The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 How can we trade Grichuk ... What team needs some outfield help I'm fine with Grichuk. He'll earn his contract, but provide no surplus value. He's pretty much our new Colby Rasmus.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 (edited) We have one of the worst starting outfield combo (LF+CF+RF) in the AL & NL east combined, aside from maybe the Orioles and Marlins. It's not the right time to ship away Grichuk just yet, the drop-off behind him is immense and you won't get reasonable value for him. TOR: Gurriel, Grichuk, Hernandez NYY: Judge, Hicks, Gardner, Stanton BOS: Benintendi, Verdugo, Bradley jr, Pillar TBR: Meadows, Renfroe, Kiermaier BAL: Santander, Hays, Stewart, Mullins, Dwight Smith Jr NYM: Céspedes, Conforto, Davis, Nimmo, Marisnick WSN: Soto, Eaton, Robles, Taylor ATL: Acuna, Ozuna, Inciarte PHI: Harper, McCutchen, Haseley MIA: Villar, Dickerson, Harold Ramirez, Joyce, Sierra Edited July 22, 2020 by BlueRocky
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 How can we trade Grichuk ... What team needs some outfield help No one is taking Grichuk's contract. Players in the 1-2 WAR range are not a hot commodity in MLB right now, certainly not for the $30+ million he has left on his deal after this season, and definitely not during a pandemic when teams are going to be making far less money. Best hope is to keep him and hope he lives up to whatever upside they thought he had when they signed him in the first place.

If he continues at about 2 WAR per season the contact is fine.

He was well below even that last year though, so it seems unlikely he'll ever significantly exceed the contract's value - underlining Glory's main point that the contract was both unnecessary and has no trade value. Luckily if Grichuk continues to suck, either using him off the bench or simply waiving him once we've got a few decent outfielders, isn't a franchise crippling move.

The fact Puig has been just sitting there for nearly a full calendar year makes this even more egregious, imo.

Seems like a perfect 4th OFer to have on a contending team. He can fill in for injuries and you kinda know what you'll get. Won't cripple a team.

BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 My baseball satellite package blocks out Pitt games. Will jays games now get blocked as well? That level of incompetence would be shocking, even for MLB.

The guy has admitted publicly that he is lazy and doesn't put in maximum effort towards improving his craft. It's no surprise that he hasn't found a taker yet when you combine the past character issues along with the fact that he simply isn't that good anymore.

MLB has been in communication with Pa. Governor's Office. Jays might need another alternative. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN The Blue Jays are looking at alternative options to Pittsburgh, including going to the city of each scheduled opponent and playing as the home team.

It was 1 year, does that mean the other 4 don't count? Steamer projects 0.7 in 47 games which is 2.1 WAR across 141. Right in line with what the Jays are paying for. He doesn't need to "significantly exceed" the contract's value for it to be successful

His career WAR/150 is 2.1, Grichuk is a player who is supposedly in the prime of his career so unless you believe his true talent level changed drastically at age 28 and this is who he is now then the deal is just about market value for the wins he has provided in the past. A 20 point BABIP drop with no other huge discernible changes to his batted ball or plate discipline profile is probably more indicative of what happened to Grichuk last season that made him look so below average.

One theory I saw floated was that Grichuk attempted to trade a bit of power for more contact. According to Statcast his hard hit and barrels percentage in particular took a sharp dropoff for some reason, so whatever he was doing differently really didn't work out for him.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 So according to news reports Jays have 5 options left after Shittsburgh deal falls through. 4 if you count Buffalo

He's basically a 1.5-2 WAR upgrade on Hernandez, who sucks.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 It's quite simple, really. He's basically a 1.5-2 WAR upgrade on Hernandez, who sucks. This is completely incorrect, Teoscar Hernandez matched Puig in WAR last year despite receiving 150 fewer plate appearances.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 This is completely incorrect, Teoscar Hernandez matched Puig in WAR last year despite receiving 150 fewer plate appearances. So there's this thing in baseball where we don't base expectations of future performance on one season.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 So there's this thing in baseball where we don't base expectations of future performance on one season. There's conversely also the thing where we don't assume players going through an obvious decline over several seasons are suddenly going to resume past production. Both players have similar projections at this point, so to suggest that Puig is magically going to outwar Hernandez by 1.5-2 WAR is pretty fantastical thinking.
Ray Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 It's quite simple, really. He's basically a 1.5-2 WAR upgrade on Hernandez, who sucks. No other team in baseball also not touching Puig kind of speaks volumes. The Jays need OF help more than most, sure, but a lot of teams could've had him for dirt cheap and probably upgraded their OF. Maybe he's more of a hassle internally than we think. Personally I won't really care if we do/don't sign Puig. Gurriel and Grichuk are locked into two OF spots, and I don't blame Atkins for giving Fisher/Alford/Teoscar one more chance to see if there's something there.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Unbelievably through all of this not a single player from the Blue Jays has opted out.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Just curious on your thoughts, why is that unbelievable? How could it not be. This an absolute circus act. These players have absolutely no idea where they are going. Where they can have family. People like to plan not be in constant flux. I wouldn’t blame any player for saying f*** this.
