L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Gausman vs Feltner Feltner running a 16% swinging strike rate and a GB% >50%. He looks good early on Expecting a bounce back performance from Kevin. He is the ace. Let’s get it started in here!
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 This thread will be a legend. Starting a huge win streak while banned, L54 will never be forgotten
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Whew we get the road Rockies and first team on their trip. Only concern is Feltner might be good.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Bottom 5 of Biggio, Kirk, Varsho, IKF, and KK again. Ugh.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Getting to play the Rockies is pretty dope
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Praying 4 a good Gausman showing in the warm dome
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 The probables have been decent for the Rox, both Feltner and Hudson have started out strong, hopefully Birds take them to Poundtown!!

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Think I saw a stat somewhere that showed the Blue Jays are 5-0 when Schneider starts and 1-7 when he doesn't. Obviously I'm not going to give that much credit to Schneider, I think most of us would prefer to Varsho/KK split CF duties and be late inning pinch runner/defensive replacement until they can at least bat above .200.

When DS starts, they are 5-0 with a +16 run differential. I mean, it's a ridiculous sample size and means nothing, but regardless, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that DS should be starting everyday. Unfortunately, the Jays are paying $10.5m to KK, $15m over two years for IKF, and traded Moreno for Varsho, so DS is going to have to ride the pine until the team gets desperate (or injuries happen).

Do you really think this plays a big factor? I don't. I suspect their predictive models suggest this lineup still gives them the best chance to win, over one with DS in it. I'd love to know the truth!

I agree with you but I cannot stand that you need to double down/triple down on your previous stupid moves. IKF/Biggio have at least earned playing time but there is 0 reason why KK/Varsho both need to be in the lineup. This team isnt good enough to drop any wins even if it's in April. With the great starting pitching/bullpen we have, the difference in the entire game can be a single at bat and I'd rather see Schneider/Clement in there than either of those guys at the moment.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Do people even realize that our offense has been better than the pitching thus far? Weird is that, you don't hear a peep.

I think most people don't agree with whatever predictive models this franchise has been using the past few years. Players are human and not robots... there are going to be times when certain guys are hot/cold and you need to be able to adjust accordingly.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Do people even realize that our offense has been better than the pitching thus far? Weird is that, you don't hear a peep. Reality is that both have been subpar but with pitching, rotations are already set in stone for the most part so there's not much debate needed there. Offensively you're able to tweak/change things a lot more frequently to help improve. That's why you'll always hear more talk here, not to mention track record let's us assume our pitching will be good and the hitting will always be our weakness. My 2 cents.

I suspect their predictive models suggest this lineup still gives them the best chance to win, over one with DS in it. I'd love to know the truth! Honestly, if they were structuring the playing time around who makes the most, then I think that would be more reasonable than thinking IKF, KK, and Varsho (the Jays version) give them a better chance to win than DS. My only guess is that the Jays as an org aren't as high on DS as the projections are for whatever reason, which is fine, but if your alternatives are what they are, then you kinda have to give DS more burn. He's not being blocked by Semien and Teoscar. This is the 2024 Jays. There shouldn't be any barrier to playing time.
HomeRunHomer Verified Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Exactly. DS should be starting. KK and Varsho should rarely ever be in the starting lineup together.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 I think most people don't agree with whatever predictive models this franchise has been using the past few years. Players are human and not robots... there are going to be times when certain guys are hot/cold and you need to be able to adjust accordingly. If Managers were good with going with their gut and eyes - then nobody would have developed predictive models. The reality is Managers are often terrible at this and it can be very difficult to pull this off correctly. Here's an example. DS is off to a hot start and the Jays consider whether he should become a starter. The predictive model still suggests the Varsho and KK give them the best chance to win, but they decide to override the model and start DS regardless of the matchup. DS goes 0-12 in 3 straight starts, but that's a really small sample size, so do you continue to override the model and start DS? or do you go back to Varsho/KK? Hot and cold streaks come and go without any indication or warning. Do you keep going with your gut over the non-bias, statistical data? I fully expect the Jays predictive model suggests that starting DS in certainly matchups will yield the best results. And one could argue the model is working beautifully, as they are getting good production out of DS to date! You can suggest "most fans" don't agree with their predictive models - but what on earth is that based on? You don't even know what the models are based on or how accurate they've been. You're basing this on your eye test and the results? I mean my eye test showed me people were arguing Clement should start over IKF in the 2nd game vs. Seattle....yet IKF went 3-4. In fact, if left to the fans, Clement would have be starting over IKF almost every single day...yet here we are with IKF rocking a 131 wRC+ and Clement at 88. Fans were wrong all the time. Gut feelings are wrong all the time - hence why we use so much advanced statistics now.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 https://i.imgur.com/1IBrqCS.png[/img]"] Since the trade, Varsho has an 81 wRC+ and 2.0 WAR in 623 PA (167 G). Something is not right with him. It looks like he has options remaining so if it's possible to send him down then it's getting to the point where they should consider it. Fixing his bat is pretty important for the organization given he's controllable through 2026.

Why does everything have to go wrong for us on the offensive side.
