Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 That would be very interesting if true.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Damn that’s pretty crazy to hear
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Seems unlikely, but maybe they think we are closer to competing than most believe
wk680 Verified Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 (edited) Seems unlikely, but maybe they think we are closer to competing than most believe But consider if this is 300 million over 8 or more years (for a 29 year old), you have to figure they would expect to be in position to be a contender at least by a few years into this (2022) when he is still in his prime. And he would also be a game-changer for jump-starting the Jays' into being legit contenders (including making the team more attractive to other free agents). When I first read this, the pessimist in me thought "yeah probably they offered the equivalent of 300 million CAD (about 230 million USD at the current exchange rate)". But consider what the Jays did with Ryu (very happy to see them do business with Boras for once - even though I still hate the bastard), I guess it could be for real. It may be a good sign that Rogers actually wants to win a championship after all. Maybe they saw what winning did for the Raptors and want some of that for themselves (of course they already almost got there in 2015-16). Edited December 25, 2019 by wk680

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 I may be alone in this, but I don't give a f***. He didn't sign. We moved on. Next. While I think reports like this need to be taken with a massive grain of salt, if true it's kind of a big deal as it signals the ability and desire for the front office to shop in the premium aisle at the free agency supermarket. It's been a lot of years since the Jays were interested or able to try to bring in the truly top of the market players such as Cole. For all of the s*** the front office takes for touting the payroll flexibility they have worked towards achieving, the core of pre-arb players they have built is so damn cheap it allows them to take on massive salaries under the available payroll budget. I dream that the Jays may be serious suitors for Mookie Betts next offseason, an in his prime MVP caliber outfielder is exactly what this team needs given the s***** MLB outfield and lack of good outfield prospects in the sytem.

I think you should care....not in that we didn't get Cole, but in what playing with the big boys could mean. "If" this is true, then what many of us have been waiting for (Rogers flexing its wallet) could finally be happening, and it's a big step.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 Sign Betts next year instead. Outfield is a bigger organizational weakness than pitching at this point.

Tropes aside, Rya signed the big deal. I love the deal. It shows all the above, but actually shows all of the above.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 I respect that we were involved but it seems like it was either The Yankees or Southern California.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 There was an earlier rumour that they offered on Strasburg too.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 25, 2019 Posted December 25, 2019 I think that with what the FO has accomplished this year, the rest of the MLB industry is going to take the Jays seriously. It will bode well for the team.

They've been spending on the Raps and Leafs (combined with Bell). You have to think it's been paying off for them. They probably realize it's important to their future to have this kind of in-demand content, especially with more and more people moving to digital subscriptions for things.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 There was an earlier rumour that they offered on Strasburg too. I think I would have been seriously torn if the Jays managed to land Strasburg for the type of contract he signed for. The pure fan in me would have been giddy like a school girl at a Bieber concert, but the more analytical portion of my psyche would have been cowering in the corner at the amount of pure risk in this contract. At least with Ryu the Jays are getting ace-like ability at a discount, $20 million for what he can possibly provide is pretty damn reasonable. But Strasburg at $35 million a season until he is 37 is super unlikely to age well, the guy has only averaged like 157 innings per season over the last 5 years.

Ok, boomer is a really lazy and brainless reply. Make an argument.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Obv if true the FO has some money available to spend. Ozuna or Castellanos?

wk680 Verified Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Obv if true the FO has some money available to spend. Ozuna or Castellanos? I would not pursue either of these. The Jays need a solid CF'er who can hit. Castellanos is a defensive liability, and Ozuna is mediocre, at best, in CF; so best profiles as a corner OFer. But the Jays already have Gurriel and Grichuck projected to take the bulk of the innnings in the corners. May as well use the money to fortify the bullpen.

It's weird that Spanky99 and Krylian (look even a few posts above) can call me stupid almost literally on every post I make and not get banned, but I call one of them boomer instead of using such insults and I get banned (albeit for ~ 4 hours). Nice. Well, I guess you make the rules.
