G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 This one hurts but at the same time 700m is insane. Yeah Surprisingly I'm not even mad Just worried about how we're going to fix the offense for 2024 without Ohtani or Soto
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 JP Hoornstra absolutely nuked his reputation lmao It's pretty easy to say that he chose the Jays but got a massive last minute offer, which does seem to be the case here.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Chapman (20M), Bellinger (25M), Teo (20M), Hicks (10M) We can legitimately get all those guys for 5M more than Ohtani who was only DHing for 2024. Let's see what Shatkins can do here... Chapman isn't worth 15
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Chapman isn't worth 15 Ohtani isn't worth 70M but when you're the top of your free agency class, s*** happens lol

Let's see what Shatkins can do here... The first three would be great but we shall see if the team has that type of overall money available with the "unicorn" budget that Ohtani would have reportedly opened up for them.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 What an fnnnn let down.. We lose Ohtani and Soto… Blue balled too!
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Chapman isn't worth 15 Come on man, the guy was a 3.5 win player and very well may have hit 4 wins had he not gotten hurt in August.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 f*** those guys and their BS reporting and f***ing Reddit threads!!
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 As we kinda all suspected from the start.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 It's possible he was right, and the Dodgers responded by making an offer no one could top. It seems odd they would table $700 million if Ohtani was always going to sign with them. Yeah seems like Dodgers initial offer was around 500 million, Jays “godfather” offer upped it to 600, and the Dodgers came back with 700. Jays would’ve probably needed to go up to 800 if they wanted Ohtani.

Let's see what Shatkins can do here... I think Chapman and Bellinger are going to be massive overpays and the value just isn't there. Bellinger was better last year but advanced stats suggest there was some luck in those numbers. JD Martinez is the first guy I sign. I'd bring Hicks back, but I think it will cost more. Teo might come at a reasonable price.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 On the other hand, it will be very nice to see Ohtani finally get some playoff glory. Really hope the Angels will move Trout while he’s still an elite bat
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 April 26 and 27 Dodgers are in town. Hope we don't boo Ohtani because it would make us look bush league and petty.

Sharks fans booed John Tavares lol. If San Jose hockey fans booed John Tavares for not signing with them, Ohtani will inevitably get booed.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 We dodged a bullet Absolutely this. There just has to be a point in an auction where you are willing to walk away. The Blue Jays simply don't have the established minor league talent pipeline at this point to continue to surround Ohtani with impact players if they were to outlay this type of cash.

I don't trust Bellinger long term and Chapman has shown to be too sporadic with the bat. Let's see what happens though.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Commissioner's office might have to step in and curb this nonsense.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Lol dude, the money was only there for Ohtani. It was a business decision to offer him 600 or whatever. Then I'm gonna go cry in the corner if we legitimately don't seriously improve this team

Delgalladay Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Oh well. We knew he wasn’t ever going to Toronto. Dodgers will regret that contract in a few years. Not sure what the Jays are going to do now. If their only move is re-signing Chapman then it’ll make it easy not to watch next year.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isn't that like cheating the system? Why is it even allowed?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Yeah seems like Dodgers initial offer was around 500 million, Jays “godfather” offer upped it to 600, and the Dodgers came back with 700. Jays would’ve probably needed to go up to 800 if they wanted Ohtani. I see the opposite. Toronto was his preferred destination, and the Dodgers had to pony up considerably more than the Jay's to get him.
philly30 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 We should just boo the Dodgers in general. Teams that try to buy championships are trash. Everyone that has the money to buy a Championship tries to, not like the Jays are bottom of the league in spending, it just matters where you put that money, look at Tampa
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isn't that like cheating the system? Why is it even allowed? Well they have made it so that the luxury tax hit is based on the AAV and not each year's actual salary But yeah, what about deferred post retirement payouts?
