This is the same team that most of the major prognosticators labelled as a legitimate world series contender in the offseason. There have been serious underperformance and injury issues which have largely sunk the pen up to this point. The trade deadline has not passed yet, and there will be ample opportunity to bring in much needed help. This same general manager assembled a team which may have been baseball's best team in the second half of 2021, but unfortunately just missed the post season. There are 3 months left to this season, so maybe we can let things play out before labelling the general manager as a "clown".

That's fine but at least those GMs had the pecking order of those arms in correct order. In what world does starting Hatch over Castillo make any sense?

 

I can think of various reasons, and I'm sure Atkins and Co. based the decision on way more information we have.

 

Ultimately, the difference in win probability between Castillo starting or Hatch starting is probably so small that there is more value having Castillo available out of the bullpen for the next 5 games.

And so he was. So there are other reasons. In any event 8.1 innings of MLB service by Castillo, where he enjoyed a .211 BABIP, is pretty meaningless. He's projected to be a replacement level reliever.

 

In other words, like Goins, he's not worth arguing over.

There's plenty of reasons for this, the offence and starting staff was s*** in the early going and the team was largely kept afloat by a stellar performance by the pen. The pen started to suffer from injuries and tanked soon afterwards as the remaining dependable options were overworked. The sudden in season sticky stuff ban made the club's primary setup man completely ineffective from that point forward. It would have been nice to see some help brought in a little sooner, but aside from massively overpaying it didn't seem like there were trades to be made early in June or so when the pen became an issue.

 

There's also the not so insignificant fact that for the first 4 months of the season the team basically played as the road team in their "home" games and faced hostile crowds, while also facing the prospect of moving in season several times. This team faced far more adversity than any other team due to the covid pandemic. It's unfortunate that they missed the post season by a single game, but given that they played in a murder's row division where there were 4 teams that won over 90 games I'll give the GM a bit of a pass.

Yeah, I think I'd take Castillo's recent 4 innings of 1 hit 0 runs 1 BB with 7 K's vs the Brewers as a more reliable barometer than what Hatch has done in AAA this year in deciding who should have started vs the Rays.

The bullpen as assembled to start the season in 2021 seemed like it was just fine. More AAA depth would have been nice, as is the case this season as well, but to suggest that the general manager should be axed because of bullpen injuries and previously effective relievers becoming ineffective out of the blue seems like a bit of a stretch. Do you think it's fair or reasonable to blame Ross Atkins for the sticky stuff ban rendering several of his bullpen members to be completely ineffective?

I do not mind the load management they are doing for Springer. He is en route to have the 2nd most PAs this year in his career.

He is an injury risk and I appreciate they are making sure he stays healthy for the entire season.

Unfortunately, Vlad is also suffering from a nagging wrist issue and so he needs regular DH time until it heals up.

 

And the only other true DH candidates have been Gurriel (who has been injured quite a bit - shins from foul balls, hit on the hand twice) and Teo (who could be nursing his oblique still - he finally got more aggressive when fielding), and remember Kirk got pretty banged up over the last few weeks - hit like three times (two times on the hand) + the bat backswing hitting him on the hand during the Brewers game.

 

If this wasn't a thing, I presume Kirk sees more DH time whenever he isn't catching.

They are trying to keep the lineup healthy, and that's okay in my books, and probably a very smart decision for 162 games + postseason.

 

The decision really comes down to whether Kirk should DH over the others and they just take a full rest day instead of DHing, and Kirk takes a day of rest amid 2 games of catching and 2 games of DH. Shrugs, they have better data on that than we'll ever have.

It's not just about the 4 innings or whatever, Castillo has 60+ innings this season at AA, AAA and MLB and has out performed Hatch by a wide margin in every aspect.

 

Starting Hatch yesterday was baffling to say the least, and the results were not surprising.

I get it but if it was a normal 3-day series instead of a 5-game series in 4 days, it'd've probably been different.

 

Like Kirk was played in 2 of the 3 games against the Sox, so they definitely know his value against division rivals.

Kirk DH'd 1 game, caught 2 games against the Rays, they are probably resting him so he's ready to catch Manoah tomorrow.

 

Every time it feels bad, just remember that they did the exact same thing with Kawhi and he carried us to the trophy by being available for every single postseason game

The Jays want to give DH days to Springer, Vlad, Hernandez, and Gurriel every week. With Springer it’s understandable but they use the other guys as if they are in their 30’s. Again, broken record, but if this is the way they want to use DH then it’s bordering irresponsible to hoard all the catchers when it’s leading to 500 Tapia plate appearances. Just trade Moreno for Bryan Reynolds or something and fix this s***.

Your position is no different than complaining about Tapia sitting after going 3/4 with a homer the game before.

 

Again, Castillo is a replacement level player. The difference in win probability between Castillo starting and Hatch starting is negligible.
