jerb Verified Member Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Scott Mitchell @ScottyMitchTSN Free agent reliever Kirby Yates is firmly on #BlueJays radar, per source. Yates, who had surgery on right elbow in August to remove bone chips, is expected to be in Dunedin today and I’m told he’s not just “visiting.”

No sense at even looking at his (admittedly disastrous) 2020 numbers, since, y'know, 4.1 innings does not a worthwhile sample size make.

Get it done!
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Yates would be Grate. The pen would be essentially done: Romano Merryweather Yates Dolis Chatwood Borucki Stripling? Mayza/Hatch/Kay/Gooch/Cole/Thornton/Murphy/SRF/Perez

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 cool. BP needed a bump. Hopefully the deal is a good one. At 33-34 I can't see it being a disasterous term or anything.

BTS Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this. Yates was never right physically last year, but if he's healthy he can be the best reliever in baseball.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 The Jays having an open closer role is going to be appealing for established relievers coming off injury or down seasons. Yates would be a great add if he's healthy.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 " Following a strong first season in San Diego in 2017, Yates added a splitter to his arsenal and saw his career take off; in 2018-19, Yates led all qualified relievers with a 1.67 ERA and ranked third with a 2.14 SIERA over the life of 123 2/3 innings. Along the way, he struck out a whopping 38.7 percent of the hitters he faced, while walking just 6.1 percent of opponents. Among qualified MLB relievers, only Josh Hader and Edwin Diaz topped him in terms of K-BB% during that time." Drool worthy

BTS Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 (edited) I'm now committed to the idea of signing Yates, and will be very disappointed if it does not happen. Edited January 19, 2021 by BTS
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Yeah Those two tweets although sort of saying the same thing have a very different feel of how likely this signing is to happen
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Hearing Yates to the Jays for 2 years, $10m (from the Twitters)
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 If Yates does sign, we have probably 6 bullpen spots all but locked in if everyone is healthy: Yates ® Romano ® Dolis ® Chatwood ® Borucki (L) Merryweather ® Has the makings of a pretty decent pen, and with no financial commitments beyond 2021.

Not bad. I'd like to see another lefty in there if possible.

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
