Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 That and they also have a significant amount of crazy yahoos in the southern states and Cali, where they think putting a fabric on their faces equals violation of freedom...we got less of them up here. Any evidence to back that up? Also, last I checked, New York has had around 10x the deaths of Florida with a roughly equal population...and I'd imagine there are a lot more old people in Florida as well. My point is, I tire of this "Canada > US" crap. Andrew Cuomo has an 80% favorability rating after killing all the grandmas in his state. Something tells me these are not the rednecks you're looking for. Also, masks are not a panacea. In fact, they are of minimal help. Any help is good, obviously, but it's not like the difference in caseload can be attributed to whether or not the people wear masks.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 That's my issue with this as well. New York was hit very hard in March/April. Now they are in a pretty good spot, but have no problem letting the Yankees and Mets play home games in NY where players will be coming from different states (including two teams from Florida). New York is also very Dem, so if they are OK with it, then I don't even know what Canada's decision was based on. If science is subjective now, then we got bigger problems as a society. I don't live in Canada, so they can give the Jays franchise to Dave Stewart and move it to Nashville, and I wouldn't care. So if it's in Buffalo, then so be it. Sucks for the players, though. Buffalo would be ideal, but I'm not sure the facilities will meet the minimum standard. Hopefully they can play there. It will be the safest place for them.
Plat Verified Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 Canada is doing “good”. But its not living lol. Lets just continue to do nothing better than everyone else. Maybe boredom will kill us before the Virus does, We can really show the world! Eventually you have to take chances. But its going to be years before we get there at this rate. No perfect time exists to getting back to normal. No matter how you do you will see a ramp up of cases because it’s the nature of the beast. I’m not saying America does it right. Not even f***ing close. But we can’t sit on our hands until a vaccine comes. Like you gotta live your life. The economy is a f***ing Nightmare. People are not working or leaving their house and getting paid for f*** sakes. We're not though, we are just opening things up slowly and strategically, it's not like were on full out lockdown mode. You gotta live your life but that doesn't mean doing whatever the hell you want recklessly, we are still in the middle of the worst pandemic since 1918 and some people either are forgetting that or just fatigued, I don't blame them though...it's been hard for everyone.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 I'm responding to your Karen's comments, not just you ya flippin asshat, my comments were general. Or you can admit you don’t know what a Karen moment means. I wear my mask indoors with zero issues. Been wearing one inside Grocery Stores and public venues before it was mandatory. I have to wear it at work for a good portion of my day as well. Save your dumb insults for someone else.

I mean, I'm sure the players would rather not be in Florida, so if it's either Buffalo or Dunedin, I'm guessing they'll choose Buffalo and live with the bad TV experience.

There's also alot of studies that have come out saying masks are more than just "minimal help". Cuomo looks good because since getting blindsided by the virus NY has turned it around which is the complete opposite of what is happening in Florida (and Arizona/Texas), where they had ample time to prepare but they just chose to ignore it, opened everything up, and now it's a massive shitshow.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 Being Canadian is so embarrassing sometimes. First of all, the triggering over an opinion, and not really a crazy one (though I hate it). Second, the people saying it's an opportunity to explore places to move a Florida team. Time out, how are you going to argue Toronto's market size and then suggest moving a team with a larger market?
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 Lighting seems easy to change? No real expertise on the lighting, but I would think it would be a pretty big project.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 No real expertise on the lighting, but I would think it would be a pretty big project. Maybe it's too late, but couldn't they work out something with another team to "share" a stadium? Like Baltimore or NY?

I do, working you up, serves the same purpose. Your lifestyle's unknown, plus I don't care. You and Boxbike can cheer your swords, has f*** all to do with me.
Plat Verified Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 The 2 aren't comparable. One poses tremendous risk. The second poses almost zero risk. People are at greater risk going to a grocery store. I'm pissed because we just turned away millions in tax revenue. No biggy Trudeau doesn't care about spending money and what's a few more dollars to the deficits that are growing out of control. On the baseball side, our players are now have a substantially higher risk of catching Covid. What happens if we actually do get off to a hot start and we miss the playoffs by a game or two and we had 3 of our best players miss the last 2 weeks because they caught Covid? The odds of a player dying because of Covid are next to nil. The odds of a team missing the playoffs because of Covid are actually quite high! Maybe having a non-bubble baseball season during a middle of a pandemic isn't such a good idea.

New York turned it around because all their vulnerable people died.... Florida is also performing more tests than anyone else. The death rate has not substantially risen. The healthcare system is not being overwhelmed. Things can change, of course, but it doesn't really seem like the disaster everyone says it is.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 I think you're talking about the shitshow going on to the south of us, Canada seems to be doing good and that's because we have been following strict protocols and now's not the time to let up. That's why it's relatively safe to bring in the team even if there is a very small chance they will bring in an existing case. Since people are following strict protocols it will prevent existing cases from transmitting. People in Canada are smart, so they aren't crowding the bars, so hypothetically if a baseball player came in with a case (undetected), broke the local quarantine and went out on the town, he won't find a crowded a bar to give it to 20 people anyway.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 Lighting seems easy to change? In 10 days? I'm not in that field, but I'd think it would take longer than that, and would be pretty expensive just to (hopefully) play 30 games in an empty stadium.

Yeah, I think Spanky is oversimplifying if he thinks it's as easy as changing a few bulbs. From what I can recall, the camera angles in Buffalo suck as well.

I was implying bulbs, they can be a fortune at that level. Redoing lighting would take a very long time. I feel they're up to par.

New York turned it around because they locked it down. Yes, Florida should be performing all those tests because they are an epicenter of an outbreak, they have a high positivity rate and I straight up don't trust their death numbers.

Why even take that chance though? even if it is a very small chance of the virus spreading, why take the chance? there's no fans allowed in anyway.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 It spreads more easily. I abide by my local bylaws. I wear a mask indoors. I don't want to contract the virus. If I am asked to wear a face covering when I go shopping, it is a small thing to ask. It is not the flu, thank you for demonstrating your lack of critical thinking once again. Your brain has a set of narratives locked away that can be used to dismiss any contradictory opinion, this is fairly common for people who let other people think for them. This is how pitchfork mobs worked back in the day. If the aldorman says this woman is a witch, by golly he must be correct. I bring up comparisons to the flu in terms of death rates ONLY and like a jukebox, your brain cues up "O ur 1 uv thos its da flu gais lol". It's a pre programmed response that someone has drilled in your mind. A very reasonable post you've made on this. Excellent work.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 They should station in Buffalo but just honestly host home games in the opponents stadium at this point. No fans in the ballpark. Who gives a s*** at this point. Seems like a way better solution. Atleast our team can play in a major league facility.

MisterSG1 Verified Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 I'm sort of flabbergasted that they denied the plan despite the ability to CONFINE players to the old SkyDome hotel. One of my major concerns with this, is what precedent does this set up for the other leagues, is this the end of sports leagues existing in Canada as well? Because obviously, when the MLS is done with their little world cup, TFC, Impact, and Whitecaps will be in the same boat. When I heard the decision, I just had a bad feeling that the Blue Jays will probably never play a game in Toronto again.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2020 Posted July 18, 2020 You ever play competitive sports, Jonn? What the f*** does this have to do with anything Spanky lol.
