I think this is worthy of it's own thread. Looks like an official announcement coming soon.

Loss of 1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2020 and 2021 as well as a $5M fine. Cora's penalty will come after the Red Sox investigation as per Rosenthal.

Losing those draft picks is huge. I hope the Red Sox are similarly punished after investigation. I'm not sure how these suspensions will work in practice or how they might be enforced.

The financial + draft pick component seems appropriate. Those picks are worth a ton of money.

I don't understand how the 1 year suspensions will work in practice. Are they just stepping right back into their old jobs after a year like nothing happened? You'd think that the owners will want to go a different direction.

I also don't understand how tampering in the 14 year old market in Latin America = a lifetime ban but aggressive cheating at the MLB level = a one year break.

Not paid. I think that is the biggest part.

How do you just get to a point as a pro sports team where you decide that you're going to have a huge conspiracy to cheat on a large scale? That's f***ed. And it's so idiotic too, to think that you will be able to keep that under wraps forever. Luhnow probably should have been banned for life.

I'm good with this penalty

No one wants to have to hire an interim manager for a year or lose even a single first round draft pick

They should also be forced to replace their WS banner at their stadium with a giant asterisk.

Or at least a tasty brisket

You know every single team is doing it in some form right?

MLB openly invited this type of ******** when they turned a blind eye to foreign substance cheating all of these years. And guess which team was front and centre on that front before all this! The Astros!

The league needed to legalize a mild form of pitcher grip tack (or whatever) ten years ago and outlaw all others.

Seems light. Id cheat every year if thats the punishment.

If you lost your first and second round draft pick every year? That's a fast way to realllllly hamper your franchise.

It doesn't seem that light to me. Two years of top draft picks lost

What did you want them to do?

I think it's more the one year suspensions that should be a bit longer.

Uhh, maybe a lifetime ban for the manager and gm?

Maybe a fine that'll actually hurt the pockets of owner?

Manfred confirmed they cheated in the post season, so the organization should've gotten a punishment that they'd be feeling for a while.

I see this as more of an on field issue. If anyone got a life ban it should be Hinch.

Actually you're losing two years worth of picks every year in that scenario.

During their year-long suspension, neither A.J. Hinch nor Jeff Luhnow is allowed to attend spring training or attend any major/minor league stadiums affiliated with the Astros. If they do so, they will be put on the permanently ineligible list

Fair. He should be stripped of his ring.

This is likely something the league knew was going on. I mean the MLB has Joe Torre working in their office, he knows what is going on. So they give a serious enough fine with threats of escalation for the next person (again) and teams move on to the next thing the league will turn a blind eye to.

Besides there is a good chance that everyone involved is done anyway. Really only the Astros can bring them back without a complete PR issue
