I can make sense of it. People were saying Okamoto was a wasted contract just a couple weeks back… Always a general bias against the new guy if he struggles initially

I think one factor keeping him on the big league roster is the lack of an alternative right handed bat to take his place in a platoon role in the outfield. Stangstag 1

He needs reps against live pitching in Buffalo, right now he's been useless. Also, I'm talking about when moves need to be made.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Sosa doesn't have any options. So it makes sense he would stay over just straight up DFA if Schneider can simply be sent down. He would probably benefit from the reset at AAA. Because it helped him last year. Spanky__99 and RA Whiffleball 2

Way to tell us you didn't look at the defensive stats before posting this. Heineman is 81st percentile blocking this season and 91st percentile framing. Heineman isn't throwing well this season so at least you were 33% correct. He needs to get his bat going eventually if he wants to remain a Blue Jay but his defense is far from the issue you are falsely claiming it to be. Spanky__99 1

Valenzuela is better at most things and considering he's catching a lot of pitchers he's never caught before plus being a rookie its certainly unfolding out better in game as well. I will give you the blocking for sure but that also goes hand in hand with knowing your pitching staff. The point is Heinemen has been a straight up disaster when it comes to make any fielding or throw decisions whether its been fielding his own position or getting throws on the bag. I don't care if he doesn't have the arm strength to throw out runners. That is what it is at this point its how many he has air mailed or needlessly thrown that has led to runs. His metrics do look a lot better than what plays out in game though. But lets not forget Valenzuela is also an excellent framer. Spanky__99 1

Heineman grades out better at both framing and blocking than Valenzuela. The only real issue with his fielding is his throwing, and he's hovering around an even 0 runs by Statcast presently. There is a teamwork segment in the Statcast catcher stolen base metric and Heineman's teammates haven't been helping him out as this is at -1 runs presently. This all appears as though you are taking a few isolated plays and using the eye test as the metrics do nothing to paint the picture of Heineman being the hopeless defender you are trying to portray him as.

I won't disagree that the Jays pitchers in general don't hold base runners well. It's an ongoing problem. But he simply doesn't have the arm strength to compensate. I didn't portray him as hopeless. He's just not good enough of a Catcher to warrant him being rostered if he's going to OPS sub ,400. Once Kirk's back and Valenzuela is the backup who actually some pop, arm strength, and does most of the things Heineman does already the Blue Jays are a better Baseball team.
jmomcc Verified Member Posted May 4 Posted May 4 I quite like Sosa. I like having one guy who is a free swinger with pop. I love Schneider's game but if i'm choosing one to option, its him right now. With Heineman, it kind of depends how much you value him knowing the staff so well and what you think of whoever the current 4th guy on the chart is. I think i'd lead Heineman but i'm not sure its that easy a call.
RA Whiffleball Verified Member Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Losing a game when their ace has to leave in the first inning is so typical of this stop-start season. Now we head to the Graveyard for 3 against a Rays team that is cooking. Stangstag and Spanky__99 1 1

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Makes you appreciate how good Kirk really is behind the plate and the difference he makes day in and out. Even if his bat was off to a cold start, can't replace him behind the plate. Hopefully we get him back soon. Stangstag 1
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Schneider has options, so would send him down to Buffalo and keep Sosa around a bit longer. As for Heineman, he's been awful this season. He's also 35-years-old. We got a really good season out of him last year, though did we expect him to be worth 2.1 WAR again? I would keep Valenzuela around even when Kirk gets back and send Heineman to the moon. But yeah I understand if the Jays want Valenzuela to get AB's on a day-to-day basis in Buffalo and keeping around extra catching depth on the 40-man. I doubt a team claims Heineman, but not sure he would accept a minor league assignment in Buffalo after. Stangstag 1

I think Heineman has the next 3-4 weeks or so until Kirk is ready to come back to get his bat going a bit. He was the one hitter on the roster that I thought had essentially no chance to repeat his 2025 season with the bat as he outproduced his xwOBA by something like 70 points, but unless he's finished as a major leaguer his bat isn't likely to continue to be as bad as it has been. I don't know if the team will be ready to jettison Heineman as of yet as this would lead to a tenuous situation in terms of catcher depth where if Kirk were to get hurt this could lead to the team being forced to run 2 rookie catchers simultaneously. Valenzuela would likely be better served to be starting 4-5 times per week to continue honing his craft and serving as Kirk's backup would greatly reduce his available playing time.

Don’t see any reason for Valenzuela to not play, a young guy who does not require rest should be out there every game while Kirk is rehabbing. Heineman should be demoted as soon as Kirk is back Why didn't JS pinch hit for him in that situation? Taking him out of the game after that lame at bat doesn't really help us - that was bases loaded man, I don't want TH batting in that situation.

If you are going to leave a struggling hitter in the lineup in a bases loaded situation late in the game it's worthless to punish him afterwards when he didn't come through in the clutch.
