BTS Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I don't really see how/why the team would want to carry him and Tellez.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Shaw on the out and Vlad back to 3B?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 was hoping for Boegarts....got Vogelbach..lol
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I don't really see how/why the team would want to carry him and Tellez. Right? Unless Tellez is on his way out?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Are you guys serious? We just got Vogelbach for CASH and nobody is happy? He has one of the lowest O-Swing and highest BB% in baseball on the tier of Cavan Biggio, with 60-grade raw power (avg exit velo 88.9 MPH, max 113.1 MPH) T-Mobile Park has not been kind to him, he had a 117 wRC+ on the road last season and 126 wRC+ against RHP. This is a massive upgrade over our bench fodder. He's also an average to slight below average 1st baseman, can't say the same yet about our other two. Edited August 24, 2020 by BlueRocky
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Are you guys serious? We just got Vogelbach for CASH and nobody is happy? We have like 15 people who can play 1B now lol
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Shaw on the out and Vlad back to 3B? How is this the conclusion you come to from this acquisition?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Shaw on the out and Vlad back to 3B? Huh?
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Are you guys serious? We just got Vogelbach for CASH and nobody is happy? I don't think anyone is unhappy. It's just a weird fit. Him and Tellez have exactly the same skill set. Maybe they see Vogelbach as a slight upgrade on Rowdy and are going to option Tellez?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Did they acquire him to steal food away from Vlad during the post game spread?

They don’t even necessarily have to like Vogelbach more than Tellez to just see this as a 40 man upgrade in some way.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 How is this the conclusion you come to from this acquisition? And your conclusion is?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) 2019 Daniel Vogelbach (March 1-July 31), 399 PA (100 Games): .234/.363/.505, OPS .868 and 132 wRC+ 16.5 BB% to 24.6 K% .364 WOBA, .271 ISO 77 hits, 64 RBI, 25 HR, 14 doubles He had a strong first half last season and made the All Star team, then fizzled out a bit. But we got him for a couple of Swiss Chalet coupons and a bag of used balls. The dude is a good power hitter and OBP machine, he's NOT a free agent until 2025. Edited August 24, 2020 by BlueRocky

Maybe they see Vogelbach as a slight upgrade on Rowdy and are going to option Tellez? Rowdy's league average for his career and league average this year with a .216 Babip this year. I don't understand optioning him and bringing someone who isn't playing that well this year in. The group is pretty tight knit. Optioning Rowdy, while Panik and Drury remain on the team would do nothing for the clubhouse.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Maybe management is tired to see Tellez acting like the welcome wagon at first base.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2020 Author Posted August 24, 2020 In the short term he isn’t even displacing Rowdy. There is room on the bench for Vogelbach, at least until some people come back from injury.

If he could play 2nd or short I would be fine with the move. It doesn't make sense with what we have. You're cherry picking stats and ignoring his overall numbers. His career wRC+ is 98 and he's a first baseman.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I'm fine with this if it means an end of Drury. It is a weird fit. I wonder if they may shop Tellez at the deadline?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 And your conclusion is? Not what you think... it's unilateral for f*** all

If you were to tell me that at the start of the season the Jays got Vogelbach to play 1B, after a season which he hit 111 wRC+ and 1.6 WAR, I'd be ecstatic. His 18 games hasn't been so hot but he's had a BABIP of 0.079. Combined that with him walking 17.2% of time and striking out at 20%, I'll say it is bad luck and the Mariners overreacted.

Maybe they see Vogelbach as a slight upgrade on Rowdy and are going to option Tellez? I wouldn't option Tellez, I would use him as your pinch hitter and occasional matchup 1B/DH. Basically every AB Drury and Panik are getting should be redistributed for Shaw, Tellez, and Vogelbach. The Blue Jays right now are 27TH in the MLB in OBP and 20th in walks. 90% of our dingers are solo shots. This has led to 23rd in runs scored despite being 9th in home runs. We need guys that can get on base and occasionally launch a baseball to the moon. The acquisition makes sense to me and we basically got him for nothing. Edited August 24, 2020 by BlueRocky
Ray Verified Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Its all fun and games until Montoyo plays Vogelbach in the OF and says it’s for “flexibility”. In all seriousness, I’m fine with the acquisition. He has the ability to get on base at a decent clip, and we really need that right now.
