No doubt the body composition has to have improved, but the guy should put more effort into dropping some unnecessary weight than seems to have happened up to this point. With his history of knee trouble already continuing to carry around 250+ pounds on his shorter frame really can't be good for his long term well being, regardless of how he's put together. Reports say he didn't change his diet at all, still the same rice and beans diet as before with an increase in strength and conditioning work. The physical work was a good start, but even a few months on a weight loss specific diet would likely do wonders for him.

Yeah, he has access to our strength and conditioning team this offseason, so he likely turned a lot of upper body fat into muscle, but is core and glutes seem to be unchanged, which by looks seems to be where he stores all his fat. I think the only thing that will trim those areas is a diet change, and I doubt he'll want to do that.

He looks just as fat as last year which is disappointing but as long as he plays well I guess I don’t care that much. Him continuing to play overweight is just going to move him off Third faster. Not sure if he cares about that though. I assume Travis Shaw is going to be playing 3B a couple times a week anyway.

Towards the end of last season he said he wants to stay at 3rd and admitted he got tired by the end of the season. He knows being in better shape helps with both of those things.

Whether he's decided that he's only going to work out more and not change his diet could be either because he's still just a kid (i.e. naive and won't listen to other's advice) or because he loves food too much doesn't really make a difference, it's still disappointing. If his bat takes off this year no one will care, but if he repeats last year, he's going to get slaughtered by the press and fans for wasting his talent.

“His areas of development are clear and visible, not just to him but to everyone and he’s worked hard at addressing them,” Shapiro said. “He has a ways to go still. He knows that and we know that but the biggest thing I see is the desire to address those things, a desire to get better. Still has elite skill.”

Translation. 'He's still too fat.'

There really is no excuse for him to be so fat still.

He likes food too much and doesn't think he's needs to be in his shape to hit the ball hard. That's the excuse.

Kinda true, but he can't stay at 3B. He'll no doubt eat himself to 1B/DH.

Does he look like he's 20 pounds lighter? That would make him...230.

I'm quoting weight loss into muscle weight gain? What do you mean 230, is that draft weight?

He was listed at 250 last season

Have to imagine the suspension of the season is going to have a huge impact on vlads weight when things get going again. Anyone have any idea where he is right now or if he still has Blue Jays trainers with him? Hope he's not isolating with abuela.

That's a good point. Hopefully someone is with him helping him to keep trending down and getting trim. Probably needs to lose another 20-30lbs before the Jays brass are satisfied.

I was thinking about this a few days ago. The world is against Vladdy getting in shape.

All the Dominican players appear to be back home. So he's getting a healthy helping of Grandma's cooking.

Vlad staying home all day. Nothing could go wrong there.

I like how Vlad and his Grandma have the same body shape. Slight edge to Vlad in the titty department and slight edge to Grandma in the biceps.

If she does all the cooking, does Vlad do the dishes at least?

Man - I saw a highlight of Vlady hitting the game winning HR in the bottom of the 9th in Montreal (was that last spring or 2 springs ago?). He looked significantly smaller then.
