So I just finished watching the Mark Shapiro presser. One thing that stood out for me was when he said, "we lost because of a base running mistake". Didn't expect him to isolate Vladdy like that. Maybe change is afoot.https://www.mlb.com/video/live-blue-jays-press-conference-89368

 

I thought the same when he said it, directed straight at Vlad's camp.

If there's anyone I wanted Shatkins to throw under the bus it's him. Vlad deserves tire track markings (metaphorically by throwing him under the bus) more than anyone else in the org right now. It's great that Shapiro said it.

Didn’t care for Bo running through stop sign in Game 1 either, but it’s less egregious. It’s a shame the Berrios decision took away from 1 run in 18 innings produced and Vlad’s inexcusable f*** up.

Shapiro is so good

 

So very very good. He is so prepared to answer everything right off the cuff. Dude knows the Jays inside out, backwards and forwards.

 

Also, what a moronic question from the reporter asking him whether he’s watching Moreno in the playoffs. Laughably stupid question and he shamed her in the most likeable professional way possible.

 

Steve is also a moron. It’s not a reporters job to tell executives what the reporter personally believes about a specific move that was made. What a clown

Just finished the Shapiro press conference. I'm not sure there's anyone in the league better than him at his job.

Shapiro is a pro that's for sure, a professional speaker.

 

I watched it a second time, the question on Moreno from I think Rosie DiManno of the Toronto star - she couldn't even pronounce Moreno correctly ("Moreeeno") and then "Gabe".....Shapiro was like what.....I'm willing to be she doesn't really know alot about Moreno and read something about hte trade on twitter - or maybe on here.

 

....and her other questions were about "mistakes" were just awkward; ask your question but be specific and Shapiro will answer. How does she keep her job. I changed my mind on this part of the press conference after the rewatching it.

She came off like a whiney fan, such a bad look for a supposed professional. I really don’t think people understand how fast these executives have to move past trades, transactions, etc and focus their energy elsewhere. Shapiro couldn’t give 2 shits about whether any single player the team traded in the past 8 years makes the playoffs and goes further.

 

They may review process from time to time, but that’s about it. If the process continually results in terrible deals and acquisitions, they’ll review the process. Atkins process overall has been fine.

 

They don’t have time to worry about crap beyond their control. I guarantee Friedman and Zaidi don’t give a second thought to trading Yordan Alvarez before he ever played a single game in the minors

Asking Shapiro to comment on Atkins' mistakes was absurd for all the reasons you state, but also because she seemed to be talking about mistakes with MLB roster transactions, and Atkins has mostly avoided them in his tenure. His trades and especially FA signings have been very astute. Just an embarrassing question to ask.

Fake news. I actually watched it to see if it was like that. It was more about saying Berrios decision wasn’t the only reason they lost. They didn’t hit. The Vlad baserunning mistake was front page mlb too, so it was already recognized. He was just listing off reasons for the loss. Nothing nefarious

If you guys are done filatiating Shapiro. What does it say about their process that it took them 164 games to recognize there is an offensive problem and communication/informational flow issue and need the off season to deep dive and fix it.

 

The issue were very apparent by May. Nothing changed by July, nothing changed end of July, nor into October.

 

Failure to identify and process flows that fail to adapt accordingly. Successful companies are able to pivot or use the two way door approach to decision making.

 

Wasted season, wasted time in the window. hi

oh yea, 8 full seasons at that and now he needs to do a deep dive?

 

we're just commenting on how skillful he is navigating that press conference, alot of the questions were expected but still he managed it like a pro

I personally don't give 2 shits that Shapiro can talk well. The bottom line is that under his watch, he is endorsing a guy who has won 0 playoff games in 8 years in an expanded playoff era while having a bottom half farm system that isn't ready to fill in the gaps for a World Series contender.

 

This team will need to spend 250M if they want to plug their major holes, all while hoping their historic starting pitching health repeats. If we encounter a few injuries to the pitching staff, the drop off to the next guy at AAA is embarrassing.

 

To bring back Atkins shows me he is too comfortable in his role. I could care less about his renovations and the Florida complex, I mainly care about the product on the field. With bringing back Atkins, Shapiro needs to be fired immediately if we have another subpar year.

I will give him high marks for his handling of the media and the stadium renovations so far.

 

However, he is not a design architect nor the Media relations VP.

 

At the end of the day he needs to deliver a WS.

 

Going to be much harder next year. Where do you stop saying, ok, one more year…?
