Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Whole team has excellent chemistry. From an outside observer, they all seem to really enjoy being around each other.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Waiting to see this structure but hoping it is front loaded which could be the reason for the opt out after 5years
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 This is a decent deal. Was about to comment about the Matz QO for context but people already beat me to the punch. But if you look at it in the context of the Rodriguez deal, it's not too out of line. 5/77 versus 7/131 for a similar aged but superior pitcher. I think people are coming off of the sticker shock from Bauer and Cole and are thus judging the signing as a better deal for the Jays than it really is. Those teams just overpaid for top tier talent. One step down from top tier and I think the Jays and Tigers have judged the market about right. Probably made the market for pitchers this year.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Back end loaded from "a source" Why would they do that? I would think only if also planning to add some short term FA contracts
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 The one guy that noticeably doesn't join in the rah rah is Biggio. Probably just a reserved guy I guess. Well he struggled massively last year so he probably wasn’t too happy most of the time
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Why would they do that? I would think only if also planning to add some short term FA contracts Make it a tough decision to opt out if he is still performing well?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 So we can spend more $ now when all our kids are on cheap deals. Who gives a s*** about payroll space in 7 years, who knows what we'll be at. Yeah all our young guys are headed to super 2 status and big arbitrations raises. Going to get expensive eventually.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Yeah all our young guys are headed to super 2 status and big arbitrations raises. Going to get expensive eventually. Yeah, but at some point, there will be some trades made. No way to keep that kind of core together over the extended long term. LIke, Teoscar is likely looking at either being dealt in the next 1 or 2 offseasons without an extension. 10M for next year, Arb 3 for 2023. Depending on his season this year I would view him as a prime trade candidate to free up the dollars needed to keep up with Vlad and Bo's increasing monetary needs. Ditto Gurriel. On the plus side, Ryu's 20 million is off the books after 2023 as well.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 Grichuk too Also a plus. What a really big plus would be from him is having an actual decent year so he might be worth something in trade, but it really looks like he's a sunk cost at this point. Clearly, the team's core for the foreseeable future is Berrios, Springer, Vlad and Bo. Berrios and Springer are known costs, Vlad and Bo not so much yet, but they are certainly trending in the expensive direction. Short of some team friendly extensions for both of them, something will have to give in order to keep the dollars manageable. It would be nice to see Moreno step in as a core piece soon as he's still cheap for along time (possible CBA changes notwithstanding). Biggio has a chance to be a core guy also, but he's not trending in that same expensive direction as Bo and Vlad so far.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 are we forgetting Manoah?
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Author Posted November 17, 2021 Why would they do that? I would think only if also planning to add some short term FA contracts Actually makes a ton of sense to back-load a contract. A lot easier to build future rosters around payroll you already know about rather than squeeze large numbers into much tighter payrolls in the near future. A back-loaded deal gives them time to get contracts like Ryu and Grichuk off the books while still being able to fill the roster in with depth players they need right now.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2021 Posted November 17, 2021 are we forgetting Manoah? No, he's still cheap for the next 4 years at least. His arb 1 wouldn't even be until 2024 or 2025 at this point. Or do you mean forgetting about him as a core piece?

Back loading the deal allows the team to add more expensive deals in the front part of the deal while making it a harder decision for Berrios when the time comes to decide on the opt out.

I'm sold. Makes all kinds of sense. Wonder how soon the details get announced.

InsideThePark Verified Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Not sure I'd want either front or back loaded TBH. Back loading really ties up the end years, while front loaded causes issues now and if he opts out we lose out on the cheaper years. I'd be most happy with 11 this year then and even 20 for the other 6 years
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Yes. Too early? As of this moment, I would say yes, it's a bit premature. If he repeats last season this season... hard to say no. I'd say he's in the pool of players that have the potential to be core pieces in the next few years. Kirk, Jansen, Biggio, Manoah and then Moreno are probably all in that pool for me. Pearson also but to a lesser extent, he's more of a fringe core guy. Romano would be too if I didn't have an irrational hatred of relievers in general
jerb Verified Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Toronto Blue Jays @BlueJays OFFICIAL: We've agreed to terms with RHP José Berríos on a 7-year contract extension. The best is yet to come, @JOLaMaKina!
jerb Verified Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 (edited) Hazel Mae @thehazelmae #BlueJays will hold press conference at Rogers Centre in Toronto to officially announce Jose Berrios 7-year, $131 contract extension. Berrios and GM Ross Atkins will be in attendance. Hazel Mae @thehazelmae 1230pm This afternoon. Edited November 18, 2021 by jerb
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2021 Posted November 18, 2021 Let's not overlook the fact that future money is less expensive than present money. If the last few years of Berrios' contract are ~$25M, that likely has about the same impact on the bottom line as $20M does in 2022 dollars.
