Whichever Mod locked the HR jacket thread... kindly eat a bag of dicks.

I'm waiting for the HR Jacket is cringey 2.0 thread by some brave soul.

I didn't realize how s***** Ohtani has been with the stick recently

Ohtani has hit only .191/.331/.376 with seven home runs over his last 172 PA

With 20 games left? I'm sure Ohtani has done enough on the mound, plus what he's done at the plate, to have locked it up.

That said, there's always a chance.

There's always recency bias. If Vlad goes on a tear to finish the season and Ohtani continues to struggle, that would turn some votes.

If Vlad rakes the rest of the way and Jays make the post seaosn, and if Ohtani doesn't play or hits poorly from here on out and the Angels tank then Vlad definitely *could* win it

I really think Vlad needs that meaningless triple Crown to take it from Ohtani. Ohtani's true value in allowing an extra roster spot to be filled cannot be understated, not to mention he's really really good at baseball.

Possibly. There are some old school voters who would feel forced to vote for Vlad if he won the triple crown just like the last year Miggy won it. Those same voters might also be swayed by the team making the post season vs not argument as well so... let's make the post season please :)

The other good thing is Vlad also leads the AL in wRC+, wOBA and position player WAR to tempt the more modern minded voter

I'd take a World Series appearance over individual awards any day, but I have to admit it would be pretty cool having the AL MVP and Cy Young winner both be Blue Jays

Yeah for sure. Would be a dubious honour to have the MVP and the Cy Young and not at least make a deep playoff run.

Charlie is going to continue to play Dickerson out of position to get hit .707 OPS into the lineup everyday. Or you could play Grichuk who is the vastly superior defender and has been hot this month.

Cannot stand this move when Grichuk is showing signs of turning it around. Then you add that he's clearly a superior defender to Dickerson who has no business playing CF. Worst part is that Dickerson has been batting ahead of Gurriel too.

Grichuk is hitless since Monday. Relax plebs.

He played 1 game since Monday lol. I personally care more about the defensive upgrade but the intrigue of Hot Girchuk returning is great as well.

Hot, sexy Grichuk. Just watch his buns roll down the line after he grounds out weakly.

Ohtani is 2.7 fWAR from pitching right now, 4.6 from hitting. Vlad at 6.5 fWAR, obviously all from hitting.

so 7.3 to 6.5 for now.

Vlad beats Ohtani in all offensive categories that really matter, though of course HRs are quite close and will likely finish very close. If Ohtani is indeed shut down from pitching for the rest of the year (and ffs if he's got elbow soreness, yes shut him down without a second thought, why risk it in meaningless games?) their value at the end of the season overall will likely be extremely close, close enough that voters will be left with essentially only 1 consideration... is Vlad being a superior hitter enough to overcome the pitching/hitting unicorn narrative?

The only way I see Vlad winning is if he goes full beast mode to finish the season, gets the triple crown, Jays get in the Wildcard, and Ohtani shits the bed hard with the bat. The unicorn factor will be too hard to ignore otherwise.

Side note, Vlad might not just win the triple crown in the AL , but all of baseball if he beats Marte in batting average. All the HR and RBI leaders are AL guys so he could be triple crown of the entire league, not just the AL.

Only 5 players have ever done that, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig. That would be pretty unicorn-ish also

Springer and Dickerson both have strong numbers against Pineda. That's 100% what's happening here.

And 2) Did he lead Jays to playoffs?

Phew...

Its cute that Keegan thinks that move is for Manoah to get extra rest.

I actually love that we get to split up Berrios and Manoah with our lefties. Gives the other teams a different look on each day without them getting comfortable since Manoah/Berrios have some similarities being righties with a nasty slider.

Serious question

If the Jays started a best of 5 series next week would you use Ryu in the first 3 games?

Or would you try to get by with Ray Manoah Berrios and see where you are after that?

Ryu isn't himself right now

I don’t think Ryu is going to get a playoff start unless he really turns it around in his next 2 outings. It will really depend how the final games of the season go. If we need Ray or Berriors for Game 162, Game 163 just to get into the playoffs they have to be used. Best case scenario we don’t need to play those types of games. Just have Ray for the Wild Card Game. And Berriors to start Game 1 of the ALDS.
