John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 I definitely get the argument against Wells for the lack of playoff appearances or any kind of standout individual moment, but I think his overall numbers merit the Level of Excellence. I can’t hold it against him that he was offered a massive deal, or that none of the teams he played on made the playoffs when no single player is ever responsible for getting a team there, or winning if you get there. Playoffs and World Series are a team achievement, not a single player achievement. I guess my point is, if the guy who’s 2nd place on virtually every Jays all time stat for hitters can’t be on the Level of Excellence, that’s a pretty high bar. Nor am I saying to fly the doors open and let anyone with X number of “insert stats here” get in either.

I think I did this right - but his wRC+ with the Jays was 108, so personally, tarnishes most of the counting numbers. He just doesn't compare to guys like Jose and Carlos with the bat. He had a really nice run from 2003 to 2007.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 The cutoff seems to be roughly 30 fWAR. Bautista 36.2 Fernandez 35.1 Delgado 34.7 After that you've got Barfield at 29.6 and then Vernon at 24.8 On the pitching side it's Halladay at 48.6, Stieb at 43.6 and a huge drop-off to Key and Clancy at 28. The exception was obviously Alomar who didn't have the longevity but was the best player on our WS teams. Oh, and let's not forget Carter who comes in at #37 on the all-time Blue Jays list (position players) with a grand total of 7.4 fWAR.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 I get chills watching that, f***ing epic!!! Me too. I'm a huge Moneyball fan - watch it every time I see it on TV and the music for the Hatty HR is just incredible. This overlay with Jose's HR sends chills down my spine and makes me emotional. How can you not be romantic about baseball...
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 With the expected changes to the concourse I would like to see an activation inside the stadium for big moments or seasons (we could take Joe off the LOE and celebrate his HR instead). With a wall of all players to put on the uniform (coaches included). Then keep the LOE to players who truly deserve it

Joe doesn't really below on the LOE simply due to a historic home run.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 You mean THE Barry Davis, of Bolton Honda fame?
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 I support this. Joe doesn't really below on the LOE simply due to a historic home run. I believe in the Hall of Fame there are pictures of events with players that were not included in the Hall. Joe Carter's homerun is definitely LOE for Blue Jays history.

Joe Carter's homerun is definitely LOE for Blue Jays history. Why wouldn't the Blue Jays do the same thing? For me, the LOE is the Blue Jays HOF and Carter doesn't belong. Celebrate his historic HR in a more appropriate way. Leave the LOE for great players in team history.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Carter = Wells. When Carter was added to the LOE it was because he was the franchise leader or near the top for the stats that mattered at the time. 1st in HRs, 2nd in RBIs, 4th in Runs, 4th in PAs. Now that he's there we can't remove him. Let's not make the same mistake with Wells.
