JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 we win tomorrow and that's 7 of the last 8. How could anyone not like the trajectory of this team? This team looks unstoppable to me. They were almost just stopped with an 8 run lead lol
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Man I thought we were over the shaky bullpen ********.... this game did not instill confidence for the upcoming Redsox series. Hope we continue to score a shitload of runs
vaff Verified Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 I guess with the slider being bad guys can just sit fastball, and adjust to murder cement mixer sliders if they see them? He’s one of the only guys on the team that had a sudden mid season spin rate decline, for some reason…
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 They were almost just stopped with an 8 run lead lol At no point did I think we were going to lose this game. When you're up 8 you use your low leverage guys. Saucedo gave up runs. Romano got touched up for a couple long ones. It happens. Romano also struck out 3 batters.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 He looks much worse this year. Very inconsistent with the breaker and his fastball seems a bit weaker To me it looks mostly like a command issue, he wastes a lot of pitches early in the count then either blows the guy away or gives up a bomb. Lately hes been bleeding runs but tonight seemed like an anomaly, hes still a goodish RP with upside. He also almost never pitches which I feel like isn't helping.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Why is McGuire starting so much over Kirk?
vaff Verified Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Why is McGuire starting so much over Kirk? Tonight it was probably because of the massive lefty/righty splits of the Cleveland starter.

His overall numbers are still good, just not as dominant as 2020. Maybe 2020 was a bit lucky.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 (edited) Is that true? His spin rate on the season isn't down vs 2020. It looks like Romano's spin rates jumped a good deal early in the season compared to previous years, and have trended downwards as the season went on. I surmise that Romano may have been introduced to sticky stuff by a certain teammate that was signed in the offseason and ended up being recently released. Edited August 5, 2021 by max silver
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Interesting. It looks like a spin rate decline happened in the middle of this year, but his current rates aren't much different from 2020. Although if you look at the lower end of his current spin rates they are lower than 2020, particularly if you ignore the first couple of games in 2020.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 If we do make a wildcard game and it goes to the pen I will surely have a coronary incident. Ryu/Berrios/Ray will be the starter going 7 innings. Manoah will close it out. Any other scenario likely means the Jays got bombed anyways. I expect once this 6 pitcher rotation nonsense ends, Manoah will go to the pen to save innings and to stabilize it. At least that's what I hope will happen. People keep mentioning Pearson like he will be a saviour. Dude has barely pitched at the MLB level and so far he has sucked at it. I know small sample size but when fighting for the playoff lives you can't just assume success on that.
Signal Verified Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 And who said the Jays could not win a close game.

Possibly it is Nate. Hell, if I were the manager, right now, Mayza would be the closer. I think he and Cimber have looked good lately. Hell, by the time the playoffs come around who knows, maybe Dolis is that guy. With this particular bullpen, I think the approach has to be that you ride with the horses that are pitching the best at the time. The bullpen carried the team at the beginning of the year and hopefully, who knows, just maybe, they may come around again in September. Right now it looks bleak. But baseball is a weird game. And the Jays do not have that genuine closer, so I think they have to approach it differently, they have to ride who ever is pitching really well at the time. And to say it with any certainty now, is to damn difficult with this bunch of guys. Working this bullpen down the stretch and into the playoffs will take some savvy decision making by the manager. Hope he is up to it.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Why is McGuire starting so much over Kirk? I imagine they're also keeping things in line to deal with double-header workloads. Since two straight McGuire starts, I'd guess the next five games go: Kirk today McGuire Fri Kirk Sat g1 McGuire Sat g2 Kirk Sun Then Monday is an off-day followed by a double header again during a week-long West Coast roadtrip. Who knows what the plan is from there. Probably L/R match-ups. Seems like they're doing a pretty good job managing the C position tbh.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 We need to develop some knuckleballers. Then spin rate won't be an issue
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 We need to develop some knuckleballers. Then spin rate won't be an issue I don't know. I'd say a spin rate with a knuckleballer is very much an issue.

More likley Stripling or Matz goes to the pen or they keep the 6 man rotation going as long as its working
