball. It is why players continue to develop even a decade into the majors sometimes regressing (Vladdy?).  

I will pull up Biggios scouting report for you.

Biggio made large changes to his approach. He came up as a no power, contact/OBP guy, but after his first year or 2, he made swing changes and started to sell out for more power. It worked in the minors and early in his MLB career.  MLB deciding to phase out the juiced balls really hurt him, as he never had the raw power a lot of HRs became long flyouts.  He wasn't able to overcome that unfortunately.  Defense wasn't good enough to warrant anymore chances.  

Too bad. Liked him as a player. High baseball IQ player.

Impressive start to his MLB career. Good eye at plate, speed, good glove. Scouting reports had him no power. First at bat he hits one of top of wall in left. 

I always like speed in the outfield. Covers more ground defensively, causes havoc on base paths. Going first to third, advancing on tag ups, etc...

Kinda reminds me of the rays Simpson. Feel like he could create some major havoc on the base paths while playing fantastic defense

Early opinions from me are not great as far as the offense goes. 

Contact ability so far looks good but not elite. This probably isn't a Kwan, or even an Ernie Clement etc. contact profile. 
The AAA walks look like they came from being passive. That won't translate strongly. 
Demonstrated power is very low.  

He might be closer to a .245 hitter, with just an average walk rate, and almost no power

BTS mentioned it before but I think the absolute best thing you can hope for is Jacob Young, in other words the defense and baserunning NEED to be elite for him to be a starter otherwise it's a platoon piece

That's what I think he'll be, a platoon guy with Straw. Seems about right.
