Interesting - IMO definitely not for pitchers, you want them working on developing their pitches in games, but for batters why not?

Perhaps for IFAs and 1st round picks your first year is spent with the MLB team then 2nd year you start at AA.

Lol good luck throwing a raw 17 year old whose only in-game experience has come against other kids into the second highest level of the minors after spending a year dicking around with elite grown adults. Can't see that backfiring at all.

It’s a bit confusing, but from my understanding this is how it works:

60-player pool: Only these guys can play for you or traded this season.

40-man roster: Can be added to main roster (like typical year)

30/28/26 man roster: Actual players in the club house

The 3 man taxi squad will come from the pool of 30 players that are not on the 30/28/26 man roster. Like a backup to the actual bench. But they need to be added to 40 man before you can put them in actual games, which works out when somebody on the 30-man gets put into covid list.

So the 30 players not in your club house is your “Buffalo Team” and the taxi squad is the three Buffalo Team members that are on standby. You can kinda treat the entire Buffalo team as your inactive Taxi Squad, as they can be swapped around with no penalty unlike the 40-man roster.

Yeah but the justification for the taxi squad travelling with the team is to quickly be able to add someone to the match day 26+, and to avoid the usual dash to an airport for call ups on away trips. Surely it makes sense to have it at least 5 players on it as unlike a normal injury, the chance of multiple players going down at once is higher. 3 just seems such an arbitary number.

TBF maybe if more than a couple of players on a team go down, the plan would be to delay games a day or two anyway.

Seriously?

lol

Minor league guys making $400 a week, but getting $760 in weekly per diem if they're on the taxi squad? I mean, that doesn't seem off to you? I know it's all union negotiated stuff, but the fact that MLB players get $20K/year (assuming they only get it during the season) that's supposed to cover their daily food (etc) costs, when most of their food is already provided to them, just another little weird bonus. Lots of MILB players could use that extra $20K that the vast majority of MLB players wouldn't even notice was missing...

$108.50 per diem is pretty nuts. You have to be a VERY fancy eater not to have that pile up in a hurry.

You haven't ordered hotel food enough in your life.

Didn't they announce that the taxi squad would be in Buffalo

Ah - nevermind - I'm dumn.

I guess top prospects do play against competition that's older than them, but it seems like in other sports, top prospects are trust into much higher competition way sooner than at the MLB level. Football and basketball players obviously jump right to the pros (+ the very best NHL draft picks).

I guess baseball is just 'different', but I don't necessarily disagree with MLB's notion to reduce the # of minor league teams, weed out the career minor league players. I'd love to see a way to condition and advance the kids to the majors faster.

???

$108.50 x 365 = $39,602.

Guess we know Deadpool's salary expectations. I kinda get it that it's an improvement on regular MiLB salaries, but you just seem like the last guy who would see this as excess.

This situation is kind of like that backup to the backup NHL goalie zamboni driver who beat the Leafs and got paid $500 on the night for it. There is a bump in salary because they always have to be on call. So precedents like that have already been set in other sports.

The closest sport is cricket where the batsman needs a very refined technique and an amateur would normally be badly exposed if thrown straight into top level competition. But then there's no fixed contract and service time nonsense so you do sometimes see the very best prospects skipping the usual pathway - something it'd be great to see more of in baseball.

Really, really hope the next CBA addresses service time in a sensible way.

I'm not complaining that the 3 MiLB players on the taxi squad are getting this (on top of their $400/week), it's just a weird bonus to give to MLB players who are already making at least $563,500 (for a regular season), and get at least one meal per day provided at the ballpark.

Keegan Matheson

@KeeganMatheson

Trent Thornton is the #BlueJays' No. 5 starter right now.

The #BlueJays aren't considering Nate Pearson in a relief role.

You can do the long division.

So this moron couldn't keep on topic because apparently we are facing the bubonic plague. Uh oh, we have Trudeau tagged! Looks like Shaw is getting locked away.

And yeah, you won't be surprised by the other things he tweets about, I'll say that. I hate twitter.

Shaw is free to opt out or earn 1.5M or whatever for two months of inconvenience. Either choice is defensible. Don't choose to play and then whine about the restrictions imposed because you'll be crossing a closed border.

He somehow looks younger than he did 2 years ago. Did he lose weight? He wasn't exactly a body builder before lol.

He came out and apologized. Covid blows, twitter is impulsive. Time to move on. We need the 2018 Shaw at third this year.

So Anderson is out with an Oblique strain which is tricky. It can take awhile. It got me thinking. Who do you have at the back end of the rotation.

Ryu

Roark

Shoemaker

Pearson after a week

We will need 2 starters in the first week. Borucki, Thornton, Kay, Yamaguchi, Merryweather, Zeuch, Murphy.....Who do you guys have filling in?

Thornton for sure, then either Borucki or Kay I would think. Would be interested to see Merryweather, but I don't think he's being considered for the rotation right now...
