GDT: Jays @ Phillies Big 2 game set... Lets Go Sweeping!!!

I was watching the game at the time and said the exact same thing. Everyone in the park knew a slider was coming

I get the thought process behind throwing sliders to Schwarber vs fastballs, but the sliders weren’t sharp and he missed badly with the first two. Then one in the zone gets fouled off, you can’t keep throwing it

John Schneider on whether something was going on health-wise with reliever Anthony Bass:

“No. We just liked (Adam) Cimber in that spot.”

His worst managed game easily, such bad decisions this game.

Bass was available and he didn't use him? Holy f***.

I own Bass in one of my fantasy leagues. Pissed he wasn't used tonight.

It's not even that. It was just obvious he was going to throw a slider there. Starting him with 2 sliders...fine. he does that alot. But when you're behind 2-0 and you throw a slider again and get it fouled off you may as well walk to the hitter and tell him you're about to throw another one. If you threw it 2-0 there's no reason for the hitter to expect anything else 2-1. It was Romano's call too he shook off the pitch comm to get the slider

Our lack of swing and miss stuff in the bullpen and poor fundamentals in key situations will kill us in the end. This team will make the playoffs but we're not deep enough or smart enough to go very far.

This is your patented reverse jinx, right?

Wow. That’s a Charlie quote right there. Not good. With the WC round coming up, decisions like that are kind of scary.

A bunt, an HBP, an intentional walk, and a little chopper that squeaks through a drawn in infield is hardly a reason to be concerned about a reliever.

Position an infielder a little differently and Cimber has a DP to end the inning. That's why they call it a game of inches.

Cimber has 3 HBP in September alone.

7.2 IP

5 K

3 HBP

2 BB

1 HR

FIP 5.46 xFIP 5.70

Obviously it's a small / meaningless sample size but he has not looked good this month.

Seems to have lost his release point or something. He's kind of all over the place.

But with the playoff race as boring as it is I guess you just keep throwing him out there, so he figures it out

Thanks for bringing the numbers to back up what I was saying. Cimber should not be used in high leverage over like 4-5 other guys in the pen. Seems like Bass is sick or something though.

Garcia dropped the ball big time last night, but even his outing had some bad luck with a weak grounder up the middle that Bo misplayed and double down the line landing just fair.

A lot of the Phillies baserunners late in the game were lucky

Even the winning hit was pathetic lol. It could have easily been a one hopper right to the pitcher, double play. Change the launch angle a tiny bit and that's the result.

I don't believe that 7 innings from a reliever really tells you anything. One (unintentional) walk and 5 K's is pretty normal for Cimber. Velocity and spin rates are pretty normal.

Obviously a home run in such small sample will really skew it, but the last HR before that was over a month ago. I'll buy that his mechanics look a bit off, but we're really making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Cimber didn't give up a single hard hit ball last night. Bass would have given up a run in the same circumstances (bunt and lucky weak hit single).

I didn't see the game, but was listening on the radio. Why did they move Merrifield back out to the OF (prior to the game winning hit) when they have the GB specialist on the mound? Not sure exactly where the ball snuck through or if it would have mattered if Whit was still on the infield, but it seemed like an odd decision after he was in there for the previous batter.

Edit - after writing this, I see Cimber's GB% is WAY down this year at 40% after it's been mid 50's for most of his career. Interesting.

Not sure if any of you noticed when the camera panned to Romano in the bullpen before he started warming up but he looked like s***.

It looked really hot. Pitchers on both sides seemed to be having trouble spinning their sliders

I think the idea was that they had the force play at home so it was more important to have 3 outfielders at that point…. But the ball was chopped so high that I don’t think anyone would have had it anyways.

Did you watch the game last night? Cimber had some bad luck sure, but he looked awful too. He couldn’t hit the zone to save his life. He would have walked in the winning run if the game went on.

I watched the game and he had control issues for sure.

I just think the conclusion that he should be removed from his role due to that game or a mediocre (but not terrible) 7 inning sample is jumping the gun a bit. He's been no worse than Garcia or Romano recently.
