jerb Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Jeff Passan @JeffPassan The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire left-handed starter Rich Hill and first baseman Ji-Man Choi from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Yeah that's the difference. Bassitt is getting over 60 million over 3 years while Gibson only signed for 1 year at 10 million. Jays payroll is going to be tight in 2024 and 2025. Heck when I suggested the team trade for Nolan Arenado, all I was hearing was that the Jays don't have the money or cap space available. That $40M in 2024 and 2025 on Bassitt could have been used much wiser. Again, Bassitt has been decent this season. He's not trash or garbage. Just a huge overpay IMO for a 35-year-old starter. I'm more worried about him in Year 2 and 3. Atkins has made fantastic FA signings though some have been head scratchers. Like Bassitt, Roark, Morales, and the Grichuk extension. For every Kyle Gibson who's having a good year and providing lots of value for $10M, there is a list of other starters who have been f***ing terrible for $8M-$15M AAV range, including: Andrew Heaney Sean Manaea Martín Pérez Corey Kluber Ross Stripling Matthew Boyd Noah Syndergaard Mike Clevinger Jordan Lyles Jameson Taillon Johnny Cueto Zack Greinke José Quintana To be perfectly honest - almost every FA starter has sucked a bag of dicks this year as you can add Rodon and DeGrom to that list. The FA pitchers having good years and providing value include: Kershaw Eflin Walker Eovaldi Gibson Senga Bassitt Smyly, Dick Mountain and Anderson are kinda of meh. Given the uncertainty of Berrios and Kikucci this year, the Jays couldn't afford to "miss". Did they pay more to get someone like Bassitt with a better history of consistency and durability? I would say yes they did - but thank god they did. Are the O's some brilliant organization because they "hit" on Gibson? I don't think so - I think there's a ton of luck involved as lots of good organizations "missed" on their SPing FA signings this past season. Christ, the Rangers "hit" really well with Eovaldi, but missed on Heaney, DeGrom and Perez. They'd be incredible if the signed Eflin, Senga and Gibson instead of those 3.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 So Bo is done for sure? My uneducated opinion is there's a good chance Bo is gone for at least a month, so DeJong makes a lot of sense. He's also a lefty killer, so he'd fill a role even if/when Bo returns.
bluejaysinternNo5 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 If the the choices are between DeJong and Anderson I would actually rather have DeJong. At least this way you get a defensive upgrade at shortstop.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 League average bat and good defence to ride it out until Bo returns sounds like a plan IF our other bats (u know who) show up.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 So Bo is done for sure? He'll no doubt miss some time. The question becomes how much though. I think if we acquire a SS it's more then a 10 day IL stint.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 So Bo is done for sure? Not necessarily, but an IL stint is a given. Good depth regardless.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Damn how reliable is Gomez? Reliable... they're talking about this right now on MLBN.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Bruce Levine @MLBBruceLevine Multiple front office sources confirm White Sox will trade anyone except Luis Robert. Eloy Jiménez would be an interesting acquisition.
Hawks Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I totally agree. Platoon Vladdy and Paul and trade Belt and say Pearson or Ryu to St Louis.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I totally agree. Platoon Vladdy and Paul and trade Belt and say Pearson or Ryu to St Louis. Hey new guy - stop trolling.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I totally agree. Platoon Vladdy and Paul and trade Belt and say Pearson or Ryu to St Louis. Why in the wide world of sports would St. Louis want Ryu, Belt and Pearson??
tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I think Bo will be out for the season...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 I totally agree. Platoon Vladdy and Paul and trade Belt and say Pearson or Ryu to St Louis. lol
tossingthiscoin Verified Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Damn... Due to Bo's injury, we had to trade DeJong...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 DeJong's a Jay, now one more Teo to pluck, Ross.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Wow. So Bo is 100% done for the year, pretty much confirmed. Nice to have someone like DeJong with some pedigree to replace him everyday in the lineup. Scared of what we gave up…
