Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 (edited) The fact that unvaccinated players will be unable to play in Canada this year is a fascinating story to follow, especially for Blue Jays fans. I think it's worthwhile to have a thread dedicated to discussing who those players are and what the implications are for our season. Are there any on the Blue Jays right now? We would certainly have to trade them and avoid any free agents who didn't get the jab. We know that at least 15% of the red sox 2021 roster was unvaccinated, most notably Chris Sale. Six other teams are in the same boat, including the Phillies, who at one time were around 50% unvaccinated. Please don't make this a discussion about vaccines in general. It is what it is and we should discuss the implications from a purely baseball standpoint. The list: Boston Chris Sale Tanner Houck Kutter Crawford New York (A) Andrew Benintendi Chicago (N) Jason Heyward Andrelton Simmons Philadelphia JT Realmuto Aaron Nola Alec Bohm Connor Brogdon Bailey Falter Kyle Gibson Oakland Austin Allen Kirby Snead AJ Puk St. Louis Austin Romine Nolan Arenado Paul Goldschmidt Detroit Andrew Chafin Cincinnati Brandon Drury Tyler Mahle Albert Almora Joel Kuhnel Seattle Drew Steckenrider Robbie Ray Edited July 30, 2022 by Grant77

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Author Posted March 11, 2022 Has mlb revealed their Covid policy. Hopefully it’s more in line with what the other major leagues have done recently I haven't seen one yet As a side note, I did see in my information gathering that Kris Bryant is vaccinated. That's notable, as he is a player of interest in the coming days.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Maybe I’ll leak on Twitter that Bryant pulled an Antonio Brown

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 Missing JD Martinez in your list. Also Andrelton Simmons. Possibles: Aaron Judge Robbie Ray Bryce Harper
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2022 Author Posted March 11, 2022 Missing JD Martinez in your list. Also Andrelton Simmons. Possibles: Aaron Judge Robbie Ray Bryce Harper JD Martinez didn't confirm that from what I have read, but if you have a link to a more definitive answer then I will update the list. We will find out for sure when each team plays here.

Refusing to answer yes or no pretty much confirms the answer as a "no", but yeah we can wait to add him to the list until we have a definitive answer.
Dah Dugout Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 I wonder how the Canadian rules affect the Jays with FA and trade partners?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Canada should scrap all these stupid rules anyways. It's ridiculous.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Author Posted March 12, 2022 I wonder how the Canadian rules affect the Jays with FA and trade partners? Well obviously we can't sign or trade for anyone who isn't vaccinated. That's 12% of players according to Shi Davidi, so a pretty significant amount. I wouldn't expect the government to drop this mandate anytime soon, given the tremendous amount of political capital they used to fight against truckers.

Most of the provinces across the country are dropping restrictions and mandates. Unvaccinated workers and fans can be in the ballpark, though unvaccinated athletes can't play? Most countries around the world now are scrapping restrictions and mandates as well. I don't expect this Federal Government to drop these stupid mandates anytime soon like you said, even when the science shows theses mandates really don't do anything to stop virus transmission. If I was an American player, better off signing with a team in the States anyways. Lower taxes, better weather, cities, ballparks and easier to travel domestically instead of crossing a border ever 10-12 days.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Canada should scrap all these stupid rules anyways. It's ridiculous. We should, but from a purely baseball perspective if we have all our guys vaccinated the stupid rules give us a fairly substantial competitive advantage.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 We are getting perilously close to making this thread overtly political. I will leave the current "political" posts for now, but any more opinions on the validity of the mandate will be removed, and the person making the post will be deemed very naughty. This is NOT a place to discuss your feelings about mandates, vaccines, or Covid. Consider this a final warning.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Ignoring my political opinions about this, an unvaccinated person from Toronto visiting a venue in Toronto is different than an unvaccinated person from a foreign country crossing the Canadian border. It opens an entire can of worms over who gets special privileges and who does not. That's why the difference. Also, as a Jays fan, we should want as many restrictions as possible for opposing players
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 What are the rules for unvaccinated Canadians returning to Canada? If we signed an unvaccinated Canadian the country has to let them back into their own country. Would they have to quarantine thus making it unfeasible?

I think your last sentence answers your question. They wouldn't make it easy for an unvaccinated Canadian to play here, not that there are many or any available.

If we signed an unvaccinated Canadian the country has to let them back into their own country. Would they have to quarantine thus making it unfeasible? Last time I went to the states, I had to show the border agent proof of vaccination or face quarantine when I came back. She also got very mad that I didn't download some stupid f***ing app on my phone, and said that could also lead to quarantine. I doubt there would be exceptions for athletes. On top of that, even if you have all your s*** in order, they can just "randomly" select people to sumbit a test during which time you are to isolate until receiving the results. I was one but I didn't bother doing it and nothing happened, so take that how you will. I do believe the border rules got more strict a couple days after my trip, though. I don’t buy it. If you were vaxxed you’d have no problem saying yes Well I am and I told my workplace it was none of their f***ing business so I have to submit tests twice a week. Doubt I'm the only one.

Red Sox would be missing many more players.
