WryNGinger Verified Member Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 That was some pure s*** from the home plate umpire tonight. Brutal calls way outside the strike zone against both teams. What a f***ing s*** show. Weird how young athletes in their prime can see and react better than older (is there an annual eye test performed each year on MLB umps?) umpires? At least in hockey the ref's and linesmen need to be able to keep up with the pace of play... Where is the proof to the teams and the public that some of these guys can even see or react well enough to call a 100 mph pitch close to the strike zone?

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 I hope this is the last year of rope they give Biggio. We need him to pick up his game offensively, he's been here long enough. We need to upgrade his role in the off season if he underperforms again this year. I think the club may need to look into upgrading Espinal if he doesn't pick up his game offensively. He's been flat out terrible for over half a season now. Dating back to June 16 of last season he's produced an absolutely awful 60 WRC+ and has only reached replacement level FWAR of 0.0 due to great defence.

Utility players can be added at the trade deadline. If the Jays need to upgrade on Espinal or Biggio, sure they easily will be able to. It's a weak market even at 2B for 2024 free agency. Actually pretty weak hitters market overall. Pitching market seems pretty decent though.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 Jays Moneyline today are +110. Against a 13-0 team with Berrios on the mound... i would have thoguht they'd be even higher.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Addison Barger. Based on his usage in Buffalo early on this year, one would not come to the conclusion that they are angling to have Barger take over at 2B. He's started four games at SS, three at 3B, two as DH and one in RF. Nearly everywhere but the keystone, although it's still early. Edit - actually no playing time at 2B at all last year either. None since his late season promotion to HiA in 2021. If he's going to play there in the bigs, they'd surely want to get him some reps.

Barger's best defensive tool is his arm, I dont think there's any plans to make him a 2b. Most of the reports I've read suggest he's more than capable of sticking at 3b, but SS is probably not the right fit. OF is also a possibility given how the Jays love having versatility these days.

I suspect he's the most likely candidate to take over 3rd base once Chapman inevitably leaves in free agency.

If he's playing SS, he'll be able to cover 2nd base with pretty limited work there. I know that may not be his long term home, but if Espy/Biggio/Merrifield continue to suck - we may need to turn to him there this year (before he takes over 3rd when Chapman leaves next year)

His current defensive skillset points to 3b or the OF (going by scouting reports of course)

I just suggested Barger as an internal option if it gets to the point that Espy/Biggio/Merrifield aren't cutting it at 2nd base. We aren't anywhere close to the point we're going to make the decision. Everyone SSS right now.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 Getting close to crunch time on getting a GDT up for today. All kinds of bad mojo if one doesnt go up before first pitch. Spanky was going to jump on the grenade, but its Friday so he might be in jail already. Omar was willing to give it a rip also.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
