Laika Community Moderator Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 Honestly, good for him. That's a big improvement. He's probably as fit as, say, Pete Alonso now.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 Still doughy as f***, but definitely a lot slimmer than before.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 It's a carrot and stick thing to get him in shape. "get in shape, fatty" is less motivating than "get in shape and we might let you play your preferred position again, fatty" "Unless we trade for Arenado in which case forget about it"

Kid's never lifted a weight in his life, he's got next to no muscle. His natural talent has always carried him. It'll take 5 years of legitimate training for him to actually build any substantial muscle and lose the dough, but he's at least starting the journey. This is definitely an improvement and a step in the right direction.

One of the best prospects of all time who's put little to no extra effort to get to this point. I don't know if this is true, but you'd have to think that gives him a much higher ceiling v. the kid who's been weight lifting since he was a tween and already had his body is premium condition as he ascends up the ranks.

That's not correct, he used free-weights and the DR training regimen, flipping tractor tires and all that... he just never used the elite equipment in the gym, he was confused by the question as they were in the gym, and upset following the article. Vlad haters want to run with the BS, though.

Vlad haters want to run with the BS, though. I don't know man - it's pretty obvious he hasn't been on any sort of strict workout routine in his life. He's built like a milk bag. Vlad can tell you about that time he flipped a tire or did a couple of curls, but it's pretty obvious he underestimated the effort required to maintain the body of a professional athlete. Hopefully he's learned his lesson and has adjusted his lifestyle to sustain some long term improvements.

I am a huge Vlad fan and want him to succeed.

Fair enough fellas, he obviously didn't take it serious after '18, he's always been naturally big as that pic I shared shows, no weights and training c'mon... I get your points, lets hope he continues to work through his career.

You can show me any picture you want - this isn't a kid who's worked out a lot in his career. If he does, and builds muscle, there's a chance he realizes even more potential IMO (v. a top prospect who is already chiseled like Yasiel Puig)

I know he’s a rich kid but baseball is big business in the DR and I’m sure they’re lifting at least by 13-14. Most travel teams in the states start incorporating/encouraging weights by then. You can’t always tell if someone lifts at first glance. There’s a lot of soft-looking NFL lineman at first glance and I’m sure they lift weights regularly. All we know is Vlad is just now getting to be more serious about a body transformation, rather than just going through the motions. It’s really good news

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 Exactly, I'm pumped. I'm very excited to see what an actual in shape Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is capable of on a baseball diamond. He's been a soft out of shape kid who never lost his baby fat, for once a "best shape of his life" story will be 100% true.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2020 Posted November 26, 2020 A light bulb had to go off in Vlad's head about his conditioning for him to take it seriously (short and long term), and I think the Spring Training 2.0 where he came in looking like Sandoval and had to move off 3B because of it might have been that moment. Hopefully this is a long term change for him. He could prolong his career and his prime by taking his weight/conditioning seriously. Good to see so far.

Well hes said as much in interviews lol. he was embarrassed by the shape he came into summer camp and apologized to his teammates. he pretty much immediately started to rectify the problem and started to lose weight starting from the end of july.

That was the moment, an when the Jays assigned him a nutritionous and personnel trainer when he approached them for help. Not many kids his age would do that, it's both good for Toronto and himself, I like it. They're with him in Dunedin.

If he was trying to lose weight during the season, and he did, noticeably, that may have had an impact on his performance. I'm expecting great things from Vlad in 2021 if he comes to camp in good shape.

He wasn't going to develop that work ethic out of the blue. It had to come out of failure and self reflection. So in a way, showing up to post pandemic camp embarrassingly out of shape and having a disappointing 2nd season might have been a blessing if it motivated him to change. It's one thing to say he was embarrassed, it's another to put in the work, and he's clearly doing the latter, which is a great sign. We'll see what he looks like on Opening Day. He's never going to look like Mike Trout, but he doesn't have to. Just be in solid baseball shape where mobility and conditioning is not an issue, and he should be fine.

Most are dedicated to their career. Most wouldn’t let themselves show up to camp fifty pounds overweight. Vlad did whatever he wanted because he knew they were never going to send him down. He’s a competitor and it took him failing horribly to realize he needed to make a change.

And the best part of it all is that him failing horribly was resulting him in being just a average league hitter at 21 yo. Sky is the potential
