That's why point - why wouldn't every signing happen like this then? This 'game' just doesn't happen. There's the chance he gets cold feet and backs out (bad for the team), or breaks his leg the next day and the team backs out (bad for the player). Jays won't freak out over losing Thomas Hatch or some s***** pitcher off the 40. There will be lots of 40 man casualties very soon and once Green is put on the DL, we'll grab someone who was dropped, but has a glimmer of hope to help us.

Even normal, every day, healthy FA signings usually take a week to 10 days to become official after they announce the "agreement to sign"

Most contracts have a window of time between an agreement in principle and execution. I can't imagine the Jays would do anything other than officially sign Green on the same day he can immediately go on the 60.

Clearly I'm not following the Countdown to ST thread close enough - I didn't realize we were this close to the start of camp (which I assume is the deadline for putting people on the DL???). Given how close we are yes, but under normal circumstances, no. Thomas Hatch survives another day!

So there's the answer

Deal was done

There was no option of "waiting it out" to avoid giving him a spot on the 40 man roster

Still think it was premature.

I don't know for sure but I don't think you can sign a player directly to the 60 man IL. I think they have to be on your 40 man roster first to be eligible for the 60.

So no, I don't think Toronto could have waited a couple weeks to make this official in order to avoid a DFA

The day Trent Thorton gets DFA'd is the day I'll say we're making real progress lol

I don't think that was ever a thing, but in theory 60 Day IL Ryu to add Green and then 60 Day IL Green then.

Tonic masculinity with a hint of rape culture. Disgusting. Figures it would get some likes from people like Jim.

Gotta agree with connor here (who I suspect may not be on the level with his comment) but that was a gross joke.

Matt Gage gets the DFA. Still think the move was a bit premature.

No one has the space to grab Gage right now. Same day as a more appealing Frank German is DFAd too. If you wait a week everyone gets to put their player on the 60 and claim your player.

Every thread connor participates in ends up this way

And then every thread becomes the Jim and Connor show. Looks like we are tied up in our draft so I will scrub the thread including your unnecessary commentary.

A team could always clear space and claim him.

At this point I think Thorton got serious dirt on Shatkins.

I like this deal. Lets hope he can make it back down the stretch healthy and give us the equivalent of a major trade deadline upgrade without having to move anyone.

Yeah it's like making a trade deadline deal but a couple of months earlier and it's only costing money. Plus the Jays can monitor his recovery during this time as well.

Maybe the opportunity to rehab at a world class training facility helped sway Green towards signing with the Jays a bit

Haven’t seen anyone post the contract deets yet, and boy its a doozie:

Under the incredibly creative contract, Green is guaranteed $2.25 million this year, after which the contract can extend in the following ways:

- First, the Blue Jays get a club option covering the 2024-26 seasons for $27 million over three years, with annual performance bonuses of up to $1 million based on games pitched;

- If the Blue Jays decline that option, Green gets a player option for the 2024 season worth $6.25 million with up to $2 million in bonuses based on games pitched;

- If Green declines that, the Blue Jays get a final $21-million, two-year club option covering 2024-25 with annual performance bonuses of up to $1 million based on games pitched.

In less than 2 weeks a team can use its 60 day dl.

and it's possible the team already has plans for the two spots or at least want them empty through Spring Training. Those NRI and Minor League deals like to know there is a spot if they shine in spring.

Also teams usually seem to know whether a player will get through waivers or not. I'm sure if it was as easy as not announcing the deal until they can put Ryu on the 60, they likely would.
