Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 The MLB should implement a rule that any runner who crosses home plate in the 7th inning and onwards is subject to 100 lashes. That should eliminate the bitching and moaning by fans every time their team's BP gives up runs. The bullpen did just fine yesterday. You don't win too many games scoring one run. For as long as I can remember perusing these forums, there has always been complaints about the Jays' BP. But if the team scores late and comes from behind, that's just clutch hitting. I'm way too lazy to look this up, but my gut feel is that the Jays bullpens have been more or less middle of pack, even in the under .500 seasons over the last 10 years. And in the years the bullpen has been bad, it's actually the starting pitchers who haven't been pulling their weight, exposing the relievers.

If the late inning BP guys have an off day, it is easy to nitpick and say 'so and so' would have better there. But having used 4 of their best relievers yesterday with Ryu only lasting 4.2 innings, today was not so easy to manage.

Now the Jays and the manager are essentially immune from criticism. Who needs to look at situations in a vacuum? Sure, leaving Gaviglio in to get beaten around wasn't a good decision but the Jays' BP has probably been ok the last decade and that is relevant now for some reason. Also it's ok to make s***** decisions when the offense only scores one run. There was no.chance of them scoring in extras or something.

I don't know what you think I'm responding to but the last several posts were bemoaning about the Jays' lack of attempt to improve the BP in the offseason. That had nothing to do with criticizing or not criticizing individual game decisions. I bring in the last 10 years because complaining about the BP is a favourite pastime of this board every time the team blows a game late. I grew up watching Ward and Henke as the only thing I knew a bullpen ever was. It's painful to watch otherwise for me as much as anyone else. But if there is already bitching about it in game 2, prepare for a long 60 game season.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 I know we only scored one run, but there were enough base runners and solid contact to keep the game entertaining. In fact they out-hit the Rays 8 to 5 despite the final score. This is a huge improvement over the anemic offense, no walks, and free swingers we’ve been accustomed to in years past. Not too long ago a visit to Tampa meant a really bad weekend and zero offense. We’ve come a long way from that. It was a good game, onto the next one. That said someone else needs to create the GDT for tomorrow, as per board tradition. A kind hearted fellow please volunteer for tomorrow, thanks.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Granted Gaviglio let in 3 runs in 0.2 innings. I think that's a 40 ERA Gaviglio only got one out so it’s an ERA of 81. In such a short season we’re probably going to see some high ERA numbers from relievers after 2 or 3 bad outings when they only have about 20 innings all season! Season stats this year are going to be weird - I wonder how low the MVP’s WAR will be.

It’s one of the few day games for me (I fell asleep in the 8th inning last night!) so I don’t mind doing it, but no problem if anyone else is itching to - it’s been a long wait for baseball!

JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 For us to have a chance to compete we need a competent manager, until then we are doomed. What happened yesterday with Montoyo's stupidity will repeat itself.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 lol... Montoyo loves Gaviglio, been saying this for awhile.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 If we assume Romano, Bass, and Dolis were unavailable, Giles being saved in case we take the lead, and Cole already used, who else was available? Hatch and Kay going tomorrow, so they are out. Is Yamaguchi with the team right now? Other than that it was either Sammy G or Waguespack. Sounds like this was going to be a loss either way. Yamaguchi?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Should have continued with Cole after only throwing 10 pitches. Yeah, him or Yamaguchi.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 For 2020 that's about as optimistic as we should get I did a Spanky last night. Way too much vodka. I like it when I do that because Jays go 58-1 every time. It never fails

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
