metafour Verified Member Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Meanwhile Pearson (the one trade I didn't like at the deadline) has pitched to a 1.86 ERA and 0.621 WHIP since getting traded. Pearson is getting hit just as hard as he was here. He has an absurd 21.7% IFFB rate with the Cubs (it was 13.3% prior to trade). He is posting a .152 BABIP. This is clearly just batted-ball luck in a small sample size.

Maybe, but his walk rate has also dropped significantly. It's likely he's actually making better pitches as well.
TimInBC Verified Member Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Shatkins has a lot of work to do in the offseason. . He's got a team full of guys who don't know how to win. Sorry, George S., even you now.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Green really stinks. 1st percentile on Avg EV contact given up. Rockets all day. 7.8 /9 K rate. FIP over 4.50 Hard hit and barrel rates off him cringe. Nobody wanted him much this past deadline, with the $10.5M AAV cost. Having said they we are stuck with him, and we'll need his arm in '25 with the amount of holes to fill in the pen.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 Who else should we use to pitch the 9th in close games? One of the lefties?

metafour Verified Member Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 Maybe, but his walk rate has also dropped significantly. It's likely he's actually making better pitches as well. His strikeout rate has also dropped significantly. His hard-hit % is up to a whopping 46.9%. His barrel % is up over 5% to 14.3%. So he is basically just throwing the ball in the zone (lower K rate, lower BB rate) and its getting hit hard. But the ball so far has been going right to defenders (.152 BABIP) or its being popped up at an unsustainable rate (automatic outs). Pitchers who give up a ton of hard contact don't carry an absurdly low BABIP. Its obviously a fluke. He is also carrying a 100% LOB% which also will normalize eventually.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 I recall one of the criticisms Yankees fans had with Green was he sucked in high leverage situations. I never looked at the numbers but I believe it. The f***? He was one of the best RP in baseball for years. He was their fireman.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 12, 2024 Posted September 12, 2024 (edited) The f***? He was one of the best RP in baseball for years. He was their fireman. Exactly. He was almost always used in high leverage. Boone used him every time he got nervous. Just not the 9th cause they had Chapman or Betances behind him. Edited September 12, 2024 by G-Snarls
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 The f***? He was one of the best RP in baseball for years. He was their fireman. He was elite/lights-out from ages 26 to 30 when used in high leverage like in the 7th or 8th. To expect that same level at ages 33 and 34 especially after a major injury, is like you expecting to have a date with Sydney Sweeney. Unrealistic expectations.

I'm not particularly worried about Green moving forward. He's not as good as the miniscule ERA he ran for most of the season would suggest given the reduced strikeout rate and substandard quality of contact allowed but he's nowhere near as bad as the recent struggles would suggest either. His stuff and command metrics are both very solid and I fully expect the recent struggles will be more of a speedbump than a sign of things to come.

Why are you turning my very straight forward comments that Green was a top notch fireman with the Yanks into something about his current contract. You did this in another thread too - are you trying to troll and bait me or some weird s***? That said - RPers don't necessarily follow the same curve as hitters do. Yates is 37, coming off like 82 injuries/surgeries. David Robertson was the OG Chad Green in NY and he's still going strong after a couple of down years/injuries in his mid 30's. RPs are always a bit of a crap shoot - a box of chocolates. Nothing wrong with adding Chad Green to this team and I certainly wouldn't write him off as being "done".

Jaysblue loves to say everyone is declining and sucks, what did you expect etc. If they ARE bad he gets to say "see I told you so!" If they end up having a good year he says "oh it was very lucky, we shouldn't be expecting that going forward"
