Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Didn't Atkins take a lot of s*** from fans for not holding out for more in a trade? It sounds like they held out for more on Galvis and in return, got nothing. If you want your GM to be an Alpha GM who's going to squeeze every ounce of value out of trades - then this type of thing is going to happen from time to time. You need to show other GM's that you're not a push over who will just take anything that's offered simply to get the deal done. The Sportsnet article seems to indicate that we had trade offers for Galvis and refused them because we weren't confident that Bichette could play shortstop. You have to figure that the offers were somewhere in the range of what we got for Daniel Hudson. Not amazing, but certainly worth taking. It just feels like they were unsure of what they had and didn't have a plan.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Cool... I'd extend Smoaky, you'd get him here for peanuts, he knows the market for 1B... found an article on him saying as much and a lot more juicy quotes... https://torontosun.com/sports/baseball/toronto-blue-jays/jays-veteran-smoak-bullish-on-teams-future-and-wants-to-be-part-of-it

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 A .726 OPS and a wRC+ of 96 with a BABIP of .211 in the second half isn't want I'd call atrocious, particularly when you're talking a sample size of 26 games. I would much rather have Smoak as our 1B next year over Tellez, I have little faith in Tellez as a long term piece. Depends what you mean as long term, Smoak turns 33 this year and has already peaked.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Depends what you mean as long term, Smoak turns 33 this year and has already peaked. He's talking about Tellez, he has options and could be Smoak's depth in case of injury, Smoak on a year deal is no big deal.

Agreed, and I'm not saying roll with him for the next 10 years. I don't think we have a suitable replacement for Smoak at this point, and would keep him until we do. I understand that some would roll the dice with Tellez, or that they genuinely feel he's a better bet at 1B going forward, but I'm not one of those people.

I'd have to think the amount of uncertainty surrounding Bo's ability to play SS was really low, which tells us the offers for Galvis must have been incredibly s***** (so s***** they weren't willing to risk trading Galvis).
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I don’t know why the Blue Jays would want that. He can only play 1B/DH. If the Blue Jays are going to run a full season with a short bench you need versatile players that can play multiple positions. Galvis covered the infield and cold also play in LF in an emergency situation. Hell I believe he’s started a game at CF in his career as well. I would rather they look to upgrade 1B. With a better player peroid or someone young that can project at the position for the foreseeable future. Smoak has been atrocious in the second half. Last night was the first time he did anything productive in nearly a month. Would like to move on from him sooner rather than later. Give those AB’s to Tellez. Because you need some veteran presence on a team every winning team has some veteran presence on their team in baseball, football, hockey etc. Smoak is inexpensive he still productive a switch hitter and he's still the leader in BB and OBP on this team nobody get on base more often than Smoak on the team. Bichette will be a leader in OBP in what we've seen in a small sample. The upgrade at 1st base with a younger player could very well be Vlad Guerrero Jr time will tell maybe as soon as of next season. Tellez reminds me of Pedro Alvarez big power lot of strikeouts with limited defensive capabilities. We could see a future infield of Drury at 3rd Bichette at SS Biggio at 2nd and Guerrero at 1st base. Tellez might be a piece that the Blue Jays are willing to part with down the road for some missing pieces.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I can't wait to see what type of return we get for Tellez when we move him for missing pieces...

The idea of veteran presence is ********, and I'm 100% positive Tellez gets moved if some buyer comes calling with a half reasonable offer. Chances are low Smoak is a Blue Jay in 2020. He might get signed to a minor league deal ffs.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I wouldn’t mind bringing Smoak back on a minor league contract but we can do that regardless if he’s released now or not. The reason you release him now is to give him the chance to sign with a playoff bound team and free up bats for young players. I would also like to think we can do better than Smoak next year. The free agent market is always flush with 1B/DH types that don’t get multi year contracts. Would like to just bring in someone like Moose who could play 3B a few times a week while Vladdy DH’s and just play 1B and even 2B in a pinch.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 When this team isn't rostering 14 pitchers it has plenty of room for Smoak. Need someone who can take a walk. He is a perfectly adequate player for next year until the team determines the construction of the infield.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 As far as Atkins is concerned it is obvious his shrinking pool of supporters will defend to their deathbeds his moves. Galvis being a minor move or not, it's showing a consistent pattern of Atkins getting outplayed by the league. He moves fast, he gets outplayed like with the Stroman trade. He stands pat, he gets outplayed like with Galvis or against KC with Luciano. The only defense that is somewhat plausible is that the FO has a 100% rock solid plan and they purposely don't care about maximizing asset values in trades or proper roster management in a season that they didn't have to, but chose to, throw away.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Depends what you mean as long term, Smoak turns 33 this year and has already peaked. Has he? Smoak is posting career bests in a lot of categories. If he were at a normal BABIP then he would be having one of his finest seasons.
