It's just been an all around weird year for sports. Blues, Nationals, hell even us poor Toronto folk get thrown a bone with the Raptors. Stupid Tom Brady ruined it though.

How many WC teams have made it to the WS or won so far, theirs parity in the top clubs getting in, anyone can win a short series in a baseball sample?

What do you guys think of Soto's shimmy thing. Fans (#letthekidsplay) or not?

Warren from third.

Parkman doing his little shimmy.

It drives the women here in Cleveland crazy.

Vargas, the little left-hander, set at the belt.

Here's the pitch.

I like that they won as the oldest team in baseball. They went out in the offseason and brought in old guys making a few million instead of giving the spots to league min rookies: Kendrick, Suzuki, Dozier, Sanchez, Asdrubal in July, and obviously they paid big money for Corbin too. They don't win the World Series (or even make the playoffs) if they do what most other teams did and refuse to pay money for veterans that that have a higher floor than a league min AAA guy. Maybe free agency will be a bit more interesting this year.

If things continue as they have, we might see more teams win with a high average age, as the teams that pounce on cheap veterans end up picking up significant wins on the back half of their roster.

I don't think this is going to change anything - the Nats built a very expensive and fragile roster and it worked out but it was so f***ing lucky. They won the lottery when it comes to avoiding significant injuries to good players. They had essentially no good players suffer a significant injury this year, unless I am forgetting something. Rendon, Soto, Robles, and even Adam f***ing Eaton all got 617+ PA. Trea Turner broke a finger and missed a couple of weeks. Their top 4 pitchers all made 27+ starts and Strasburg/Corbin had clean seasons.

We've seen teams built like this in the past - expensive, old, good, and thin - and it very rarely works out. One quad strain for Rendon plus some elbow inflammation for Corbin and they might not even make the playoffs.

This is not a template and it should not / will not alter any trends.

agree but it will continue a media/old fan (like BTS) narrative that you can't win without Vetrin Presents

I don’t necessarily think you need vetrin presents to win, I just think veterans have become a reasonable way to add talent.

I do think njh is right and it’s wishful thinking on my end that aspects of Washington’s win would be instructive for other teams. I respect the Nats for being willing to throw money at roster holes, and don’t enjoy the current free agent climate. I just like that they had success and a team like Cleveland that had a disgraceful offseason wasted a year of their rapidly-closing window. They could have punted the season like a lot of other teams, because their roster had real holes, but they actually tried to be good and it paid off.

That is spot-on and I couldn't agree more. Would only add that they also got very lucky with Asdrubal Cabrera.

And there's nothing wrong with luck, by the way. That's why they play the games. Part of what makes sports so great is the balance between long-term planning with analytics and just sheer luck. We need the superstars and the dynasties. We need the "analytics revolutions" so we can make cool charts and sound smart. But we also need the miracles and the outcomes that defy all logic (zero wins by the home team?!). We need the 2019 Washington Nationals/Expos.

I just think it's because all Rizzo knows. He fills holes and then for the past 5 years he had no depth when injuries happen. He (or someone in his org) drafts quite well but he's never had a 40 man roster. This year the injuries didn't happen and it led to a championship. It gets him 3 more years at least...and he will likely spend to keep the team relevant.

I don't think Howie Kendrick is talked about enough. He put up an offensive career year (and it's not even close) at the age of 36. Almost exactly a third of his PA's against LHP and not having to play everyday obviously kept him fresh. If Vets are coming in cheap, finding the correct ways to allow them to thrive or at least provide their greatest value is what I think smart teams will do. Of course finding the 36 year old that is going to lower his K-rate by 25%, while raising the BB rate is probably never easy to find.

I think the Twins are a better example of what BTS is going for with signing vetrins. They got Cruz, Schoop, Perez, Marwin, etc, for reasonable prices in free agency. It's a good way to add depth. Most of the WAR will have to come from the young internal pieces though. Free agency is just the inexpensive depth option now, and maybe you get lucky with one FA overachieving.

He didn't mention Puerto Rico? They are part of the legacy too. And I think Tony Armas Jr. should also be proud. Did they talk to Bartolo Colon? All big factors in this WS win.

EXPOS/NATS WS CHAMPS!!!!

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/why-gerrit-cole-never-came-into-game-7-of-the-world-series/

I've been harping on this for awhile, but apparently Cole and Hinch 'agreed' on 2 conditions. Cole only enters during a fresh inning and if they are leading. If you read the comments, people question who came up with these rules.

I can't imagine a Manager would be the one trying to restrict when/where he's used - unless you're concerned that he's going to try and force his way into a game or get too worked up in the pen or something. We'll probably never really know, but I think there's a decent possibility that Cole dictated when and where he was going to pitch instead of simply saying - "I'll pitch whenever and wherever you want me to coach"

WASHINGTON—Describing the French Canadian municipality as a “world-class city,” Nationals players admitted Thursday that their World Series win would be way sweeter if the franchise stilled played in Montréal. “We’ve never really considered D.C. our home, and we all grew up bleeding Expos blue,” said World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg, speaking in French while lovingly referencing Montréal’s architecture, cosmopolitan culture, and its “incredible cuisine.” “The first thing we did when we got back to the locker room was sing Québec’s anthem. Man, could you imagine driving our parade floats down Catherine Street? It’s great to finally get a ring, but it’ll be a little bittersweet to celebrate with a bunch of D.C. bureaucrats who are just looking for something to do.” At press time, Strasburg admitted to taking some solace in winning a World Series without Bryce Harper.
